GH4 GH4 V-log?

If the latest 43 rumors update is true, I'm relieved. I have no problem paying $100 or so for V-LOG L, the GH4 wasn't advertised to have a LOG mode *when I bought it*. However, they have unfairly been *showcasing* GH4 cameras with V-LOG L since November, and to suddenly go, "Oops, those are GH4Rs...", would be the ultimate troll from Panasonic. They've committed to it coming to us in some form or another with all these demos and beta tests being made so incredibly public. Paying a few bucks for it is reasonable, as it IS a significant upgrade (2 additional stops).

And if it is like slog2, that will be 2 additional stops on the highlight end of the curve.

Just keep in mind that V-LOG L apparently is the same curve as the Varicam 35's 16-step curve, only it's missing those extra 4 steps, so V-LOG L maps GH4's 12th stop clip at 79 IRE. (If I'm understanding this correctly.) So V-LOG L users will have to adjust to that - the histogram will never show clipping (as we normally see it).

No idea. I'm planning on setting the GH4's zebra to around 50% (lowest setting) to start with, as that's a little bit above where middle gray should be (I think?). Once I get familiar with that new middle gray area, I'll probably go back to not using a zebra (I can normally eyeball it once I get a feel for how a camera handles exposure).

And the place toward the left end of the histogram where you might have been concerned with noise before will be a point further to the left with log, assuming they fix the 79 ire problem with the PRERELEASE firmware of the dvx200. We don't even know if it is a problem with the gh4 firmware.

I haven't used VLOG-L on a GH4 so cannot say how it's been implemented. On the DVX200, VLOG-L sits middle gray at 42 IRE, and 90% white at around 61 IRE. Nothing will exceed 79 IRE, so --you have to know how it works to expose properly.

On the GH4, maybe they have adjusted the histogram and/or zebras to accomodate VLOG-L's different exposure levels? I don't know, but it's possible that, for example, they've remapped the histogram to know that absolute clip is at 79 IRE instead of 109 IRE, and rescaled it to show that.

That would be awesome if true. Hopefully they update that for the DVX200 before release as well...

I just hope it's in stock sooner rather then later...A boxed, deliverable product doesn't sound like it will be out soon, and even then it'll probably be on backorder for the first few weeks.

Don't mind spending upwards of $200 for the upgrade, but I seriously hope it's not a boxed physical product that needs to be double shipped to reach our doorsteps.. Only time will tell..

Supposedly, it's $99 and there is indeed a box ...

Umm, the box rumors suck, because everything gets here so late then. With online download you can get it as right as its available.
Hope that the rumors are not true, because a physical box for an update these days is retarded imo.
