GH4 GH4 V-log?

It won't be long before camera manufactures adopt a monthly subscription model just like Adobe. Need V-Log, waveform, anamorphic de-squeeze, Re-authorize your dongle online and you are good for a month, or daily rental.
I'll hear they will charge your credit card whenever you take the lens cap off.

Given the tough competition that the GH4 has now with the Samsung NX1 (H.265 codec), Sony RX10II with slog2, Sony RX100IV with slog2, Canon XC10 with c-log, I think it is a small calculation exercise for the product manager of Panasonic how they are better off:
A) charge a small fee for the v-log update (what is more an upgrade then an update)
B) give it away for free and prolong the lifecycle of the old GH4, selling more units
C) do nothing

Development costs will be given to some extend, but since other cameras has build in log curves and since the sales of the GH4 has exceeded by far expectations every now in additio sold unit will deliver an incremental profit increase (according to the contribution margin). So I think that B) would be best in terms of economic profit, but that is up to them.

I have purchased also a Shogun to benefit from the 10bit 422 advantage of an external recorder. Since the Shogun has now v-log too, I would like to see that for my GH4 too - to giv me the best possible footage. Since I know that they can do so I wonder if will stay with Panasonic if they will decide to make that not available to us. For sure I will not purchase a DVX200 in such a scenario - that is my point of view.

...If it makes you want to switch to Sony or Samsung, then that's your choice.

And I think that is the hiccup in the argument. When Vlog is released, the GH4 will have been out about a year and a half, and has sold about a gazillion units. Will it make financial sense for those gazillion owners to sell of their gear and switch to Samsung or Sony rather than pay $50, $100, or $150 for the Vlog upgrade to an already great camera, especially knowing that, realistically, it will probably be included with the GH5?

It may push some new purchases towards Samsung and Sony. They may also release an "A" model GH4 like the broadcast division tends to do with their cameras when they come up with feature upgrades (like the AF100a and AC160a). But I have a hard time seeing many GH4 owners ditching their cameras over this.

They purported to be selling about 5,000 units monthly, forcing them to open a new manufacturing line just for GH4 in the summer of 2014. And 5,000/mo is a huge number for a $1,700 Panasonic camera (not so huge for Canon and Nikon, however).

What I know about vlog in the GH4... not much but:

1/ Its coming.
2/ Its called v log lite.

I recently had the engineering version of the DVX200 in my hands and whilst the product is not yet completed, so I can't share images from it (little hands on review coming), the v-log lite implemented in that camera works well. I wouldnt expect miracles, however it did add a lot to the shooting and grading experience of that camera - therefor would expect the same with the GH4. (This is all my own opinion).

I completely agree. I think that most of us who specifically want the V-log upgrade won't mind paying a reasonable fee for it, even if this costs an additional $200.
Dude! Dont give them any ideas.

Mr. Panasonic My friend TheDingo meant to type $50. Oh those pesky typos!

They're lowering the price on the model anyway, so by the time the upgrade comes out, there'll be even more competing products on the store shelves. Their options is to raise prices back up and give it away for free to the new users at ~ $1,700; keep the $1,500 price tag and charge something for a V-log or keep the status quo with the free update. They're unlikely to charge $1,700 plus extra for the V-log to the new users. It will be a year and half old camera by October, so they might as well up its worth until GH5 is ready.

It's alleged to be Sony IMX269 sensor but it does have IBIS .... except not in 4K.

You're saying IBIS works in 1080 video mode on the GX8?

Speak for yourself! ... not "most of us"! I won't pay $200 for it and I want it really badly!

According to the Imaging Resource, it does in 1080p and lower resolutions.

Hmm. Interesting but it's not using the floating sensor it does in stills mode - it's just an electronic stabilisation applied to the image surface. Which is very different and I suspect not great for image quality (and perhaps not much better than applying stabilisation in post). As IR say, the GH4 is still the video flagship by a margin.

Have they foreseen a rec709 preview when one swithes the DVX200 to v-log-l?

It is all relative. If the AF-100 had a smokin' hot image that everybody loved then $200 to prolong the future of your camera is a no brainer. If the image is just "fine" and there are better options around the corner (soon to be GH5) then the odds go down of mass participation for pay.

Obviously not enough. A $200 upgrade is pretty small change when you factor in what a typical shooting kit costs.

I think the only $200 item that I use on a regular basis is a used Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AI-S, everything else costs a heck of a lot more.
