GH4 GH4 V-log?

Anyway the biggest question is...Is it too little too late maybe?

Jordan Drake who shoots the Camera Store TV reviews on YouTube prefers the look of his GH4 V-log over his Sony A7S S-log2, and from the few V-log samples I've seen so far I can kind of understand why. I suspect that I'll be shooting with my GH4 permanently set to V-log once I've got my head around how to properly handle V-log in post.

Yeah its good that we know it comes in octobre. Sucks it has to bee that long, as 80% of my projects are in summer. Considering picking up a A7S in the meanwhile.

I really think Panasonic have dropped the ball with this one. All the interest created over the last few months will have completely dissipated by October. I'll be glad to have it, but I'll also be looking at new cameras by then I imagine.

On a slight tangent - I'm convinced the headline feature of the GH5 will be IBIS. The GX8 is clearly marketed as their professional stills camera, and I'd guess that's why they didn't implement IBIS in video mode - because it would draw filmmakers away from their pro video GH line. Plus they must be feeling huge pressure to keep up with Sony in that department. IBIS would be so awesome in a GH camera. So perfect. Small form factor and no rig necessary? Yes please! Looks like the GX8 is a decent low light performer too, so there's that to hope for. Now we just need them to come up with some kind of dual-pixel equivalent!

If the GH5 doesn't have IBIS - I'm off. Sony and Olympus have moved the goal posts.

I'm filming underwater, so don't have the luxury of a gimbal or those type of devices, yes the water helps dampen footage - but unless you have a large rig with a big displacement, having some sort of OIS/IBIS makes a massive difference.

As to October - it will be here soon!

Is dynamic range much of an issue for underwater filming? I'd have imagined it wasn't - but then I don't know s**t about it! :)

IBIS in 4K takes a lot of processing power. To me, the big step would be the BSI - superior low light performance and the related dynamic range improvement. A higher bit rate recording would also be a plus (then again, GH4 has 1080p in 200 Mbps while 4K is at 100, making the camera missing an attainable feature).

Other than the current Sony mirrorless cameras, I don't expect to see any new GH4 challengers by this October. Canon and Nikon are out of the game compared to the GH4, so who's left ?

To date the main reason for the lack of IBIS in a GH4 type of camera was heat dissipation, as the GH4 uses a substantial heat-sink so you have no shooting time limit.

I don't know how keen I would be on a GH5 if that unlimited shooting time were to disappear.

...What I expect in a GH5 is a better sensor/dynamic range, no 4K crop, and higher frame rates. ( like 4K DCI 30p / 60p )

Ok not the same price range. But the ursa mini is going to be awesome. And I also like the canon 1DC, if I could find it cheap from somebody who would sell it at a good price I would definitely consider it.

What I want in GH5: less crop, more dynamic range, v-log, better low light power, and if possible RAW. But such a update would probably take panasonic 2 years to release.

In a way, I really don't see the connection between V-log and other cameras. Maybe they are concerned GH4 owners will not upgrade if they have such an improvement. Which is a large upgrade a year and a half from camera release. But you will have the opportunity to sell more GH4s if you release it now. Either way if it goes on the GH4 then it will add competition to the GH5. A guess would be that the GH5 will be announced around the October time period.

IBIS, 120p with audio, 60p 4k and no FOV crop would be the list for me. Improving low light is kind of a given. I see the NX1 as being the main competition to the GH4/5. I don't own a GH4 but was considering. Now I will definitely wait for a GH5 model.

My gut is telling me it's not going to be free and Panasonic is working out the upgrade procedure. I hope I'm wrong but it's really taking to long and the DVX200 is also coming out in October. Beta testers have been shooting with it for several weeks now getting everybody all juiced on having it. At NAB the rep. told me they are planning to offer it as a paid upgrade but pricing wasn't set.

Both the GH4 and AF-100 have price drops

AF-100A got a $2K price drop now $1999
GH4 also got a $200 Price drop. Now $1497

Things are happening.

I won't pay for V-Log, it should've been there from the start. If I had to pay, I would just get an RX10 II with Slog2 on it. Or pay up for an A7RII.

If GH5 could do 200 Mbps in HEVC 10-bit internal, it'd be nearly equivalent to a ProRes 444. Not much need for Raw there.

The rest is reading tea leaves but ... let's say, a 22 MPX BSI sensor, DR a couple of stops over GH4, V-Log, HEVC @ 150-200 Mbps, oversampled 4K from ~ 15 MPX a la Sony A7RII. With these specs, it should sell well, even if introduced by the spring, 2016.

A couple of cinema quality zooms would be nice too, especially if the one from DVX200 can be modded.

Wish they hadn't done that. If the DVX200 is all it's cracked up to be, I'm going to sell my AF100 to help cover the cost. New AF100a's for $2k aren't going to help the resale value.

And to get back to some other posters' previous comments, I don't see the logic of delaying the Vlog-l release to protect the DVX200. I have a GH4, and would be getting a DVX200 regardless of when the GH4 gets Vlog. I'm not sure what the sense would be dropping in $4,200--$5,000 just to get Vlog would be if you can just wait a month or two to get it as an upgrade to a $1,700 (now $1,500) camera which you may or may not already own. You're buying the DVX200 for the integrated zoom lens and proper video camera inputs and controls. Apples and oranges.

[EDIT] Let me clarify... I don't see the logic in what some folks are hypothosizing-- that the Vlog-l release was delayed to protect the DVX200. I don't think that's what Panasonic is doing.

ok... so now that there is kind of announcement that there will be vlog in Oct everyone is not happy with other things about the gh4?

I'd gladly pay up if it means better DR.

The camera is dirt cheap compared to other cameras.

Vlog (which Vlog-l was derived from) hadn't even been developed yet when the GH4 was released over a year ago. I mean, the GH4 was released 6 months before the Varicam 35 and HS, which Vlog was originally developed for. And the GH4 is from the consumer division, the Varicam the broadcast division... which are, practically speaking, two different companies who don't always communicate with each other. Delaying a $1,700 camera for a year and a half just for a log setting that most users probably won't use makes no sense, not for the market it's aimed at.
