GH4 GH4 V-log?

And this one is graded!

Looks very promising. The grade is a bit "polite" (understandable re the content) and a little uneven in places, but overall V-Log L seems to get the job done. Very much looking forward to the release.

(BTW, although I'll never own one, I do like the Q.)

Not massively impressed with those Veydra primes personally. Not for the GH4 anyway. They still have that MFT glass look to me - too sharp and clinical - not enough character (anamorphic doesn't automatically mean character I guess).

Hmmm... The Veydra primes achieve sharpness through optical performance, as there is no electronic correction done by the camera.

Myself, I prefer a lens that is optically sharp without any electronic enhancement, which is why I prefer to shoot with Nikon AI-S primes and Voightlander high-speed primes. I haven't had a chance to try the Veydra lenses, but I suspect I might like them.

This is what I'd have assumed about the Veydras but it's not what I'm seeing here. I trust my eyes above theory. They're not as fast as the Voghtlanders - which mainly show character wide open - and definitely not as "characterful" as Nikon AI glass (which I too use a lot).

Having said all that it's amazing what a Tiffen Ultra Contrast filter can do for Lumix lenses:

GX7 + 20mm 1.7 + Tiffen UC5:

GM1 + Voight 25mm 0.95 + UC3

I was hoping to see less of the nasty highlight problems you see in the background here

Yeah, not nice. My feeling is that it's a question of incorrect exposure and since they have a fast turn around, I'll give them a pass. The question this raises is will zebras catch this blow out with the log style display on the camera monitor?

Me: Does V-log actually increase dynamic range on the GH4 video mode?

Jordan Drake: Yes

Me: Does it also have a colour-science tweak or just gamma?

JD: Yes. The colours are different seen in much better skin tones, something I always went on about with the GH4 is the skin and this fixes it

---------

It's coming, can't wait to extract more DR and get better colours off the GH4!

Hopefully. c-log on the C100 had quite a nice highlight roll-off and V-log is reported to improve this also.

Ebrahim! Nice to see you around! What camera are you using at the moment?

Matt Smith, I've looking around for you! Sorry guys to turn this into personal chat but I am very glad to hear from you again and see Lintel Films doing work. Congratulations for the start, I still believe you'll go very high. I am a regular DVX & EOSHD contributer and also available at Ebrahimsaadawi@gmail.com

-I am now using a GH4 for nature, landscape, real estate, drone work, for anything where extreme resolution will impress the client, and I am using Nikon DSLRs for everything else, the D810 got me hooked, can't find a better image for shooting narrative/music video stuff. So lively, so organic and so filmic.

The V-Log update plus the new Metabones XL which makes the GH4 a 1.5x crop may sway me to use it for everything, that would be liberating. It's still not cheap and if I were to sell the D810 and the GH4 and save the 700$ off the metabones, one could just invest in a workehorse like a C100 mkI (Which performs perfectly for both landscape and narrative work) or a similar do it all package instead for tinkering. So it requires a bit of thinking. What are you primiarily using in Lintel Films now?

Onto V LOG: About the the frame grab with a minor clipped speck, every camera clips, this is shot under the shade where he was exposing for Chris skin with complete sunlight in the background, any camera would clip these two white building surfaces reflecting direct sunlight. They're actually too small and too little clipping for the GH4 Dynamic range I know. They look like normal clipping, nothing bad and nothing alexa-like, which is expected. I don't expect any changes in the highlight roll-off behaviour, just a change in when it clips (DR) if Jordan Drake is correct.

I posted this in the Leica Q Review thread as well...
You can download this Camera Store Leica Q Review video in 4k with 4K video downloader, all you do is copy and paste the youtube URL into it. Here is the link.... https://www.4kdownload.com/products/product-videodownloader
This video is 1.9 gig in size, I tested it with Media Info and the bit rate is 19.7 Mbps...as opposed to the in cam bitrate of 96-100 mbps, so its dramatically reduced from even the in cam compression bit rate.

I have used the GH4 a lot myself for nearly a year now and I am very familiar with the Cine profiles as well as Portrait, Natural etc..
There was mention of problems in the mid tone details of the white box behind him based on the youtube viewing (its actually cream with a light green hue...there are two more further away to his right) they look perfectly fine to me, definitely not horrible or anything
close to that, I guess its hard to judge on youtube, But I have a downloaded version and a really good 2560 x 1440 monitor, and I cant see anything that really bothers me, even at the crappy 19.7 Mbps ...apart from the obvious youtube compression blocking in hi contrast areas.

I have been sceptical about V-Log to be honest, especially about Panasonics sluggish delivery and poor communication on the subject, but after seeing this, I have to say it has exceeded my expectations, and I see it as being a big plus for the GH4,
the mid tones are also present in the highlited tree bark, leaves and some shadows to the right, and to me...there is a ton of detail there, with a lovely balance from hilight to the dark areas of the image (incl mid tones)..and this is also present elsewhere.

Going thru the entire video and closely looking at the shots. I can honestly say that this is some of the best footage I have seen from the GH4 in terms of nicely balanced contrast and its clean without being sterile, and the skin tones are miles better than Cine-D to my eyes, so I can only imagine what a good film maker can do with this...considering that Jordan probably only had days not weeks or months to get a grip on this profile.
I guess we may arrive at a slightly different conclusion when its finally delivered, one thing is for sure tho, the 8 bit in cam image wont be worse.... it will be a lot better than the 19.7 Mbps that this youtube vid is...and the 10 bit probably evena lot better still....So right now based on the downloaded 4K version of this vid...I really love the look, its exceeded what I had hoped for, cant wait!!

Yes better not take this too off-topic - suffice to say it's amazing how productive I became after leaving the EOSHD forum! Apart from loosing my patience with Mr Reid I knew I was happy with my cameras for a long while so it was just a distraction geeking out on new tech. I've shot two promotional jobs (me doing everything end-to-end) both with a GH4 and BMPCC in equal measure. They don't match easily but they do compliment each other very well. Where one fails the other succeeds - the pocket I generally use with long lenses for closeups and the GH4 with wides (both because of moire-free detail and because in 4K I can always crop a bit in post). I have the 0.71 Metabones permanently on the GH4 and the 0.58 on the Pocket - which means both have about a 1.7X crop, which is fine for me. I'm not really tempted by the 0.64 GH4 speed booster as it's not such a big difference. I have the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 on the GH4 fairly constantly and I like the focal length with the 0.71X SB. It would be too short with the 0.64 and because it's 1.8 aperture I won't miss the extra light much. I have a Tokina 11-16mm if I need to go wider. I like both cameras about equally. The BMPCC image is very special but I do still struggle to predict how an image is going to come out. I really enjoy grading the prores files and prefer to make them contrasty, saturated and sharp(which helps matching with the GH4) rather than the washed-out, film-like BMPCC stuff you see on Vimeo a lot. When it works it looks amazing because the image has so much colour depth and dynamic range.

Anyways, hopefully V-Log (if it ever arrives) will help with matching the two cameras more easily. I like the idea of adding a Blackmagic Video Assist to the GH4 to get 10bit 422 1080p from the 4K feed. With V-log I think it would bring the GH4 very close to what I love about the Pocket. I know what you mean about the C100 though - I regularly daydream about selling all my stuff and buying a C100 Mark II and Canon mount lenses just to make my life easier. Ergonomics, IS lenses, DAF, Canon colour, low light, minimal rolling shutter, built-in audio, minimal use of hard drive space, an image that always delivers. Gosh it would be nice! If I could guarantee paying it or it through work within a year I'd get it in a heartbeat. But 8-bit 4.2.0 1080p for that price is a hard pill to swallow. Especially when the URSA Mini is on its way.

On the subject of colour (V-Log hopefully solving the skintone issue; Canon colour being such a big draw for the C100; 10bit 4.2.2 options for cheap cameras now) I saw some really lovely footage the other day and realised pretty quickly it was just 5D MkIII H.264. it was shot at golden hour (pretty low light) and very shallow DOF (avoiding sharpness issues). The colours were just stunning and the full-frame look of course very nice. Dynamic range didn't bother me at all. It was all down to the Canon colours. There's been so much focus on how obsolete it has become in the last year or so, I forget that it's not all about specs and some cameras just have a great personality (I guess that's why Canon can charge so much). I guess that's how you feel about the D810. I still miss the special sauce I got from my D5300 sometimes ...
