GH4 GH4 V-log?

"A new LOG gamma file color space, which according to Panasonic is “being evaluated for market release in 2015.""

It depends on your definition of market release. Is that market as in "financials" or as opposed to beta?

Panasonic never promised an V-Log, it has all been speculation. But I think that speculation just got some traction with the showing at NAB.

Whether that makes you sleep better at night....?

The CameraStoreTV guys loved the V-log L that they got to play with, saying that it solved the whole highlight retention and skintone color issue for them. The sample V-log L footage looked great, especially with it being able to retain tons of detail in the fluffy white clouds in the sky. ( I am wondering if this new V-log will add another F-stop in DR in the final image ? )

What an anti-climax. Ha.

My disdain for Panasonic and MFT has been sealed.

My Panasonic V-Series, "Made in Japan", "THX-Certified", Plasma screwing up three-times in one year aside, the rather expensive cost of mediocre MFT lenses, and now the over-protection and stingy withdrawal of V-Log puts the final nail in the coffin.

"V-Log needs more testing",- yeah, right, sure it does...

Blackmagic is giving us gems for peanuts. The old-guard should take note.

Yeah, this whole will they or won't they is really killing what should have been a great announcement, at a time when Blackmagic is putting feet to the fire.

All Panasonic has to do to get the buzz going is to come out today and say "Yes, it's in v2.2 and will be released on this date" or even "We've heard you loud and clear, v2.3 will be out two weeks from now" and everyone who owns a GH4 will breathe a sigh of relief, look at their current camera and not have to think about Blackmagic's offerings.

I don't get the focus on anamorphic (when very few shooters have or use the function, or if they do use it, it's using $20,000 high end lenses like the sample videos), when EVERY video shooter using a GH4 would kill for the V-Log curve to be enabled, leading to a bunch of new, higher quality footage to counter the Blackmagic announcements.

Love my GH4 and I'm holding out, but Panasonic's PR team should be fired, post haste.

Get on it Panasonic!! Your time to shine is NOW, not two weeks from now.

Cheers from Berlin,

Paul :)

P.S. And please add some video guideline options! It's SO easy to implement and will help so many people. 16:9, crop marks for title safe, 2.39:1 cinemascope.

I agree, this update will benefit very few users of the GH4, sure its a nice headline feature.

There are MANY issues I have the GH4 in terms of usability, that would make it such a joy to use (admittedly I'm probably in a small minority) and I've badgered LumixUSA with them, but looks like it falls on deaf ears.

But the V-LOG-L update would be at least something everyone can use now at no cost in glass and yet get more results from the camera.

Agreed. from all my viewings and shooters I know and videos watched online, I'm GUESSING maybe 2% of film makers bother with Anamophic. I think it is cool and all, and considered stepping in to it, but in the end, didn't really see any real world benefit. So, all this focus, seems over the top, when my Magic Lantern already had video guidelines, and Cinestyle gave me LOG-ish years ago.

Puzzling why Anamorphic was touched on in TWO updates already. The CEO shoots anamorphic or something? :D

I've seen MAYBE one post asking for anamoprhic abilities, but there have been several asking for simple guidelines and tons for log, of course.

Sometimes it comes down to the ease of adding features. Anamorphic is basically taking what the camera can already do. Sort of like the hack with the GH2. The hack never really added any new features but opened up capabilities already in the camera. Anamorphic piggy backs on what the sensor can already do by windowing a 4x3 portion of the sensor with just enough pixels that the processor can handle for up to 30fps. V-log is an entirely new feature that the camera wasn't initially designed for. I agree anamorphic is kind of silly but it was a stupid simple thing for them to add and generated a bit of film making buzz around it.

Besides the first firmware update that added the photo mode had nothing to do with anamorphic. It was the film making community that came up with the idea of using it for anamorphic since it could record video 4x3. The photo mode was initially designed as an alternative way for photographers to shoot video to extract stills. Panasonic noticed the anamorphic buzz around the new photo mode and decided to take it a step further with very little to no extra effort involved.

The only GH4 announcement was for the anamorphic firmware. VLog may be included in some future firmware update, but there was absolutely no timetable given. Other than to say it won't be in this one and it won't be in the next one. Ayone telling you Vlog is imminent simply does not know what they are talking about. It is not.

Well, I guess that settles it. Thanks, Barry.

I ALMOST made a whole other thread about paying for new features... but I didn't want to plant any ideas. :) That price should be closer to $50 in my mind (this is a CONSUMER camera, not PRO), but seeing as other company's charge 10 times that to license codecs and junk, $200 SEEMS kinda ok. Unless I can tweak my image highlites and get close to that recovery ability already. I'd rather spend $50 on special advanced software updates that aren't really needed, than $1900 on some new GH5X. Heck, I might need even buy LOG if available --- haven't needed it yet.

Historically, MAGIC LANTERN added twice the features for free, and Technicolor also gave away CINESTYLE free, hate to pay for a simple PICTURE STYLE

I'd gladly get the camera and pay that sum - if they enable that 10bit internal codec ;)
