GH4 GH4 Settings Request

Hey GH4 users,

I'm going to have a chance to get some shots from a GH4 on some professional charts tomorrow, and would like to try developing some DVX200 profiles to see if I can match them.

So what I'm looking for is recommendations on what GH4 settings you guys really like for the most pleasing "out of the box" look. Not interested in grading profiles, but in in-camera looks that deliver the most pleasing color, the most pleasing skin tones, etc.

Is there any consensus (or close to consensus) on what settings people find most representative of the GH4 "look" that most people like most?

Thanks!

Hi Barry, I think all of the profiles have an odd color shift but the least would be Natural. I've shot some TV spots with Natural, CiinelikeD and Standard, Natural gave me the least headaches "out of the box." CinelikeV is real contrasty (as I'm sure you already know) and CinelikeD has weird greens and sometimes oranges (although that Leeming LUT sure does the trick and is my new go to). All that to say I would suggest Natural.

consensus !?! I doubt it, but hope so...

Natural
+1 contrast
-2 sharp
0 NR
+1 Sat
-2 hue

0 Master Ped
-3/+2 highlight/shadow
iDynamic off or low
0-255 lum

Although sometimes Portrait with just about the same settings - bit more orange, but faces 'pop' more.

Eager to see other replies.

For strict, out-of-the-box shooting, I used to use Portrait with slightly lowered contrast. That gives the best skin tones when not using any sort of LUT down the line.

But since developing my LUT, I have to of course recommend Cinelike D -5 -3 -5 0 0 with Leeming LUT One, since the LUT fixes the colour issues completely and gives you clean, high dynamic range images with only the smallest of curves adjustment needed to give sensational images.

HTH!

Cheers from Berlin,

Paul :)

Agree with Paul about Portrait, forgot about that one. I have also personally found that adjusting settings too much in Natural (or any other profile for that matter) messes up textures and colors. Could just be me but that's my take.

i would use the default settings of cine-d, natual and std -- nothing else! it's much more useful to compare this simple settings in a clean and accurate way than all this other possible exotic variants...

Agreed. But I would add Cinelike V to Cinelike D, Natural and Standard.

In natural daylight CineV with all zero's gives perfect skin tones and requires virtually zero color correction. It also has the most accurate contrast out of the box. CineD and all these flattened profiles are so un natural looking without tons of curves and or contrast added.

Any weird color casts in CineV are due to electronic lighting and white balance issues.

Just my $0.02 on why you should include CineV all zero's.

Cheers,
Pete

I have come to that conclusion about Cine V as well. I raise shadow detail +3 and use idynamic low to make it less contrasty and eke out more dynamic range. Grades easily and colors are accurate even when using the stock white balance settings.

@Battuta - is this your shot? Looks great!

Yep. Used a solid resin 4x4 ND filter. Minor color correction in post to remove a slight blue cast. Settings were Cine V -1,-5,-5,-3, 0, Shadow+3, idynamic low. The cheap ND was usable but I need to get better ones, that don't have a color cast.

Natural Profile
Contrast -1
Sharpness -3
NR -5
Sat 0
Hue 0

Luminance 0-255
Master Ped 0
Highlights -1, Shadows 0
iDynamic turned OFF.

Best skin tones and natural color. For Lumix lenses, which are more contrasty than older vintage lenses, you can dial the contrast down to -2 or -3.

Nice one - thanks.

I settled on natural as well, after examining the other chooses and ultimately concluding that natural yield the best results for me.
