For some reason Ive just become interested in this camera, and maybe the Yagh box.

I am looking for a small camera that will intercut with my FS7, to produce top end HD material (possibly acquired in '4k')

Grade-ability and colour depth are more important than resolution (Id take 10bit 1080 over 8bit 4k)

Currently I have a FS100 and feel that it is not quite up to the job - it does however offer long roll times and XLR sound inputs.

Im assuming my goto lens will be the SLRm12mm

Ive watched various reviews but they all seem to be from the camera launch.

My questions..

1) is there still audio mis-synch, with/without the yag box

2) is there a way to get 10bit HD, eg SDI from the yag box to my BM Shuttle recorder

3) does the camera run of the internal batt if the yag box is fitted.

I'm assuming that my setup would be 90% running off a Vlock say for interview Bcam and then off internal for 'little' shots, such as mounting the cam in car/inside fridge etc. Ideally I would not dismount from the Yag for these shots

4) Roll Time - does the cam shut down after 29mins (for example)

if it does could I do longer take with a Shuttle recorder.

A side note - there is no budget for an Ody recorder.

Thanks

Sam MM

5) ficker - last night I shot under dodgy house LEDs and got rid of flicker with the FS7 but failed with the Fs100.

1) Haven't had any issues with sync (w/out yagh)
2) Yes GH4 can output 10 bit HD
3) Internal battery does not work with yagh. Entire unit must be powered via yagh's 4 pin XLR.
4) Only GH4s sold in the EU have a recording limit. Even then you can bypass this when outputting solely to an external recorder.
5) GH4 has a shutter mode to reduce/eliminate flicker.

Thank you great to hear about 10bitHD.

1) early sound (ie a little off synch) was well documented at launch did a FW fix this?

3).. I understand the yag would need power to run the XLR/SDI and that when the power is input it will run the camera, but if it is affixed it stops the camera running in 'normal' mode from the int batt?

The delay is really bad with the YAGH when feeding a monitor. I believe it's the same as without the YAGH.

Yes. 4K out of the YAGH requires all four SDI outputs. No internal recording in 10bit mode.

You can power and use the camera with a battery inside the GH4 but it wont power the YAGH. In order to change the internal battery the YAGH has to be removed from the GH4.

Nope

if it does could I do longer take with a Shuttle recorder.
The GH4 breaks clips up after 30 minutes of recording. Seamless.

A side note - there is no budget for an Ody recorder.
Then the YAGH for you is only for audio input and monitor out?

The yag would give me sdi for secure long sdi run to 10bit 1080 recorder (?) And nice input from my vlock and in some cases xlr in.
imagine cam on big jib and a reorder monitor and batt down by operator

Here is my setup I used for a project. I had all the audio going into the YAGH.

I have a Sony FS700 and Odyssey 7Q, this combo is extemely comparable in quality to a Sony FS7. I also have an A7s...and it can match extremely well to the FS700 footage. A7s has much more similar color science, all your lenses used with your FS7 can carry over to the A7s, and ISO range with low light sensitivity will allow you to match much closer to the FS7 vs the GH4 when lighting your set. It is more expensive, but buying a whole new line up of lenses for the GH4 will rack up cost fast, why not have a lenses that work on both cams. GH4 is nice cam, not knocking it, but for matching to your FS7, I think the A7s would be the winner.

The a7s has poor connectivity and I'm not convinced by slog 8 bit - I was thinking to get a slrmagic 12mm and I have nikkors from 14 to 600 that will work with cheap adapters - mainly I shoot at 3.5 so a 50 at 2 will also "match" ... Maybe !

Here is a music video I shot that is not released yet. I would say about 25% to 30% of the shots in it were using A7s. It spliced together pretty darn well with the FS700 + 7Q.

Thanks for showing that. It has (a very pretty) magic bullet style grade, which is not where I will be going at all. If I need the cameras to match it would be to really match in a lit interview situation.

You're going to love the 10bit 422 image out of the GH4. I've been using my ninja blade now they got the pull down sorted, and I'm absolutely knocked out. Less appealing is the delay on the hdmi out, but I can use an iPad wirelessly and get around that.

Hi.

Can you clarify your helpful post..

-Who got progressive sorted? panny or ninja - I would hope to use my BMShuttle to record 10bit HD 25FPS progressive.

-HDMI out delay? I need to monitor, probably using a fat HDMI lead from the yag box and an SDI monitor as funds allow.

Is there lag at those o/puts?
