GH4 Long lens options

The 100-300 is not bad, but if I didn't need ois or AF I would go with legacy glass. I've done extensive shooting with the Nikon 300 f4 ED AF and Canon FDn 300 f2.8L on AF100, GH2 and GH3. With the GH4 I am getting almost a 500mm ff equivalent fov using a Canon FDn 200 f2.8 (IF), and it looks really good.

I have a 600mm AIS ED that is amazing on the GH4, but it takes a 15 lbs tripod and fluid head to keep it steady.

I also have the 100-300 and it is a very nice lens. It is difficult to do manual focus with though.

Cheers,
Pete

The 45-200 surprised me as being pretty darn sharp, even at 200mm. But it was difficult to control handheld at that end.

All of the shots are on a motion-controlled rig or a set of sticks. No hand-holding for this project. I am looking for resolution and details.

I tried my Nikon 70-300 F4.5-5.6G with the Metabones. Frankly, it looked like crap, but I was using a cheap Vari-ND. I need to try the same setup with a quality ND to see if that was what made the image look like crap.

The 100-300, the 45-200 and the Nikon 70-300 are consumer grade lenses and thus you need to adjust your expectations accordingly. Currently there's only one good telephoto zoom, and that's the 35-100/2.8.

Someone mentioned the Nikon 300mm lenses, and they're all good. My favourite for this is the AFS 300mm f/4. It's so good even the dense sensor of the Nikon 1 cameras doesn't hamper it. Of course if you can get one of those superteles...

I've got this lens and at the long end (appr 400mm equiv) it seems to work well for video tripod mounted. In the project below I also kept pulling it off the tripod for handheld still images and it also worked well. The OIS helped (I left it on even when tripod mounted since I was doing no panning).
