GH4 GH4 and MOVI messing around at Cinegear. I have a question.

MOVI 5.0 and GH4 with kit lens at CINEGEAR. Excuse the hot exposure, the rep didn't want me to touch the camera after it was balanced. They did let me pop an SD card in and roll some nonsense.

The card I popped in was a 32GB Class 10 card that I bought 3 years ago from Fry's on sale. Why was it able to record 4k? Do we really need those crazy new UHS-II cards? Do the UHS-II cards only matter for the 50fps still bursts?

I also rolled for over 4 minutes in cinema 4k on the same class 10 sd card with no problem.

I've been using a Sandisk Extreme Pro 32gig class 10 U1 for a week and a half and have never had an issue in any mode. Never have tried the 200mbps 1080 though. Don't really see a need for it. FPS override is only 24mbps 1080 and will never be an issue with any card.

I have hit the file size limit and the cam automatically started a new file in 4k 30p MOV mode. I worked fine, but Vegas sees the last frame and holds it for over double the length of the audio. Kind of a weird overlap between files when it starts a new one. Haven't researched it much though as I virtually never film that long.

Cheers,
Pete

Good question, this is a point of confusion for many people. The answer is you never needed UHS-II cards.

What is recommended is a U3 card. U3 is a speed class rating, UHS-I/UHS-II refers to the bus speed of the card's interface. Both UHS-I and UHS-II cards can have a U3 speed class rating. I bet if they used a different letter for the speed class instead of "U" (e.g. Z3, for "ze speed!"), there wouldn't be as much confusion as there is.

See this blog post regarding memory cards and the GH4 for more information.

That's a great article! I rocked Transcend cards in my 60d for years and they are still running great. I'll probably just keep using them with the gh4, because I will mainly be shooting Cinema 4k and 1080/96fps.
