GH4 GH3 vs GH4

Tried a google search and kept coming up with a 12 minute video by Griffin... just curious if there is a chart that compares... I don't need the 4k (well I'd love it but I can live without it). If 4k is the major difference then I can save money and go with the GH3 but I just want to make sure there is not something else that I would be missing on the GH3 vs the GH4.

Trying to decide between GH3, GH4, or Nikon D7200...
Moving away from Canon because I don't want to go up in price just to gain a headphone jack...
Headphone jack is what has brought me to the GH models as well as the D7200...

Wife will use the camera mostly for "soccer mom" needs in the stills world for our kids, but I will use it for video mode for video depositions for a law firm as well as sit down interviews for some church testimonial videos...

The GH3 is a great camera. Comparing to any Canon DSLR is like looking at ancient technology. 4K is not going anywhere. Only get if you need it now, but 4K will be pretty commonplace soon.

Off the top of my head, compared to the GH3 the GH4 has...

- 1 F-stop better low-light performance
- At least 1 F-stop better dynamic range when shooting video
- No moire in your image if you shoot in 4K mode
- Much better audio ( at least 7 dB quieter, and accepts a real -50 dB mic level input )

The Nikon will probably give you better stills. But, the GH4 was made to shoot video. If I had to choose just one, I would go with the GH4.

The GH4 includes focus peaking, which is very helpful. But if you're planning on only delivering HD files, the GH3 is very competent as well, and significantly cheaper.

The EVF in the GH4 is significantly improved over the GH3. There are some reports from GH3 owners of not being able to see well in the GH3 EVF, Panasonic seems to have tried to make the EVF optical system more compact and you must get your eye aligned right "in the channel". I think eyeglass wearers have the most trouble.

Having said that, I have two GH3's and a GH4. i had to work with the GH3's for about a year with eyeglasses then I had cataract surgery which much improved my vision (I've worn eyeglasses most of my life). I've been able to effectively use the GH3 EVF both when wearing eyeglasses and after surgery without.

My advice is find someone who has one and see how well you can use the EVF. Used GH3's are now getting pretty attractively priced and a lot I've seen advertised have had low shutter counts.

This site's buy/sell forum and the one on mu-43.com are good places to look.

I shoot RAW on the GH3, How does the GH4 "destroy" the gh3 in terms of stills?
Heh, no idea. For still quality the two cameras are similar. But there are some upgrades (EVF, focus peaking) for the GH4 that makes it so much nicer to use.

If you're shooting sport though, the D7200 is going to be better. However that requires a decent lens.

Actually the Nikon D7200 is the first lower cost Nikon with aperture control in live view.

I dont think that is correct... I tried one out at the local camera shop and it would not change aperture while in live view... I had to turn it off... my work around plan was to get a "non G" lens and just do it manually on the lens with the ring...

I checked a few reviews and I think you're right. What a drag. This was supposed to be the first low cost Nikon that would allow you to change aperture in Live View mode. This is about the only reason why I would recommend upgrading to the 7200 for video, as it doesn't seem to be much of an improvement over the older D7100 camera when it comes to video.

Only the D750 and up has the power aperture modes. The D7000 line of chassis doesn't have that and quite a few things, which is strange. I always thought that it's just a firmware upgrade away from them.
