GH3 GH3 or Black Magic Camera?

The BMCC will probably be a small but visible bump in IQ, with more room for post. Plus raw, if you need it, wow. Plus serious pan and scan. But there's so many factors to consider. The aliasing on the GH3 is kind of drag, if you shoot stuff that might cause that. There will be tons more footage to look at soon.

I wouldn't say small- in the right hands it would be a massive bump in image quality when comparing RAW on the BMCC vs. AVHCD on the GH2. That's like comparing JPEG stills to RAW stills- if the person doing the shooting and the post-grading really knows their stuff the difference is night and day...

is it really true that you cant delete clips in-camera?
if so, i dont care who you are or how you shoot, that's just flat out retarded. especially considering its SSD based... : (

That's funny, because I was thinking the opposite: who actually risks deleting anything on an important shoot?

I don't know the last time I was on a shoot where I had to make sure I didn't lose footage and I deleted a clip for any reason at all.

i do it all the time. if there was a take i KNOW is useless (especially when its a long one) i'll kill it just in the interest of space and not having to sort through it later. then if its the end of the shoot, the media is full or nearly full and i know its going to add another offload process and we just need one more shot. i'll go in and kill some of the shots we have already logged as bad.

i guess its just a difference in workflow. ive done it like that since the day i first went tapeless... heck, that was one of the initial appeals.

to defend your point though i have killed a couple bloopers i might have liked to have kept a time or two
AND i do repeat in my head as im doing it "menu, operation, delete NOT format" ; )

Definitely different. haha. I won't even erase media until I absolutely have to. Sometimes footage sits on cards for a good week or two after the shoot.

But, this is also the mindstate of someone that's lost footage once before. And once you do it once, you fear it for the rest of your life and anything even remotely connected to the concept of losing footage is a no no.

I know it seems strange, but it's just a different kind of camera. Alexa and Epic also can't delete clips.

I'm with Kholi, and really only erase cards after footage is on two drives, and then often only weeks later when the next shoot arrives. You just never know!

yeah, i feel ya there. but i never delete anything unless i know its useless in the context of the project. like a rice-rocket flying by killing the dialog.

and i did, ONCE, very early on press format instead of delete. but fortunately only lost about 4 shots of b-roll that i was able to easily reshoot in about 2o minutes. that was enough to ingrain the mantra into my brain

I guess it isn't so cut and dry, but it's hard not to look at 13 stops and internal Pro Res recording, plus some of the footage out there (some, not all) and not go "Blackmagic or Else!"

I think either way Blackmagic would win in my case, I absolutely want a copy of Resolve so even if it were just a GH3 thing, well it's still gonna be a base of two-thousand to shell out. And who knows, by the time the EF mounted camera's actually shipping even I might have a change of heart and just hold onto the GH2 + GH3 team.

Enjoying the 12/1.6 SLR Magic Hyperprime so much... hard to want to give that up, and the sweet 0.95 options, PL mount, 60P, and yes like some people mention the ultra stealth option.

Know what would make it an easy choice? =D If the GH3 was out RIGHT now.

Yeah, as far as the BMCC is concerned, I don't think there's a competitor until you start talking RED Scarlet / Alexa... and even then, the BMCC is very attractive even when pitted right up against the biggest players in the game right now. The image is truly astounding when you examine some of the well produced footage out there... It's honestly is on an entirely different level in almost every way. RAW, 13 Stops, great motion cadence... it's just too good for the 3k price. This is a through and through digital cinema camera.

The GH3 is a viable option for a lot things, and speaking frankly has a LOT in common with the the GH2 and NEX series cameras, to the point where justifying an upgrade would entail the need for the extra goodies like wifi and the beefier body etc, because in terms of IQ, it's still anybody's guess if it's superior by any measurable formula. I'm waiting anxiously along with you guys though... really want to see what the GH3 is capable of.

As I often end up using little pieces of 'bad takes' in finished projects- you never know what might come in handy when you get to editing- I rarely delete stuff during production. I mean generally speaking, adding one more memory card to avoid having this issue is way cheaper than getting back to reshoot something...

I'd go for the GH3 because there's a real release date. BMC was supposed to be in full production now and they've made about 20 with a huge delay ahead of them. I wouldn't be surprised is BlackMagic ceases to exist before fully releasing the camera.

You do know that BlackMagic Designs is a huge multihundredmillion dollar company and was, long before they considered making a camera, and will continue to be even if the camera were an absolute flop, right? I mean, nobody knows their exact sales figures because they're private, but I can't imagine that the BMC will account for more than, maybe, half a percent of overall sales... if that...

I realize that. But did you see the post from them about how they're "looking at a factory filled with 20M in parts sitting around?" That can't be good. The company might not flop, but I wouldn't be surprised if the plug is eventually pulled on this camera before a substantial amount are made.

oh, certainly. but you never know when you're going to show up to a shoot where the rules arent what youre used to. the client tied your PA up with questions, or the talent took 100 takes to get his line. the last ferry is leaving in 20 min and you still have to break down - or whatever.

sometimes you have to make a choice. and with 15 years behind me, i'm pretty confident about what is and isnt going to be usable. not that i havent been wrong here or there, but in general, i just like being able to toss what i either know or predict isnt what i want. and a camera - especially a tapeless camera, that doesnt allow that? thats just silly in my book.

but thats just MY book. there are several more boks on the shelf. some probably better than mine ; )

I think the main point here is that the BMCC should have the option of deleting a clip. RAW takes up lots of space, and quality SSDs aren't cheap. I can definitely see the usefulness of having the ability to delete unwanted clips. There's nothing forcing anyone to use that feature if they don't feel comfortable with it.

Hi Barry: Welcome back from outer space! I'm pretty sure we all saw some of your handiwork this past week. Cheers!

Nick Snow: Concerning BMD going out of business or giving up on the BMCC anytime soon: Get real. Cheers!

All: Concerning whether the BMCC should allow deleting clips in-camera: When it gets down to it, the BMCC is a $3K video camera. All other ~$3K video cameras allow deleting clips w/o requiring a computer to do it. Among other things, most BMCC users will expect to be able to delete clips in-camera. Just because the BMCC will sometimes be used on big-budget shoots is no reason to inconvenience most of its users. Cheers!
