GH2 Gh3 full specs now posted

I just sat and watched a ton of camera clips from the GH3, straight from camera in various situations. Take it or leave it:

Avchd > all-I. At least with this firmware.

The DR has definitely been increased. I don't know by how many stops but it's there.

The color is much much better.

Cojldnt spot Bandung no matter how I peeped. Plenty of situations for it though.

Don't ask me how or why, but it is a ton more flexible in post than any DSLR out there, and I am pretty sure the AF100 and FS100.

Rokling shutter looks improved. Lots of handheld.

Noise is tame and smooth. Looks nice.

Detail in avchd looks like gh2 unhacked.

Lowlight is much better. Confiden better.

Slow and fast motion looks great. So does 60P.

When PV gets ahold of firmware it old get nasty.

Can you please link me to some of these videos you mention, thanks Kholi!

Apologies. Not great with these symbols. Are you saying AVCHD is better than All-I (right now)?

Curious about this. Had the GH1 at one time, but I was much too spoiled by my 5DM2 when it came to shooting in low light. Wonder how the GH3 will compare?

More detail in lowlight, noise still present but doesn't look bad at all. Easy to remove.

And, looks like there's a good stop to a stop and a half of leway to bring an image up.

Can't unfortunately. I couldn't even leave with any. But there was a lot, some night wide stuff that looks particularly crazy for a camera that costs 1299.99

From what I saw, definitely. I think ALL-I needs to be more than what it is right now, but likely that was the safe bitrate for cheaper cards.

Again, at least from the firmware that was used to test that footage.

It definitely still looks close to GH footage, as well. Just unhacked stuff.

Are you saying ALL-I looks soft? Are there other issues that you're seeing? I'm assuming upping it to 100Mbps would probably alleviate those issues?

All_I looks soft and IMO muddy. It reminds me more of MKIII ALL-I. I would not have made the choice to use it over AVCHD, which looks great. It probably needs to go beyond 100 to be a better alternative than AVCHD I would wager.

That's something for someone more understanding of the format to answer, though.

Right now, the AVCHD implementation looks at least as strong as FS100's, which I thought was pretty darned good.

Just curious to know, Would there be any visual diff between 4:2:0 and 4:1:1? I know were used to seeing cams with 4:2:2. But i'm not sure why we dont see cams outputting 4:1:1. Barry?

Sweet, sounds like good news. Where on earth did you get to see all this gh3 footage? Jealous.
Excited to see some well shot stuff on AVCHD, maybe play around with it a bit.

At least I'm more excited about this camera now, the all-i stuff was kinda pushing me away for a minute there.

I was afraid that 72mbps using All-I wouldn't be enough to hold the image together. True intraframes means having no motion-based compression efficiency which requires a very large bitrate. Even the Flowmotion hack uses 100mbps for 3-GOP. Kholi, have you tried the 50mbps IPB mode yet? I wouldn't be surprised if it's the best mode on the camera.

4:1:1 is disgusting and has no place in cameras anymore. 4:2:0 at least in progressive material is vastly superior to 4:1:1.

I'm with you. The more I watched the scarce material out there, the more I became turned off. IMO I would not be showing off this camera's material in ALL-I mode, but that's just me more than likely.

Can't say where I sawr the footage but it was a pretty good amount in some great places. One lowlight shot was pretty interesting, as it's definitely something that I would've struggled with finding a balance with on the Gh2, yet this looked very very nice.

So I take it you're excited for Sedna on the GH3?

Definitely.

I didn't actually get to play with the camera (yet >:] )

I saw some ALl-I stuff and then AVCHD stuff and to me, or my eyes, I couldn't see why anyone would use the ALL-I mode over AVHCD. Maybe there's something I'm missing, but AVCHD looked every bit as good as GH2 non-Hacked as far as overall fidelity, and had a better base than GH2 in the what I'd think are the most important areas.

Keep your fingers crossed, or start yelling at Panasonic to let me get my hands on the camera and it might happen. >:]

Yes it does. The video yesterday from the Panny reps confirmed you can use it as a remote monitor for video (and can control functions like zoom remotely with one of the X lenses). Just watch the video in this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-YES-uncompressed-HDMI-firmware-focus-peaking

I had watched that video. I wasn't completely confident that he was confirming for video. Now I'm starting to get reasonably confident that it is in there. I still want to hear them say "VIDEO", which he didn't. I transcribed what he said. One of the guys asked him about clean 4:2:2 HDMI output with video recorder HDD units. He responded:

"It does have an HDMI port on it that is live.. we call it director mode.. so if the client is wishing to see what you're photographing, you can hook up a TV monitor to that, or you can also for the wifi connection give them their iphone so they can see what you're doing." Then talks about the HDMI trying to be as clean as possible, but not being sure if it's 4:2:2 (which means it probably isn't).

So obviously, he's using the word "photographing" in a video sense because he's talking about HDMI output recorders. So his follow-up comment should also be applying to video. Still, he worded it in a way that could be sidestepped if it doesn't turn out to be in it. The way it's worded on the main website is what really has me questioning it. So I'm still going to look for extra confirmation on it, but... yeah, I'm starting to get giddy now. ;) This is probably the feature I'm most exciting about.

Anyone know how long you can record with this camera? Is there a limit?

The GH3 supports SDXC UHS-I cards and a new Lexar 256GB card has just been announced, so I would imagine you could shoot for 24 hours using AVCHD 24Mbit and an external power supply.

I knew from the moment I saw Bloom's video that something had a very "nex 5n feel" to it. And now we hear that the GH3 actually does have a sony sensor (confirmed indirectly by Inoue), which makes sense considering how different it is from GH1/GH2. Friggin knew it. If I do end up getting the GH3, the VERY first thing I'm going to do, is plop it right beside the nex, which at that point should have the ball rolling on the hack, with more increased bit rates etc. I have a sneaking suspicion that under the same circumstances / lenses etc, they will look surprisingly alike.

Even if it is using the same Sony sensor, it's Panasonic electronics processing the image beyond the sensor, so I would doubt that the finished image would be the same.

I know, but even if Bloom's video is ANY indication of what this camera is like, after post processing etc, then at least in my eyes it does have a very sony-ish vibe. Not bad at all, just not the Panny I know and love. Time will tell, can't wait to start seeing some new footage. I think the month or 2 behind a cameras release is pretty fun, all the speculation and shot calling haha, I've been right on one count so far. Let's all call Panasonic and have them send us some pre-production GH3's to blog about for a week.
