GH2 Gh3 full specs now posted

Agreed... that's too bad. My favorite thing about the GH13 is the ability to use old manual lenses which give images a unique character... but going full manual almost requires a monitor to know what you're getting. In-cam peaking would have been a nice touch.
I've got a Loupe for the GH2 so I can focus with a manual lens fairly well, but using peaking on say the XF300 for example I find it gives me that extra level of assurance I've got it right. Otherwise like you say the only way to be entirely sure is with an external monitor.

I guess the fact you can monitor on a tablet could be a workaround?

Incredibly sad and really not very intelligent of Pana if true. I still will buy it but miss such features a lot.

I feel the same way. The new rugged Body and 100% stable high bitrates will be enough for me to upgrade but Peaking and Zebras were something I was really looking forward to. It all reminds me why I usually stay away from rumours pre-launch. Keep those hopes realistic.

I have the same loupe. Wonder if it fits on the GH3? Would make it a much more obvious upgrade if my accesories still fit.

Isn't the new LCD screen larger? I think we will find that all the other 3rd party loupes will now fit the GH3 better. I have a much cheaper loupe that is great but it was designed for the larger LCD screen and I had to make my own way of attaching it to my GH2.

In-cam peaking would have been a nice touch.

Maybe if we all whine loud enough they will implement it and add zebra.... ;-) I have so much nice old glass and for something like my old sigma 170-500 focus peaking for wildlife would be the killer option. Sigh....

I am slightly tech-blind so I can still have - probably incredibly unrealistic - hopes the powers-to-be may decide to implement it...... ;-)

I think Panasonic is going the way of Apple, which you may or may not like. There are really good touch-focus options on the OLED screen and the company says that follow focus in video is implemented. Not so good if using the EVF, but I'll reserve judgments until the unit is my hands. AND IT WILL BE!!!!!!

I was the one who posted the peaking rumor. Absolutely stupid of Panasonic to not implement this when they know the camera was built for third party lenses ! And I'm pretty disappointed with the lack of 720/120 , which we see they included on two consumer cameras ! All in all , a letdown except for the highbitrate.

I was the one who posted the peaking rumor.

Okay, we will tie you to a wall and throw old SD cards at you for that.... both for very long and for very fast manual glass focus peaking would have been it. I think the video specs are great. And I take photos only in 4:3 an crop later if I need it, so no let down for me here. Now, when the frenzy is over, we wait not so patient for the arrival.

So the GH3 loses the multi-aspect sensor - why take a feature that made the GH1 and GH2 special - a signature GH feature?

for very fast manual glass focus peaking would have been it.
I have to say given that part of the GH2's popularity is down to the fact it has the f0.95 Nokton lenses plus a number of fast manual SLR magic lenses with more in development, focus peaking seems an obvious, common sense feature.

For the price range I can't complain that it doesn't have the feature, even without it, it's a bargain. I still reserve the right to moan though as I'm British and we're expected to do so.

Wow, so much negativity. How many cameras in its price-range HAVE peaking in the first place? What are you currently shooting with that makes this a deal-breaker for you?

...ah all of the sony's !

It's not a deal breaker. I just won't be inclined to jump in as quickly. Peaking and 120p would have been too tempting. For my budget, now I'll probably get some different cameras like a nex5 and an lx7 ...which will give me peaking on my fd lenses and 720/120. By the way the 5n is now selling for 5 bills ...and it has peaking ! Also, I'm not particularly enamored by the size increase...and I'm still pretty happy with the gh13 .

I like that Panasonic at least emphasizes the priority of improving the camera's signal to noise performance. The language in the GH3 press release is unusually specific.

Of course, it remains to be seen if they were successful in meeting their goals, let alone our expectations, but it's great to see a manufacturer "get" the importance of something as basic as S/N performance:

"... The key point here was reducing noise, for which Panasonic focused on the following three areas: (1) minimizing noise in the sensor, (2) preventing sensor noise from entering the output signal, and (3) preventing noise from entering the signal processing circuit, power supply line and grounding line. To reduce noise, it is also important to design the power supply wiring and the signal wiring connected to the engine to be as close to the same length as possible. These measures not only suppress noise but also help to improve processing speed. Standard sensitivity is from ISO 200 to ISO 12800, but the user can set sensitivity to ISO 125 or ISO 25600 by using an extension function. The LPF (Low Pass Filter) has been also newly designed to minimize generation of moire while drawing maximum resolution of the image out of the sensor. ..."

"... The image processor Venus Engine is also refined to achieve superior noise reduction. With a combination of 3DNR (3D Noise Reduction) and MNR (Multi-process Noise Reduction), both bright area and dark area are faithfully reproduced with minimum noise across the entire focusing range in high sensitivity image recording. ..."

Fingers crossed they've made a big improvement concerning S/N compared to the GH1 & GH2.

Next: Dynamic range? I haven't had a chance to read up on that yet.

And then there's the $64 bazillion dollar question: How soon will Panasonic US actually have cameras for sale via authorized _US_ retailer/online dealers? (There's always something: "Anti-Japan" protests in China ...)

Again, fingers crossed ...

Although focus peaking is nice to have, I think it's an over-rated feature. I've found it to be not entirely helpful in a few different Sony cameras I've used. But yes, it's better to have it than not. Personally I prefer a sharp, relatively hi-res viewfinder, which the GH3 may have (haven't used one yet).

I still reserve the right to moan though as I'm British and we're expected to do so.

Yes, but we Huns are much better at it. Listen to Wagner-arias and you know. I will moan, whine, yelp and grind my teeth when I visit my local dealer and hand him pack of new D-mark (should the Euro been have gone by then) in exchange for the not-focus-peaking-thingie. Honestly: video specs, the more rugged body plus hopefully much better handling of noise in low light would have been enough to convince me....

A few points:
1) no mention of an XLR adapter. That leads me to think there is no such custom device, and they were probably thinking that the 3.5mm mic input jack could be used with a BeachTek or such other device. Oh well.
2) It's NTSC/PAL switchable, and you can use 50fps for slow-mo in a 24fps project, that's really cool. They call it "0.48x" playback speed. Not exactly 48fps, which would have been stupendous, but really close!
3) The wide-DR mode seems at first glance to be a sort of Red HDRx type of mode. They show over/underexposed frames being combined for a wide-DR, and then they say that it's available in video shooting too.
4) 72mbps All-I, yeah, whatever, I'll have to try it to see how good it is, I think 72mbps is a bit low for All-I, but 50mbps IBP sounds extremely good. Extremely.
5) Wifi -- can't even imagine what this means. Jib shots, remote shots, start/stop for car and crashcam shots, who knows what all control there is? Apps? Who knows?
6) Multi-aspect sensor does indeed appear to be gone. In the older GH cameras it used a larger-than-Four-Thirds sensor to optimize frame size, and video recording was quite a bit oversized (18.8mm vs. the 17.3mm standard of Four Thirds). Based on the pixel count of the stills modes, it does look like the GH3 uses a standard 17.3mm sensor. Oh well.
7) Optimized low-pass filter and intelligent noise processing sound like pretty advanced tech. Quite interested to see how this plays out.

8) Anyone wanna buy a GH2? Lightly used... :)

Was hoping for 48 fps slomo even more than 60, but it's no deal killer.

Really interested to compare the All-I vs IPB. Many 5D3 users prefer the cadence of it's variable bitrate codec over All-I.
