GH3 GH3 fisheyes

I was wondering if there are any lenses out there that can be adapted to the gh3 that are wider than the rokinon 7.5 or the Panasonic 7-14? I primarily film skateboarding, and would really like something wider! Since the m43 mount is so versatile, I figured there might be something out there.

So you're looking for a full-image circle fish-eye instead of a crop-frame fish-eye lens?

A crop-frame fish-eye crops into the image circle so you only see the 180 degree image diagonally.

Personally I prefer the crop-frame fish-eye, as I hate looking at a small circular 180 degree in all directions fish-eye image sitting in the middle of a horizontal video frame.

No, I'm not looking for a lens that leaves a full circle of vignetting if that's what you mean. Just looking for something that has a bit more distortion than the two lenses I mentioned earlier. Those seem to be the go-to lenses for the GH series fisheyes, but since the crop factor is 2x on the gh3 they're just really not wide enough for my taste.

They are the standard crop-frame fish-eye lenses that are 180 degrees along the image diagonal. There really isn't anything wider that will cover the full image format. 180 degrees diagonal is it, otherwise you're into 180 degree circular image that won't cover the full image area.

A Nikon full frame (FX) lens at 8mm should yield a 35mm equivalent FOV of 16mm without the Metabones speed booster, or about 11.2mm with the speed booster (8mm x 1.4 = 11.2mm).

So if i'm not mistaken, this would be the way to achieve the "widest" lens on a gh3? I've never seen this combo before, so I apologize for my noobish questions.

I suppose it could be, since the Lumix 7-14mm gives a 35mm FOV equivalent of 14-28mm. But keep in mind that on a Nikon it produces images like this:

On a GH3 it'll be a 1.4x crop, so the image will probably look more like this:

This is my rough approximation of a 1.4x crop factor with the GH3's highest resolution aspect ration, which is 3:2 if I'm not mistaken.

Lots of distortion and not worth the money IMO.

Hmm interesting. Distortion is actually what I am aiming for here. It's used to exaggerate the size of obstacles that the skaters are doing tricks on. I guess i'll just wait around until I see an example of this combo. If anyone out there has the speed booster and an 8mm fisheye for there gh3, i'd love to take a look!

Here's how a Nikon 8mm f/2.8 fish-eye lens compares when used as a full image circular fish-eye lens, a "full frame" crop fish-eye lens, and with a Speed-Booster adapter...

...The Samyang 7.5mm fish-eye lens is equivalent to the middle picture.

Thank you sir. Much appreciated.

Although it might not be ideal, I've had luck with C-mount lenses.

That said, this is roughly equivalent to 12mm on the GH2... so maybe not wide enough?

EDIT: Should also mention, this lens needs ETC mode to be used, which effectively throws some of the fisheye away. As I said, it's not ideal... but it could be a place to start.

Just in case there are any other skateboard/action sports filmers out there that are interested in the gh3+8mm+speedbooster combo. It's very a nice combo in my opinion. Here is a very unscientific test of a Nikon mount pro-optic 8mm fisheye (behaves just like Samyang, Rokinon, etc) with a speedbooster, and with a rainbowimaging adapter from the same spot on a tripod. The images have been compressed. I just took the pictures to show how much wider it is with the speedbooster.gh3 8mm sb.jpggh3 8mm.jpg

wow, thanks for those pictures with the speedbooster. that just looks perfect for skateboarding. with that adapter the gh3 is finally the camera i wanted to have in the first place!

Amazing thanks for sharing this example! I have been scouring the internet for examples of that combo and I think I have made up my mind.

Anyone have an example of the speedbooster/gh3/ and 10.5mm 2.8 fisheye?
