GH3 GH3 EVF problem - GH3 owners Please Read!

If you ask me stoneinapond. No, noice is in all modes with manual mode M in low light (when underexpose) In other mode A.S Auto expo compensate so there is no low light.

Bumping this thread as I just turned down a GH3 hold I had with a camera store because of what I'm reading here. Any updates or other people confirming or denying this arguably worse EVF? There's also the weird color cast on the OLED screen I've read about.

I think many are getting confused about the actual resolution of the GH2 EVF vs GH3. The GH1 and GH2 EVFs were based on DLP-like technology (I think they were made by Epson), which uses every dots sequentially, displaying RVB pixels by alternating them in time (causing by the way some rainbow effects). The GH3 OLED EVF uses a more conventional spatial RVB arrangement, so the dots should be divided by 3 to have the real pixels for resolution. So, the actual resolution of the GH3 is at least half of the other ones. I'm puzzled that it is not more obvious to all GH3 owners... When I received mine, I was astonished by the incredibly low resolution, the step backward. For example, a small text that I can read with my GH2, I have to double it's size to be readable on the GH3. Personally, the EVF is mainly for manual focusing, I care a lot less about contrast or colour. On GH2, pixels were almost indistinguishable. On GH3, I see them clearly, could almost count them! It looks to me like the EVF of my 2009 Sony camcorder... So, with my GH3, I consider almost impossible to make a accurate manual focusing, specially using wide open Voigtlander lenses. I'm really disappointed. One more thing: don't be fooled by the menus font rendering (better on GH3), this is completely independent from screen resolution.

Thanks for that. And a damn, damn shame...And I think I actually made a mistake in reading this thread as it relates specifically to the EVF, not the OLED flip out screen. How does that compare to the GH2's LCD? Is it at least as good? Thanks again.

I have with your permission, linked out to your post from my Panasonic GH3 Group on Facebook. Future customers need to be aware of this and I may well build an Issues 'Gripe List' on that group. The link , with permission of the thread MOD is...... Here...

The GH3 OLED LCD is vastly superior to the low rez GH2 screen in my experience.

That is a disappointment. Due to old age, I find it difficult to see the flip out screen without glasses. I rely mainly on the EVF for accurate focussing, as most of my lenses are vintage. Maybe I'll hang onto my Gh2's just a little longer.

I find nothing wrong with either viewing device on the Gh3. Now the Gh2 monitor? POS! Actually the Gh2 body as a whole is a POS! Even the HDMI out on the Gh2 is a POS! Nobody here has even mentioned the HDMI out on the Gh3. It's awesome when you plug in your monitoring. ANd when we shoot something of importance, like on a job, we usually have the external monitoring going.
You could put a tack in the EVF of Gh3 and I'd still pick the camera over the Gh2.

Or you can just add and external EVF and enjoy the wider DR of the Gh3.

Really? Did they like downgrade the GH2 from the GH1- I'm asking a real question...because the GH1 was a bit small, but it felt well built to me (and to most reviewers) The screen was fairly good as well. I'm comparing directly to 50D...built like a tank, Great screen and a D90....good build, great screen as well. The GH1 was not AS good as those cameras build wise...but respectable. Wondering why people make the GH2 sound like it came out of a cracker jack box.

You asked a real question and I gave you my real answer. When you hold the Gh3 in hand then pick up the Gh2, yes...Crackerjack comes to mind. Gh2 takes a good video, we all know that. For photography stills however, it's night and day between the Gh3 and Gh2. But we are talking the build of the camera and the Gh3 trumps the Gh2.

I think this thread should just stay on topic of the quality of the EVF, not making points of "Yeah but it's still better in a lot of other ways." People can come to that conclusion on their own, not to mention, your points are a resounding duh. This thread relates to a specific problem noted by some users. Keep the discussion on the EVF, not the workarounds, and/or your realities of using an ext. monitor anyway. It's besides the point.

But wouldn't that be just a complaining thread rather than a solution thread?

Not to be negative, but like the VF on the Canon C100, most people came into the camera knowing the EVF wasn't of pro quality and they'd need a adaptation of some sort.
I wrote recently, after shooting a couple of short pieces that I posted here, that I was surprised at how useful I found the EVF in those challenging circumstances - but that's all I had to work with.

But before the camera even arrived I was talking with Zacuto and Hoodman about an immediate solution, which neither have yet.
So I figured out a really simple and effective way to have a pro EVF before our next shoot (this past week.)
I discussed it a few threads down if you're interested.

+1

Keeping the discussion on the EVF specifically? That isn't inherently complaining. I think it's fine if people disagree that there is a problem, but since the camera is so new, it actually does help if there is a thread that confirms or denies there's a serious problem about the EVF.

It's really not that serious. First, do you have the Gh3? I have it and I don't really have an issue with the evf. Let's just say I've seen and used worse EVF's. And if I rig up the Gh3 for any serious work, I'm gonna use and external solution as I would do with any camera.

Contrary to the EVF, I find he flip screen much better on the GH3, for contrast, resolution, angle of view, and responsiveness (capacitive like an iPhone screen).

Nope, which is why I was pretty interested in this thread and issue. I see it's not that serious for you as you use ext. monitors mostly anyway. Great.

Too bad I saw this topic a bit late. I have owned the GH1, I still have the GH2 and today I got my GH3 along with the Voigtländer 17.5mm. Unfortunately I have the same problem as others with the EVF, it is almost impossible to use for me. All my lenses are manual lenses (Zeiss ZF's and Voigtländers), I really need the EVF to be sharp and accurate (I love the EVF of GH1/GH2) but the GH3 one is fuzzy and smeared. I'll have to return my GH3 tomorrow. Such a shame. Hopefully I'll get a new one that works satisfactory otherwise I'll stick with the GH2!

I must be in the minority here but I find the GH3 EVF no better or worse than the GH2 EVF. I have both (well had because I just sold my GH2) and I couldn't really tell the difference at all and have had no issue shooting with it for photos. I was out shooting with my kids and an old Kiron 28mm f2 which isn't that sharp and I still had no issue focusing.

It seems to me there is either a quality control issue or it is something that certain eyes pick up and others aren't bothered by it. Either way I use a carryspeed loupe for most video on the GH3 on the fantastically better LCD screen. Comparing it to a loupe on the GH2 is night and day. I like not seeing M&M sized pixels.
