GH2 GH3 coming soon?

I'll be quite surprised if Panasonic don't introduce a consumer m4/3 palm/camcorder at some point soon. Maybe the GH3 will be a minor upgrade or maybe it will be shooting 120fps RAW 4K ( probably unlikely ). They will definitely add something to the top of the Lumix range pretty soon, I'm sure.

A GH3 would feel rather pointless, until it's hacked. I probably won't be purchasing another DSLR when I finally get my BMCC. The GH2 will always remain one of my favorite cameras, and will be my go-to cam for everything I can't do with the BMCC.

Can you show us some examples of Real World footage where a stock bit rate was the only issue with the footage and it rendered it totally useless?

The anti-virus software companies hire hackers to make their product better.
Panasonic should hire the guys who hacked the GH2 software and make
a killer version that incorporates the GH2 and AF100 features.
A "GH3" that had better audio capabilities with "hacks" built in
could dominate the market.

Why would they do that when they can just make a GH3 that has 1080p @ 60 FPS and 720p @ 120 FPS and then let VK own the support of any other changes that we want made?

Panasonic knows that support of features is what costs money. They aren’t going to add any features that they can’t easily support.

...no but Panasonic will let the gh3 be hacked soon as well. It's a fertile testing ground that doesn't cost a peso ! I'll be tickled pink if it has 720/120p and is reasonably priced with the 12-35 kit. Other than that ...my most dreamed-of feature would be the slot for the lvf2....or a fully articulated evf ! Don't understand the slowness on that one....I mean they did articulating evf's in the HI-8 days !

Is $2300 reasonably priced for the GH3 + 35-100mm combo?

could dominate the market.

I highly doubt a m4/3rds cam will dominate any market, people will always choose s35sensor size over the m4/3rs. Dont ask me why, but it is what it is. I actually love the m4/3rds sensor. Heck I can get a nice shallow dof with a 1/3rds inch sensor if I have the space to do it. But i have gotten away from super shallow dof, and only use it sparingly to enhance my story, and this way it has so much more impact.

I Predict the kit will be about $1800 at launch, remember that the 14-140 kit was never even close the the price of full list of that lens and body separately. Even with weather sealing, they can't really raise the price of the body and hope to compete. It is already a very niche product outside of this circle. I'm waiting for the major Gh2 players to lay hands on the BlackMagic, to see if it is really the next coming. I don't really need raw, I can usually bake an image fairly close to what I want that doesn't need a lot of grading, all I care about is the final image, will the final audience see a significant difference. I think that more-so than potential Gh3 features will determine how relevant it is in the coming year. Now if we do get 60p, 720 120p, and presumably better rolling shutter that a faster chip read should provide, decent dynamic range and better low light all for under 2K, then game on, but if going to all that trouble for the video side then put on a headphone jack, and even one of those tripod locator holes that every camcorder has would be nice.

Hi, I typed in "Gh3 Photokina", and it talks about that Panasonic might introduce their new GH3.
I do not know much about this event other then it gives the manufactures a chance to show their product. Where is the best place to receive full coverage or news about this event?
And I came late to the GH2. I want to buy one, but I can wait a little bit, because it sound like this event will be around the middle of September.
Lets just say there is a GH2 at this event, how long is it before you can buy one?

I get the impression that these camera companies do not want to dominate anything these days. They know there is a limited future for image quality improvements - how much more detail than the GH2 can you get to make a new sale? More megapixels...?

They are more focused on trickling out products to keep the option of another product next year. Competition forces them to keep up. We still have to be concerned with the GH3 not being hackable. Would be a big mistake for everybody here & purchase decisions, but I am sure Panasonic has a lot more on their mind than the DVXuser crowd. They may have receieved a phone call from the video division that told them to to the brakes on for all we know. I am just waiting and seeing because we want all of these pro video features from a consumer stills camera.

Can someone tell me how long it was between when the GH2 was announced and when it became readily available? I'm thinking about purchasing one, but it's not a pressing issue. If they announce an update to the GH2 (AKA GH3) next month and it becomes available shortly thereafter, I could wait. OTOH, if it might be six months or a year before the new camera is in mass production, I'd probably get a GH2 soon.

Thanks for your insights.

I hear you but that is up in the air as well. The AF-200 will appear but who knows where the pricing will be. Canon sure left the $3,000 space. I would bet that Panasonic has some regrets sort rushing the AF-100 to market. Once again, they could have killed it but did not or decided not to. Now they need to "fix it" with better image quality in many people's eyes. It is a great tool for the money but the GH2 just took the carpet out from underneath it.

The GH2 was announced at Photokina in mid-Sept. 2010 and became available (in very small quantities) from authorized Panasonic U.S. dealers in mid-Dec. 2010. It was still very hard to buy in he U.S. for a couple of months after that. It was available in Japan in late Oct. 2010, and in a few European countries by mid-Nov. 2010. So, availability varied quite a lot depending on location. It was a similar situation with the GH1 starting in mid-2009.

It's impossible to guess how Panasonic will distribute the new "GH3". It's almost certain it will be announced at Photokina next month, but when it will become available to customers in each country is a complete unknown.

Based on past experience, Panasonic might not make the new camera available in the U.S. until after it's available elsewhere for weeks or months, but that's just a guess. These things are unpredictable, so the "GH3" might be available at your local camera store the same week it's announced, or not.

I completely disagree, if anything Panasonic has made money selling the GH2 as a video camera, because you and I know we would not be buying it for a photo camera. There is still a lot of room to improve on the photo and video side. Heck they could release a GH3 and still not have the specs that the Hack causes, so I really don't know where you're going here?

Image quality will continue to improve, people who buy an AF100 are different than a GH2. Just the insane amount of frame rates and video features alone we see in the AF100 would not make it to a GH camera ever. The only advantaged a Hacked GH2 has over an AF100 is image quality, outside of that the AF100 is a better video camera in every single aspect. Finally stop worrying about tomorrow and live for today, if we can get a GH3 with 1080p 60fps and 720 with 120fps there will be a renovation with these cameras that everyone will go crazy.

There is ALWAYS room for improvement......

I don't disagree and no worry here. My point is that reading posts here with all kinds of video centric feature requests and $2,000 bundle prices is in my view not in line with the product. If a consumer stills camera costs $2,000 is it really a consumer still camera anymore? I don't think Panasonic would cater to the video crowd in exchange for a lot of consumer still sales. Just my speculation here but still sales always seem to trounce video sales.

My point about image quality improvements was in a different direction. I think there is a short life ahead for camera sales. I compare it to Microsoft Word. It reaches a level where it does everything you need it to and the only way to improve the customer experience is to add other things. The past five years have been about reaching HD resolution from SD. Detail was driving sales. Well now that we have detail, less flashy things are the only improvements like DR to drive sales. Just my opinion that the camera makers probably want to slow down the pace of change as they will rush to the finish line for large scale 1080p camera sales. And 4k is a tough sell right now.

Yes the AF-100 is the best approach all but the image quality. But I did not buy one and went with 2 GH2 setups for the same price. I don't think I am different. I use GH2s all the way up to Varicams. In the end image quality shows up in the edit bay.

Only in the size of our wallets. If Panasonic sold a hackable AF100 at the same profit margin as the GH2, we'd all be buying that instead.

(And I bet a fairly large percentage of us would still buy it at that price even if we couldn't hack it.)

hackable Af-100 sounds great, heck I know I might be buying a new AF100 when the new version comes out. As I shoot Music Videos, Documentaries, Commercials primarily for the web while being a College student frame rates are very important to me. Depending on what I see from the next like of Canon, BMC , GH I know I will be upgrading soon. For now though I am really really liking the GH2 compared to Canon 60d and 7d that I used to work with. Not so much the form factor , but the IQ with the hack is a lot better than Canon dslr.
