GH2 GH3 Anybody planning on purchasing the GH3 based on the current leaked specs?

Interesting technique, but IF the rumors are true that multiple frame rates are available I'd prefer to review them in a 24p timeline to decide whether to change the pace of the action, camera move, or frame rate, & watch for strobing.

I shoot a lot of B-Roll off-speed, & the AF100's ability to review any of it's variable frame rates in a 24p timeline is very useful.

I bet the GH2 will write some or all of its slow motion files to a 1080p @ 30 FPS timeline.

I do use the 80% slomo on the GH2 for B-Roll, but it's subtle, & would buy a GH3 just for more 1080p options. If it's limited to a 30p timeline I'd reconsider my pre-order.

We often shoot 48 fps for B-Roll in case the editor wants to speed it up to 24, & hope there's this option, but doubt it.

For me to justify over triple the cost of the GH2, the GH3 would have to REALLY knock my socks off. I really think we're pretty much covered for this generation. Maybe I'll upgrade in 5 years.

For me, if these rumours are true I'm hoping a GH3 + 12-35mm package will be available. My biggest fear is that Panasonic might give with one hand and take away with the other. Remember the 25p situation when the GH2 was released? Hopefully not gonna happen, but I'll wait until actual camera/s announcement and shipping to make any decision.

For GH2 users the situation will be harder than for new buyers, because the GH2 already delivered so much at only a minimum investment.
I´m still looking forward to the GH3 as my new low-profile setup, but the Nikon D600 FF and a rumored new entry level Canon FF, make me hesitant.
There´s a lot going on in the HDSLR market and since IQ generally is good with all brands in the game, deciding gets harder and more far reaching.
Luxury problems I guess ;)

Canon Dslr has the awesome 3rd party support and everyone using it, which was/is still a great reason to use. Nikon and Sony are out of the loop no matter the specs. GH2 has a genius developer creating hacks for the system and a huge support of people creating profiles based on it.

So really the competition is Canon and GH camera. The GH3 with a beefier camera, battery grip and out of the factory higher Mbps + better dynamic range is an instant win. The only knock is they do not have companies like Sigma and Tokina creating their excellent lenses like they do for Canon.

I will buy the GH3 on form factor alone, but they seriously need to find a way to get Sigma and Tokina on board.

Yes and no.
You are right that Canon stole the show, but that was because out of the 2 major names in camera gear (Canon and Nikon), Nikon's video implementation was pretty bad in comparison (horrors of the early D90's rolling shutter still haunt me).
They have been getting better, but it will take a lot to get the spotlight back from Canon after such a head start. Sony has actually been getting some popularity with the Nex5 and 7 series, offering a beautiful OLED display and focus peaking. Aside from overheating, the Sonys are actually picking up some steam lately. But not even close to Canon.

The reason Panasonic got the GH2 where it is, is because they offered more value per dollar than other camera in its class. The GH1 had a hard time getting noticed, despite having sharper video than the popular Canons at the time. Mostly because Canon was so much more popular, had more lens choices and accessories, and a more documented workflow. But still Panasonic slipped in and got their name heard.

Sony could very well release an absolutely perfect DSLR for video and take the lead over Panasonic the same way. We'll have to wait and see.

That's nothing to do with Panasonic, but with the m4/3 standard. 4/3 didn't take off as much as the original backers wanted. There used to be some lenses from Sigma for 4/3, but the sales couldn't keep them interested. Now that the GH is picking up steam and the Olympus OM-D has become a respectable pro stills camera, the m4/3 mount will get more attention hopefully.

the m4/3 mount will get more attention hopefully.
That, plus the BlackMagic Cinema camera has announced an m43 version, which brings more attention to the mount and hopefully will interest manufacturers like SLR Magic and Voigtlander to ramp up even more support. SLR Magic is apparently already looking at making some anamorphics.

Am I correct, the 15th will be the expo show? And I hope there will be links to all new information and reviews here on this forum. Is there a certain place in this forum where all the new cameras will be listed? How long is it, until they put the camera in the stores, or does it all depend on certain factors.
I am like a kid waiting for Christmas to come, I am really excited to see all the details of the new cameras.

Photokina in Germany starts on Tuesday Sept 18th, but Panasonic are making an announcement on Monday Sept 17th, which I expect will be the GH3 and some gear to go with it.

Right, I forgot about that! BMC m43 sounds like a solid offering.

The specs sound real nice, but I can't help wondering how reliable that source is.

For myself, I'm definitely interested in the GH3, not only for better features/performance/user interface, but also just as a second camera. It's never a good idea to show up on a paid shoot with no backup. I've been saved by having a second camera on set more than once.

The Gh2 still had better IQ out the box than most cameras, in its price range and a little over. The hack only made " the little camera the could" , "the little BIG camera that's kicking serious ass" so Vitaly only made a wonderful product that much more appealing- to more than prosumers, and Panasonic...

On a side note, the link below is video footage from a Nikon d600. Not too shabby, if I do say so (pondering) ... What do you think?

Did someone mention Sigma... the Wife is still raving... and not in a good way... about a Sigma we bought in 2003... I think the Daughter took it and lost it... which was 'good riddance'... to assuage her rage about the quality of the Sigma, we bought the Nikon 17-35mm 2.8 lens at about 3x what the Sigma price was...

As for GH-3 vs. Black Magic... well the reason why I didn't buy the 7D, was due to all the Nikon lenses I have... so, I would not be buying a BMC until a m3/4 mount option was available... so that means if I buy a new camera it will be the GH-3 if the actual specs are anywhere close to the 'leaked' specs.

The one thing that was not clear was exactly how much more 'dynamic range' they are getting out of the sensor/processor...

The other question is there's no mention of 24p???

Hopefully the "GH3" product intro video is not an elaborate hoax. :-)

I’ll probably get a "GH3", eventually, especially for its alleged 1080p60 capability (for slo-mo in 24p & 30p timelines). My Lumix m43 electronic lenses need a new camera body (I own a GH1 & GH2). This would be in addition to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera "EF" I have on pre-order.

However, for my purposes either the “GH3″ live 1080p HDMI output must be completely clean and standard for use with an external HDMI recorder such as a BMD Hyperdeck Shuttle-2 or Atomos Ninja-2 (unlike the GH2) ...

... Or the GH3′s built-in codec must be relatively high-quality (without “too many” artifacts, far less noise, far less gradient banding artifacts, and improved dynamic range).

It’s OK with me if the live HDMI out is only 8-bit 4:2:0, but obviously 10-bit 4:2:2 would be better. 8-bit 4:2:0 can look pretty nice if it’s properly dithered (as with newer Sony & Canon cams).

And, for me, the “GH3″ must have a headphone jack (unlike the GH2).

Hopefully the “GH3″ will feature a much-improved JPEG stills engine! RAW is all well & good, but jeez, the inexpensive Fuji P&S I owned several years ago did a better job rendering JPEG stills than my GH1 or GH2.

But … I have my doubts the new “GH3″ (body only) will be readily available anytime soon in the US via reputable, authorized Panasonic dealers. In the case of both the GH1 & GH2, it was many months after their announcement that US customers could buy them through reputable, authorized US dealers.

Here’s hoping. We shall see.

Other than the JPEG issue, your desires are met. Although I think the new low pass filter will improve jpeg quality. (And no, it's not a hoax).
