GH3, 600, 6D moire?

Here's an example photo taken with an Olympus OM-D EM5 that shows the kind of imagery that is possible with the OM-D EM5 and GH3 cameras. The detail, color, and tonal range are all quite spectacular.

Good Example of What is Possible with a GH3

Beautiful stuff! He could create beautiful landscapes with a disposable camera! The 1Ds shots are amazing! The OMD stuff is quite nice too. What really surprised me is the GF1 stuff!

Thanks for that.

Yeah, I totally agree. Talent is not optional when it comes to producing a great image.

...The take away message for me is that the GH3 camera is not going to limit you in any real way when it comes to shooting still photos. ( with the exception of high resolution Nikon D800 work )

Thanks for all the feedback. I don't know much about the D5200. How does it compare to the Gh3 in terms of overall IQ and video functionality? Which would you suggest?

The D5200 is shaping up as a great little camera: good resolution and detail, no aliasing/moire, nice colors, decent DR, half-decent internal codec plus clean HDMI-422-8bit output... Downsides: the usual Nikon thing where you can't change aperture of modern lenses unless you leave liveview, and the usual lack of histogram or waveform or zebras or any exposure aids in liveview.

Here's the thread where it is being discussed (yes, that's 61 pages as of today, go back as far as you want to find samples and info):

The D7100 seems similar in terms of video, and better for stills, so it may suit you better. Still not many hands-on users, so some details are uncertain yet. Thread:

Nothing so far, but so far I've been using 1/40 sec shutter speed when shooting 24fps with my GH3, which was the fix for my GH2 when it came to motion cadence.

The Dingo, I'm really considering the GH3 but this cadence issue is bugging me. There's a thread over at Personal View: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6417/gh3-tips-and-tricks-topic#Item_9

And I saw the issue first hand when the camera first came out. Is there any chance of uploading some examples of pans shooting at different bitrates, frame rates and shutter speeds? If you are getting smooth motion cadence then I'd opt for the GH3.

It'd be mighty appreciated! :-)

@TheDingo

Anywhere that I can see some examples of smooth motion with the 1/40 SS @ 24P? I'd even be happy to see smooth motion with 29.97 @30P. Can you point me to some good examples anywhere?

Thanks

I've been meaning to do the test for you when I have some down time, which isn't going to happen for at least a week.

I am curious to see if there is a 24 fps cadence difference between the GH2 and GH3.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've edited broadcast projects that have used the 60d and 7d as B-cams. They certainly aren't exempt from moire and the image breaks down pretty quickly with any advanced CC. I've been reading that Mosaic has come out with an anti-aliasing filter for the 6D. Is this a viable solution?

The 5Dmk2 may be another pick with a Mosaic filter. I've seen some impressive tests with it. The 6D is also not water sealed. I know the Mk2 is getting old but for the price it's a reliable workhorse.

I just tested a D5200 and although the menu isn't as easy to follow as the canons it seems like a sharp image for a much better price than the GH3 from the comparison I've seen online.

I have a 60D which I have been shooting for 3 years and like better than the D5200, but it's getting old and I need someplace to go. If I had no camera right now, I would pick up a D5200 for the price is worth a shot.

Thanks! The Gh3 has so many positives in terms of video functionality that I can't rule it out. This'll hopefully clinch it for me.

Yes I did some shooting with the 60D. In many ways I preferred it to the 7D. Same image quality and it showed me the benefits of a flip out screen. I might pick up a 5200 to test in the coming week.

I still haven't found time to do a cadence test of the GH3 at 24p, but I saw this comment on Vitaliy's Personal-View website...

Quick Test to Inspect the Stutter/Cadence Problem

Yes I had a look at that thread. Unfortunately it sort of peters out without any real conclusion. Anyway, I've now got a new GH3 and have just started to play around with it. I'm curious to know what you've been using for your photo-style settings for both stills and video? For video I'm now trying Andrew's (EOSHD) recommendation of Portrait with sharpness and NR @ -5. Not sure what the best settings are for JPEGs. For the moment Standard seems to underexpose by about .25 - .5 of a stop. I mainly shoot raw but I often need to send off quick JPEGs too. Thankx.

For video I've been using Natural -5 -5 -1 -5, which produces a flat but fairly saturated look, that I then grade in my editor. Because of the more limited dynamic range of both the GH2 / GH3 cameras, you need to be able to control contrast as much as possible, which means soft lighting indoors and lots of fill light outdoors. ( unless it's an overcast day )

I haven't shot enough still photos to have an opinion on what GH3 settings I like best, but RAW format is still the best option. ( along with Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop to process what you shoot )
