GH2 GH2-X v4 "NINE" (Quantum 9b + P-frame 720p Patch for 30MB/s)

Thanks Sage.

I will try... I'm a great fan of your videos's style. Great job!!!!

Thank you

Sage- I'm rethinking my lenses to use with the GH2's. I think I'm going to go with m43's lenses now. I've downloaded your latest "NINE+m43.zip" patch above and will apply it when I order my setup. But just before I hit the order button, I'd like to know if buying a 95 mb/s card would help the m43 instability issues with m43 lenses? Or is this a camera processing issue?

Thanks

The 64gb 95 will only allow spanning for 24H Quantum v9b, and long burst times for Xv2. You will be fine with a 30MB/s, ideally the larger size (32gb).
Here is what I will do; I would love to do an optimized patch for m4/3 lenses. All I need is for someone with these lenses to test a few slight variations of the patch (four or less).

Here is a nice explanation of how these lenses work:

That's exactly what I've been doing the last few days, and it's been quite a challenge to support Lumix M4/3 lenses in all video modes, including ETC. The article you linked does a good job explaining how distortion correction works, but it neglects to mention a crucial aspect of Panasonic's lens firmware - edge sharpening. If the geometric correction filter was used alone, the processed image would look noticeably softer, particularly in the corners. To compensate, Panasonic applies a sharpening filter as well, which is what makes these lenses look so crisp.

Unfortunately, the sharpening filter also exaggerates the sensor's aliasing artifacts, the evidence of which you can actually see on the LCD. When the auto-focus system locks into sharp focus on a patterned image, you may see fine edge detail shimmer with a chrome-like effect. These are aliasing artifacts and the effect is noticeably stronger on Lumix M4/3 lenses than on non-corrected lenses.

The problem this poses for patch optimization is that sharp-edged aliasing artifacts require a significant amount of bitrate to encode. A patch that works properly with standard lenses may overload when used with a Lumix M4/3 lens, particularly at high ISO and in ETC mode. To handle these lenses safely, some patches may need to be toned down in performance.

I'd be happy to do some testing with these lenses/GH2! PM me some patches when you can and I can test them ASAP. I think I'll go down to Samy's camera here in LA and pick these lenses up today as I just saw they are offering the same pricing as BHphoto...

It's not just the glass doing it, either. The film modes have sharpening applied, along with noise reduction, in their setups. When we get film mode adjustments the tool will be elevated to deietic status.

Can you elaborate more in the "sharpening" applied by some film modes? I do not notice that... im always use Smooth.

Smooth is the worst of all the film modes when it comes to this.

PRetty simple, pick cinema or standard, shoot the same image with a ton of detail (hair is a great way to see this), then look at the two images. Aliasing is exaggerated by smooth, which also exaggerates the appearance of noise. Standard and Cinema "appear" to have less aliasing and detail, but in reality if you did a very light unsharp mask then you'd be right back at smooth.

That's one of the reasons I switched to Standard, another's the way smooth deals with shadows and mids.

SAGE - Would you be willing to redescribe your patch in the OP when it changes, just so we can follow your thinking? Loving the set-up here.

Long live Driftwood, long live 9, and, lord, this is all fun.

We've been hooked on Standard since Ralph's HDMI tests. Sounds boring... isn't. In this one case, the manufacturer got it right with the standard patch (and 5d to RGB).

For what it's worth, I also really recommend retrying Cinema at 1250 or even 2500 with Quantum V9. The grain is almost perfect.

Love the hack Sage. I had to bring down the bitrate in FSH/SH a bit because I was getting occasional write errors with my Sandisk 30MB/s 32gb card with the 14-140mm and my shrubbery of death test. No problems with 24H.

I've settled on "Standard" also by the way

Thanks!

Sure; will do

Thank you - incidentally, what was SH lowered to?

what can class10 20mbs cards handle? i got pny16gb

I think you could give the Q100 version a try - at least the low bitrate options will work.
To get up to speed, buy one of these; its the cheap 'standard' you can use anything with:

Hi Sage,

Thanks for your work for the GH2 hack and for sharing this new settings.

I've updated my firmware with this one and everything seems to be ok. Newbie on the hack process i've few questions.

Can you explain to me what is the "Nine" hack on the 720p? What are the pros (Mb/s, GOP,..)?
And how many GOP for Quantum 100?

I had previously the Aquamotion V2 (test here http://vimeo.com/34876314) but i'm going on holiday 2 weeks to film ("documentary" like) and Quantum100 seems to be made for this kind of project. And I like 720p a lot for slowmotion too.. Do you think I am right to go on your config?

(I've a transcend 16Go class10, a Scandisk Extrem 16Go, Olympus 9-18 and Voigtlander 0,95 25mm)
In order to succeed my video trip, i would be grateful if you could tell me if I do the good choice with it! I'm going to cuba and i probably won't be able to change my firmware on the way.

It'll do well.
720p is 76-51 Mb/s, 9 GOP
For the Olympus 9-18, I think you will need to use 'H' for 720p bitrate selection. The 25mm will be fine with 'SH'.
Q100 is intra (1 GOP)
You might want to invest in another Sandisk Extreme (the best)

SH went from 76000000 to 50000000 and that cured the write errors. I haven't tried ETC with it but I never shoot there anyway. I need rock solid reliability with Pany lenses for the AF and OIS for what I shoot.

Thanks again!

Try using 'H' of the original patch when you use m4/3 lenses;)
