GH2 GH2-X v3 "THIRTY" (Quantum 7 + P-frame 720p Patch for 30MB/s)

Hi all, Thanks for all the work you guys are putting in!
When using GH2 X v3, and the extreme burst on any card, SH 60 unstable 3 or 6 second burst, when the camera stops recording, what is the proceedure? Can you shoot more bursts without needing to off load the card? Is it posible to grab lots of bursts without putting the camera/card through too much suffering?

Thanks :)

First shoot today with GH2 and this hack and I'm quite impressed!

Here's a screen grab (straight out of cam)

1080 24p H, 400 iso, smooth -2 all, voigtlander 0.95 at either f2.8 or f4 with variable ND

Screen shot 2012-01-15 at 10.26.10 PM.jpg

Received a 95mb/s 64 GB Sandisk, & tested the Thirty patch on Pappas Codec Test Chart V2. 720 H failed with the 14-140mm Lumix.

Also tried it on a high key studio shot on a Canon 45 T/S with a dumb mount.. Even though the takes were relatively short, one of them failed after about two minutes, & required pulling the battery. In total I shot about 26 takes, most less than two minutes.

My GH2 was one of the first in California, & I had overwritten a modest hack with Panasonic's 1.1 firmware before installing Thirty.

Thank you for the report. So, 720 H failed with a dumb mount? Was it 50 or 60? The patch was tested with a pulse motion 'deathchart' for 38 min continuous record to 30Mb/s; this is a surprising result. I have found on occasion that shooting in another mode just before a patched 720 take can result in instability (rare).

*Was it the extreme variation?

It was 720/60 the with Extreme 60 patch.

Best,
B

PS Where would I find the pulse motion 'death chart'?

I made it, it involves the deathchart - with a half second of stillness, followed by a sudden continuous shaking motion, and then a return to stillness. This is set to loop, and has a way of shoring up any buffer instability of a codec, if left to record long enough.

Fwiw, my latest patch will involve rate control (as dubbed by Driftwood). This allows the maximum quality potential to be tapped into (extreme SH), with superior stability to H (bitrate is locked off from straying into unstable territory). Also 24L will span ('AVC Intra 75'), with Quantum 9b as 24H. ++

Sage,

How do we follow your progress, & know which version is the latest?

Best,
B

Well, I suspect the next will be the last, and best. Later today. 24L will now be functionally equivalent to AVC Intra 100. The 720p is perfected.

Am I the only one who still feels seAQuake has a slight edge still in the shadows, equal otherwise?

I think it may be down to lower encoder settings. Driftwood has went back and forth on including these; in my testing, when 50/60 bandwidth was very limited w/ X v2, I found that the lower encoder settings made a gigantic difference in macroblocking and grain structure (on a bitrate starved scene). This is why the patch today will have the lower settings.
