I think it might be worth re-mentioning Driftwood's name when these variations are posted. The guy has worked so tirelessly and I, for one, want to make sure he's being given every once of his full due. Thanks.

Can you be more descriptive with what the settings are and what they mean? What's the bitrate, is it i-frame, variable, etc.? What exactly is 720p SH = "FOUR" supposed to mean? "Continuous 80%" is that shooting at a slower speed? Or is it 80% the bitrate of 1080p H? Part of the reason everything is confusing with these hacks is that we're flying blind with what exactly each mode is doing since every hack is different, at least a little bit.

Done, he's in the 1st post (+ the 3 responsible for everything have *always been listed in every patch)

The bitrate of four varies at ~80-87. It is 4 GOP (one I frame, three p frames). Continuous 80% is 30fps 1080p in variable speed mode (slowed to 80% 24fps). Four is *a dream

Exactly - most important is 4 GOP.

Stopped recording after ~5 seconds w/ these settings on the following static shot below:

GH2 w/ "FOUR" Patch applied - 720P SH Mode
Canon FD 28mm f2.0 @ f4.0 - Shutter= 1/125th - Smooth -2 -2 -2 -2
Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 mb/s Card

Image looks awesome- but I'm not so sure it's totally stable? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I tested the "FOUR" patch with a Transcend class 10 card that is usually the equivalent of the 30 mb/sec Sandisk cards(I left my Sandisk at home). I used the 25mm F1.4 lens @ F1.4 lens in AFC mode.
GH2 w/ "FOUR" Patch applied

  1. 1080p H – Failed after 11 seconds
  2. 1080p L – Did not fail
  3. 720p H – Failed after 3 seconds
  4. 720p L – Failed after 16 seconds
  5. MJPEG HD – Man that looks fantastic. I really need to use these settings from now on. (You have convinced me to revisit MJPEG). Can’t wait for the V1.1 firmware!

It isn't totally stable - there will be the usual revision shortly. Thank you for the report +
Was it only that one time that it crashed? (Also, was the crash 'soft'; i.e. no battery removal)
My process each time is to test with death chart pulse motion to span point, and tough scenes w/ high iso. It seems my gh2/card is slightly more stable.

It is important to:
-Use Sandisk Extreme 30MB/s (I have a c10 Transcend; it is not fast enough)
-Not use Lumix lenses (m4/3 electronic) with 720p SH

It crashed repeatedly on the same scene. The crash was soft, I didn't need to remove the battery. Looking forward to v2!

I'm using a 14-140 pany lens and a 32gb Sandisk 30mb/sec

FSH and FH freeze immediately. SH would soft freeze if pushed and I even got a soft freeze in H No problems in 24H at all however.

Brought the bit rates down to FSH/SH=45000000 and FH/H=35000000 and still have to hard boot (battery removal) FSH and FH which both still freeze immediately.

SH however is now unbreakable! Super stressed with the pany electric lens OIS and AF and even ETC is rock solid. Since that's what I primarily shoot, I'm a happy camper! Thanks Sage!

Ok, its updated now. Cadence is fixed, and I think it has been stepped back into stable territory

As per your suggestion, I've updated the patch for now with *50 for H, as a m4/3 fail safe for those who need it.
*w/ a frame limit tweak

Very cool. Thanks for all the hard work, Sage (and Driftwood, Vitaly, etc.)

As I understand it, using Quantum V9b on a 64BG 95MB/s card one could record about an hour of footage. About how long could one in 720p SH and H modes?

Sage, do you know how the 720 60p H (panny lens) mode compares to the Aquamotion v2 720p? The bitrate is lower, but I realize that's not the whole story. Aqua 720 60p works fine on electronic m43 lenses.

Thank you - its around
SH: ~1:45
H: ~2:00
I don't know if H will span on the 64/95, but if it can, that's the card that would do it.

I do:

'Aquamotion' SH v2:
~55 MB/s
Peaks at 59 MB/s

'FOUR' H:
~68 MB/s
Peaks at 73 MB/s

'FOUR' SH:
~82 MB/s
Peaks at 86 MB/s

The second part of the story is I frame size. I frames need ~300k bytes. If I frames can reach this, any given bitrate will be 10x better.

For a short time:

The Chart from Hell! (download original mp4, loop it)

If a patch can record this to span point on the equipment combo... you've got a completely stable combo.

Thanks Sage!

Damn, I think it just freaking hypnotized me...

Is it moving slightly, or am I now seeing things? LOL

Indeed it is. This is the stuff of nightmares -

After Tim's experience w/ this chart, he has suggested 45 as the point of complete stability for the m4/3 version, so I have set the patches to this (note: the actual bitrate is much higher)

Sage - Having trouble with this latest update of yours (from 2/13). 720 keeps crashing on me as soon as there's any decent amount of movement in the scene. I was under the impression that this was stable on Sandisk extreme 30MB/s cards by the title of the post. I've tried recording 1080 24p first for a few seconds before switching over and still no luck. The 1080 stuff looks great though! Is there something I'm missing? Or do I just need to breakdown and buy the 95MB/s 64GB card already and be done with it? Please advise. Thank you!

The crucial bit - is 720p bitrate set to SH, or H? And are you using an electronic lens (which)?
If you are using an electronic lens, H is the setting for that - and according to Tim is rock solid with his 14-140 (he has tried to get it to crash in many ways).
& you definitely don't need the 64/95 for Four
