GH2 with Olympus Zuiko 14-35 : Autofocus problem

Hi guys.
Sorry if this is a bit personal for a whole thread, but I can't find anywhere which is talking about this. I have new GH2 with 1.0 firmware, and a Zuiko 14-35 and 35-100 lens. The 35-100 lens came with 1.2 firmware, and it autofocuses correctly on GH2. The 14-35 came with 1.0 firmware, and it doesn't do autofocus (I use AFS mode.) When I press the shutter halfway it makes a quite electronic beeping and almost grinding sound and doesn't do anything except blur the picture a bit.

Then I used the GH2 with a Panasonic DMW-MA1 adapter and upgraded the firmware from 1.0 to 1.1 but the lens still does not autofocus at all.

Anybody have a similar experience? Suggestions or help?
Thanks!
-Chris

Hi Chris - I'm using the 14-35 (1.0) with a GH2 (1.0) and it focuses fine with the DMW-MA1 and AFS. The fact that your 35-100 is working okay seems to point to your 14-35 having a problem rather than any settings you might be using, etc. causing the problem. Bummer - good luck with getting it straightened out.

Thanks, I think you are right. Terrible timing for me since I am leaving for a last minute shoot in India in 48 hours.
I guess I'll just have to be like the real Proz and only use manual focus!!

I very rarely use autofocus with the 14-35 since the manual focus is quick and smooth. It's a bit more useful with the 35-100 which is fly-by-wire, and manually focusing involves more turning. I'm sure you'll do just fine manually focusing your 14-35.

Just curious, does the GH2 give you a message to switch to AFS mode if you have it in AFC? If not, it could be that your lens contacts are dirty and the lens isn't fully communicating. Might be worth cleaning your contacts in any case, if you haven't already tried that.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Do you use a follow focus on 14-35? I guess it's not a good idea to use it on GH2 without lens support.

"When I press the shutter halfway it makes a quite electronic beeping" - This seems to indicate a contact problem, as one or more of the electrical contacts between the lens, the DMW-MA1, and the GH2 are not securely connected.

I recently bought a Zuiko 35-100 lens and had a similar issue, which went away after I wiggled the lens slightly while pressing the shutter.

Please help me! I have the Panasonic GH2. I have the Zuiko 35-100 lens. I have the Panasonic Micro Thirds Adapter. I have firmware 1.0 for the camera and 1.1 for the lens, according to the menu system inside the camera. When I attach the lens, I can see an image on the viewfinder as I am turning the lens onto the adapter. When it finally clicks into place the screen goes black and says, "Please make sure the lens is attached correctly." I have been to the Olympus site and got the firmware upgrade and the camera will not take it. I have formatted, dragged the file over, taken the two pictures...... all the tricks and every time it says "Cannot find image to Play" or something like that. Why would the lens go black as soon as all the contacts are made? Do you think it is the lens? It is driving me nuts!!! Why won't the camera take the firmware? Please tell me you at least love the lens so I know this is all worth it. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance!

I love my 14-35 but the focus is super slow on gh2 with panny adapter. I don't really use AF though and iris works perfect so it's no big deal i guess.

I have been working all day with Panny and Olympus to get this resolved. The lens works fine (tested it on other Olympus cameras) the adapter works fine (same tests) I have 3 GH2 cameras so I have to know that at least one of these works well. I just can't, for the life of me, get the 1.2 firmware over to the Olympus lens. The camera just does not recognize it. I hit play and it just plays the two images I just shot, not the firmware. I am almost ready to send this all back!!! Please help if anyone knows anything. Thanks a lot.

Put the firmware in the root directory of a freshly formatted card with nothing else on it and try again. The root directory is 1st entry on the card, don't put it in a folder.

Again I bought the same Zuiko 35-100 lens recently, and went through the same "lens updating" thing. Here are the key points:

1. The 1.2 firmware lens update is for using on the Panny GH cameras only - You need to do the updating using a GH1 or GH2 camera
2. Make sure you have a full battery, or the camera will do nothing.
3. Makre sure the lens, the DMW-MA1 adapter, and the camera all have good connections via the electrical contacts

Why do you think that GH2 will update firmware of Olympus lens?
You need to find Olympus body.

Arghh yes, i overlooked that, i was assuming the FW would update the lens and the body didn't matter. Looks like you need a visit to a retail shop and update via an Olympus demo camera or a friend with one.

Hi,

I just got my Zuiko 14-35mm and it won't AF at all.

I'm using it on a GH13 with a Olympus MMF-2 adapter. After reading this thread, I also updated the firmware of the lens to 1.1.

The strange thing:
- updating the firmware was no problem, so the body recognises the lens
- when focusing manually and then switching the camera of, the fokus will automaticly be moved to infinity, so the motor seems to be ok
- when I press the shutter half way...nothing, no sound, no fokus change, absolutely nothing happens.

Is the Olympus MMF-2 any different to the Panasonic adapter?

I got the adapter as a really cheap offer from Hongkong. It looks very good/clean/... but is there more to it than the physical apperance? Is there a chip inside converting signals?

Any ideas?

None of the available non-Micro Four Thirds lenses will auto-focus on the GH1 or GF1. Many of them, including the Olympus 14-35mm f2.0 zoom, will auto-focus on the GH2 and G2, using either the Panasonic or Olympus Four Thirds adapters. For details on GH1 lens compatibility, see the following Panasonic site:

Thanks Ipowell - always on the spot :-)

I didn't knwo about that chart, thought every thing is fine with the adapter. To bad, no AF on my GH13 :-(

But the lens is... *hammer time!*

Cheers

I'm lost. Are u guys saying 14-35 needs firmware update to 1.2 to do AF on GH2? But the firmware update can be done only on Oly 43 or m43 body?
