GH3 GH2 vs GH3 - We shot a comparison VIDEO.

Just had a quick look and it's still £1200.00 here is the UK.
Your American price is the equivalent of £828.

There's something borderline illegal going on here with price fixing.

At least you can go into to a store and buy a GH3. Here in Australia... there's none to be found :(

I noticed that Germany has none also - but their pricing is more reasonable.

I'm sure you could get one from ebay for the equivalent of what we are being fleeced in the UK.

From what I've seen, the GH3 is an excellent upgrade for many features that have been added. The slight increase in DR is definitely there, it's real, however that being said, with the plethora of hacks available for the GH2 giving an incredible boost in detail in the lower range of the image, you can get the same detail in the shadows out of the GH2 to match the GH3, but it will be slightly noisier.

But i love noise/grain personally, also helps break up the banding.

Both great cams, but no need to upgrade just just yet.

It can be bought now at £1061 in Europe for delivery into the UK, here: http://www.photospecialist.co.uk/search.html?searchfield=Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 Black

Whilst the UK price is still over the odds, I'm glad it's not as severly fixed as Panasonic and its main retailers were trying initially.

that opening shot (aerial) is supurb!! Just loved he flow, and the way it reverse the shot in mid air. beautiful work!!

The gh2 is a great camera, no doubt, I have said it before, and I will say it again. If you can't make either shine, your in the wrong business.

I do like the weather sealing on the gh3, thats huge, especially for us east coasters living on the water, salt is hardcore. I'm still not seeing the increase in DR, at first I thought I did, but upon further inspection,,, i tend to think it was all in my head. Can anyone provide footage that shows the gh3 having better D.R.? Not saying it's not true, I just cant find anything that really shows it.

I may be the crazy one here, but I just like the subtle neutral colors of the GH2 better, something about it gives the illusion of more detail. However it's pretty obvious by this and even my own tests that the GH3 certainly has more DR in the shadows. I can totally see why people are excited by the GH3, however I think as a backup to my eventual BMC, the GH2 should hold up just fine.

I'm totally gonna jump on the GH3 though once prices and deals start comin' down in the next year.

These nitpicking differences in color and alleged sharpness are so minute and easy to adjust in post that it makes the point moot. Honestly, my recommendation is to sell your GH2's while you still can get a decent amount for them. You won't regret it; trust me.

The great thing about hanging on to the GH2 at this point is that there's no money to be lost. It's already hit a floor which won't recede much further. However, in not too long you'll find the GH3 for hundreds less. The smart thing to do is probably hold onto the GH2 and buy the GH3 for a reduced price in the near future.

I'm sticking with the GH2. The difference is nowhere near enough for me to part with £1000 upwards.
I'll hang tight for the BMC.

The GH2 won't get to 1080/60P at any price.

Don't really care much. 1080p/24 is THE format to shoot and deliver in - for me anyway. And I'm pretty satisfied with my After Effects slow motion clips. I just think 60% is the best speed for slow mo, which means recording at 40 fps anyway, not 60.

the low light capability is far more dramatic of a comparison than in broad daylight.

Now that is something I would care about, as I do a lot of work in dimly lit reception halls.

That thinking will Never lead you anywhere......

First and foremost as of today in the US the GH2 brand new sells for $649

The GH3 for $1298

Now for twice the price what you get is a Factory camera that is as good or better than a Hacked GH2, STANDARD.
Secondly the form factor and build of the camera is leagues and bounds better. Just having a battery that last twice as much or more is beautiful.
The nice and clear oled display is of higher resolution and better colors without the annoying shift that is in the GH2.

1080 60fps, until you use it you have no idea how amazing this is. 720p looks good on a hacked GH2, GH3 looks better though.

Overall is the GH3 image a lot better than the GH2, I would say No.... What I would say though is in lower light situations there is more detail in the shadows and the noise is also less.
I bought a GH2 and liked it, sold it and bought a GH3 and Love it. Me coming from Canon Dslr's where 7d, 5d were all $1800-$2500 brand new I felt the GH3 at $1300 brand new is an amaing offer in comparison.

Finally if and when the GH3 gets hacked be ready for everyone to sell their GH2.....

Why can people not understand that to some people it is just about the image?

When working professionally, I light everything, I have external sound, I am either plugged to the mains or always have a stack of batteries.
In those situations, how could the GH3 be any better for me?
The image produced will be damn near identical.

Well, maybe when you shoot outside on a rainy day in London? ;)
I´m the last person who is trying to persuade a GH2 owner of buying the GH3.
This test shows the footage of the two siblings will intercut easily and this should make both GH2 and 3 owners happy alike ;)

Except at twice the price for the GH3.

The design and ergonomic improvements are very nice indeed. (Except for the disappearing info display. That makes the GH3 a non-starter for me.) But it would have been sooooo much better if the image alone justified twice the price. Hell in the two serious comparisons I've seen (this one not among them), I thought the GH2 image actually looked better.

In low light, the GH3 absolutely does look better. I'm really baffled as to what people were expecting as to image quality improvements - the hacked GH2 was already fantastic and as close to true 1080P resolution as any DSLR-style camera can get. The GH3 basically removes the need for having to use a hack and improves DR and low-light capability. Plus a boatload of ergonomic and feature updates. That silly disappearing info thing will almost certainly be fixed in firmware 1.1.

What did you expect? That it would somehow magically produce a 4K image? Bottom line: you cannot currently buy a better video camera for $1300. Or even $2000, IMO.

+1

There is a reason to upgrade, GH3 is a better video camera that does not require a Hack. Also shoots 3 different type of video files. Even if you light your scene, by having a cleaner sensor it will transfer over into your footage.
Doesn't matter if you have battery packs with your GH2, GH3 stock battery last at least 3x longer removing the need for it. On that same token why did people even upgrade from GH1......

GH3 has a beautiful Oled display that matters, significantly.......

At the end of the day people are who they are, me personally GH3 is worth the price. GH3 vs Canon and Nikon dslrs shows you that.....
I suggest everyone to rent the GH3 and actually use it, then you can make a clear decision as to what benefits the GH3 has or doesn't have vs GH2. At the end they are all great cameras, myself personally though $1300 is no money as my main camera for a working professional.

I received a better feeling camera that can see better in low light, provide a cleaner image and shoot 1080 60fps....... Sold
