GH2 Third party battery from Adorama

I just purchased a GH2 with a couple lenses and accessories from Adorama. While on the phone, the guy told me that the spare third party battery (half the price of the Lumix battery) he was selling me would work fine with the camera, and it has a longer life than the stock Lumix battery. I have read countless posts from people about third party batteries not working well with the camera, but they all seemed to be from 2010 or 2011. Is the third party battery actually going to work do you think? Or should I call him back before it ships and have him swap out the third party for a spare stock Lumix battery? Thanks!!

The battery life indicator may not work properly with 3rd party batteries ( the Lumix batteries are chipped, 3rd party batteries may not have the chip ), but the battery should work fine.

NOTE: The only case that I've heard of a GH2 being "bricked" was when somebody updated the firmware of their GH2 and the 3rd party battery died before the firmware update was finished. Moral of the story is don't update firmware with 3rd party batteries.

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply, TheDingo! Do you happen to know if it will void my warranty by using the third party battery?

No idea about the warranty, but I haven't heard of any other issues with 3rd party batteries. If you are worried, then just buy the Panasonic branded ones. ( the cost difference isn't huge )

Unless something has changed recently none of the 3rd party batteries indicate charge left. I ordered a couple of Wasabi batteries for the GH2 from an amazon vendor and failed to note that they did not "communicate" with the GH2.

What happens is that these batteries "shut down" suddenly with no warning. So if you are in the middle of a "take", you will lose that "take". So if I have actors and crew assisting me on a project I owe it to them to not be taking chances of losing footage due to a "cheap" battery shutdown.

I "bit the bullet" and ordered a couple of "genuine" Lumix batteries. The Wasabi's will get turned in to the local battery store for proper recycling.
