Gh2 skew

Skew seems same, but GH2 seems a little hardier on the jello wobble from small shakes.
That's strange...I noticed that as well.

Is it me or does the GH-2 seem more contrast(y)? Or...maybe the colors are just darker....I don't know.

I believe I was using Standard on both with same settings though GH2 might have gotten bumped into Cinematic. Also ISOs were different because it's hard to match exposure on these guys cause ISO ratings are different....but I feel like the GH2 is somehow more contrasty but also with same or better dynamic range....hard to describe...you still get detail but it has that nice contrasty look.

alright, since I have both here, the 7D and the GH2 (PAL), I tried to setup a proper skew test.
I mounted the GH2 on top of the 7D and matched the frame as close as I could. Here are my settings:

7D:
Sigma 17-50 at 50mm (OIS off)
f4
shutter 500
1080p24

GH2:
Panasonic 14-140 at 38mm (OIS off)
f5.2
shutter 500
1080p24 (24MBit mode)

Both native files were used in After Effects CS4. I'll post all the files, also the .aep (CS4).

aep (just relink with the files from the link above):
After Effects file

there is a strange drift in sync when the going get tough. Did I used wrong file interpretation in AE (both 1080 @ 23,976 - that was default)??

Update -- for those of you who were wondering if the skew would be lessened in Extended Tele-Conversion mode, the answer is:

YES!

Much less skew in the ETC mode. The GH2's ETC mode cuts the skew down to 52 pixels, vs. 88 for the normal mode. A lot less. And it's hugely helpful in the 24p mode, it cuts the skew from 152 pixels down to 82, so -- not quite in half, but almost. That does mean that the 24p mode is still skewier than the 60i/30p/60p modes even when ETC mode, by the same margin (about 60% more) but in ETC mode it's really very very good.

Somebody get me a 7D and a 5D and a GH1 and an EX1 and a Red One so I can get baselines on all those, so we have some context to work with here.

That's very interesting, and thanks for the good work.

It's harder to tell for me when they're intercut like that but the GH2 and the 7D seem more or less the same.

I've come to the conclusion that all CMOS cameras suck for skew, CCD for the win :P

Or hurry up with that global shutter !!!!!

Skew seems same, but GH2 seems a little hardier on the jello wobble from small shakes.

I think this might be because the GH1 is on top using a hot shoe adaptor that I couldn't get totally tight, so I was having to sort of hold both cameras as I turned the tripod, which means the more minute stuff is probably no good.

Thanks Ben and aemonk!

So, yeah, that verifies what I thought -- the GH2 looks to be about the same as the GH1 in 24p. In 60i/60p the GH2 is much better than it is in 24p, and in ETC mode it's dramatically better.

aemonk, thanks for also posting that. That verifies what I discovered when I had a GH1 and 7D -- they're pretty much exactly the same. So with the GH2 being the same as the GH1, then yeah, they're all in the same boat. Unless you use ETC on the GH2, in which case you'll have deeper DOF but much less skew.

That was awesome. Thanks again!

There are so many advantages being discovered in ETC mode, that I think we'll be seeing some more experiments with S16mm lenses and this camera soon... :)

yes, a little less skew in ETC mode:
