GH2: Royal Caribbean "Oasis of the Seas"

If you are referring to[. But even with the GH2, I find the HD video quality marginal]i was quoting someone else i agree with you 100% i could be writing your words.

No worries Chris. We know your meaning. Thank you again for the encouragement.

Wasn't you. I was basically talking from a lot of talk regarding the Panasonic lenses.

Not to say the GH2 isn't a spectacular bargain for the money, especially hacked. I'll probably wind up buying one myself. I like the camera and the format.
The quality of the above video is very good for composition, exposure and grading. I would not call it sharp, or particularly high resolution for HD when viewed on a large screen. But that could be Vimeo.

Trust me, it's vimeo. you'll see whe. Ya get one. XD

Thanks again for watching.

One thing i notice Dan is you use sun or shade outdoors,i rarely find the need to change from sun so i take it you find manualy white balancing does not give you better results like myself.Cheers Chris

Agreed. For landscapes using a polarizer, and especially blue skies and water, I prefer a warmer look than manual white balance. Usually, shade or cloud settings suffice, but a warming polarizer is my preference.

It is great looking video like this that is making me strongly considering getting a GH2. I thought that one had to use hacked firmware to get footage that looks this good. Obviously, that is not the case.

To be honest, I am just as impressed, if not more so, by your excellent camerawork in this video. Did you use a tripod, for all of these shots? They look so very rock solid steady. The pans you do in the video are very nice and smooth. However, I would think that a tripod would have been difficult to take along on a cruise. That makes me doubt that you did use one.

Did you use a tripod? If so, what model and head? Was it not awkward to haul around the ship?

Or if not, how did you manage to get such rock steady and smooth movement with your GH2 ? If you could elaborate on your camera handling technique here, I would appreciate it.

Lance,

Thank you for the encouraging comments.

I use a Gitzo GT0531 tripod, Gitzo G2180 head, and Manfrotto 560B fluid monopod for cruise projects. The combined tripod and head weight is 2.5lb, so are very portable. The monopod is used in theaters and tight spaces. The minimal weight of the GH2 has allowed me to shoot entire projects with this monopod.

I am going on my first cruise in about a month but I am hedging on whether I should bother to take a tripod or not. Obviously, a tripod comes in very handy for getting great shots, but how much of a hassle was it to carry around all the time? I guess it would depend on the tripod. Mine is a big, bulky Libec video tripod.

I carry a Gitzo GT0531 tripod & G2180 head (total weight 2.5lb) everywhere on these cruises. However, the 1.5lb Manfrotto 560 fluid monopod might be sufficient.

Good luck with your tripod selection, and have a great cruise.

The GH2 is a great camera, I got nice footage with the olympus 14-54mm lens, wonderful result without grading.
Dan, I have a uncle that lives in Scottsdale :)

Cheers,
Ulisses
