GH2 Pre-orders

I just got a update this morning from Amazon saying my GH2 will arrive on December 17th. So mpgxsvcd, looks like your info is correct.

GH2's release has been listed as December 17th in Canada since pre-orders began and they seem to now be shipping so perhaps they are about to be released in the US as well.

I read on another thread that the GH2 had arrived in Canada via Henry's in Toronto. So I called Henry's a number of hours ago and they told me that it can't be bought off their shelf just yet but confirmed they did get a shipment of GH2s in to satisfy pre-orders. The chap couldn't tell me how many that was.

Based on that info and the fact no camera shop in Vancouver has an inkling about these GH2's I just ordered one from Henry's. $1,792.44 all in including 12% HST. Free shipping in Canada. Wahoo.

As Panny delays shipments, GH2 is dead on arrival... in terms of total sales figure. Look at Canon side. Canon T2i Camera + 18-55mm IS lens + 55-250mm IS lens + Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II + case/filter set + 1TB ext HD + 4GB SD card at $908 after $400 rebate!!!! Cheaper than 7-14. Geez. No wonder the 55-250 lens and the printer are sold out. GH2 kit at $1499? Too expensive.

Way, way too early to call. Panasonic will likely sell every GH2 they can make over the course of the next year or two. For example, because of the popularity of Philip Bloom's site alone (>15M hits), his saying good things about the GH2 will, by itself, result in thousands of units selling worldwide. And that's just one example.

These sorts of manufacturing delays happen all the time in the wonderful world of electronics. Experienced manufacturers such as Panasonic know that & expect & plan for it. My guess is that the GH2 will sell just fine, and Panasonic will likely make a handsome profit off it.

And besides, comparing a T2i (a nice camera for the price) to the GH2 is really kinda silly if -- like most of us here -- your primary concern is HD video. The GH2's video quality looks to be miles better than what the T2i can do (plus the Lumix 14-140 zoom design is optimized for shooting video) -- together with all the GH2's other video-oriented features -- so it makes perfect sense that the GH2 with this lens should cost more than a T2i package. Nothing new there.

Phiip said good thing about T2i, too. After reading this forum for a few months, it seems 14-140 is not so popular among serious videographers. It might change after Panny releases "brighter" zooms... but at the cost of arms and legs? I do wanna own GH2. I just paid for B4-Nikon adapter. But Panny gotta play smarter. Lower the price. Sell more units. $899 body is ridiculously high price. Make it $699. Vitaliy said same thing. We are waiting for GH2 forever!!! Don't we deserve to get it at discounted price?

The 14-140mm is a freaking awesome lens and I would consider it a must have.

Anyway, the GH2 outguns every other camera in its price range in terms of HD video performance. It is the first real second generation HD"SLR."

Some serious videographers like the kit lens. :)

Yeah... 60D and D7000 suck against GH2's video... only if GH2 makes all modes in 24Mbps!!! Are you listening Panny? I want 24Mbps on all modes!!! Then I will pay the full retail price. This is not the time for Panny to play their own game. Just cut it out and give us a real deal.

If I may again quote Ben Bunch, "There's like five things wrong with that statement." :-)

Philip, me & many others have said many good things about the T2i. However, the GH2 appears to be "better" in almost every regard (note: "almost" does not equal "every"), especially in regard to shooting quality HD video. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for, so one expects the GH2 to cost more than a T2i, right?

The Lumix 14-140mm zoom lens has been & will continue to be a very popular lens among serious videographers, especially now that the GH2 & AF100 are hitting the market. It's one of the best lenses of its type for shooting video. However, as a f4.0-5.6 lens, the Lumix 14-140 is absolutely not appropriate for every shooting situation. You may have noticed that there are literally thousands of lenses available. One very good reason for that is because one lens can't suit every application. That's why most "serious" shooters own or rent multiple lenses. It's not any different from serious practitioners of any trade: You own or rent gear appropriate for each task, or muddle through using less-than-optimum gear to "save" money near-term. It's all good. But none of this is new to the GH2 or T2i.

Panasonic (Canon, Nikon, etc.) doesn't owe us anything -- neither features or discounts. As much as I wish DSLR manufacturers would include a headphone jack in heir cameras, so far they haven't done it. If I decide that's reason enough not to buy a cam, that's my problem. There are many many other customers for DSLRs as-is. These cams are literally selling by the boat load. Meanwhile, we can continue asking them for reasonable improvements or lower prices, but change comes relatively slowly, even in high tech, even in the internet age.

As maddening as the wait for new gear/toys can be, there's no point stressing out over it. Anyway: A few months after the new gear/toy hits, there's another announced, and another a few months after that. Same as it ever was.

Meanwhile, shoot or write a film today with what you have. Be happy. :-)

That's not quite a direct quote lol...you left out a verb (well, a 's) and changed like to about. Agree on points, +1.

$899 price justified? Sluggish sales ok? Then Sony A77 at highly competitive price? Panny shouldn't wait. Start cutting the price ASAP. Sell more units before Sony.

Umm, "sluggish sales"? What sluggish sales? First, except for Japan, the GH2 isn't actually available for sale anywhere yet. How can GH2 sales be sluggish if no one can buy it yet, except in Japan?

By all accounts GH2 pre-orders here in the US are numerous.

Every lens has it's purpose. I'll tell you right now that in low light situations, the 14-140 lens is literally crap and it's why when the lights go down, that's what my 20mm is for. Now when it comes to shooting events during the day, for me, their isn't a better lens. I can go from 14mm to 140mm very quickly without ever needing to change lenses and if their are a lot of people around me, it would especially be unwise to change lenses. Never mind the fact that I may miss a very important shot in the process or risk having dust getting on the sensor.

It's a very popular lens and notice how the value haven't gone down much since it was released. If the lens doesn't work for 1 person doesn't mean it wont work for others. Everybody has their own requirements. Telling people the lens is no good no matter what the person's shooting conditions are, is wrong in my opinion. Again, not everybody's needs are the same.

Now speaking of price, the GH2 is an absolute bargain for what it can do. I mean it has infinite times more features than a VG10 and costs significantly less. Also, comparing it to the 550D is absolutely not fair at all. The 550D doesn't have an articulating screen for crying out loud. It's more of a competitor to 60D and it's still cheaper.

I'm taking this with a big grain of salt, but a nice lady at Provantage said their distributor is expecting a shipment tomorrow and another next Monday. Could mesh with what others have mentioned about a small December 3rd delivery window. My Amazon order still has Dec 16th estimated.

I didn't say 14-140 sucks. I wanna get it, but It can't be the reason to get GH series. It did lose value a lot. ebay is selling new around $600. Numerous pre-orders? LoL. I read a blog about a guy who checked out camera shops in Akihabara. Only a few customers in Panny section. Let's get real. Panny isn't selling GH2 like hot cakes in Japan. Most people buy m43 cameras primarily for taking pictures. The camera is relatively expensive where other competitors are selling at cheaper price. Otherwise how do u explain the success of Sony NEX series? Panny should lower profit margin to increase the market share. Bring in more consumers. Increase the mass. But we know they are doing a terrible job.

I'm just blowing off frustration from what I've been reading around the net. It's just that I use it very often and it works very well for me and I do think people should look at every lens real hard and not get discouraged by the f number. People need to look at the complete package. To me it's like not wanting the AF100 to have auto focusing saying that it's bad and makes people lazy. Why put restrictions on how you think other people should be shooting? I'm big into auto focusing and manual focusing. They both have it's uses.

It's $763.95 at B&H. Not everybody buys their brand new electronics at EBAY but at least they have s choice. Having choices is a wonderful thing.

Anyway, I also agree the bit rate should be higher on other modes especially 720 60p!
