I have the hacked G2 with full manual control on video, my only lenses are the 14-42 and an old Pentax SMC 50mm f1.8. My friend is selling me a used GH1 for £300 and i've been saving up to get the GH2, and i was thinking getting the GH1 and get the 20mm f1.7 or wait till i can save up more for the GH2 or stick with my G2 and expand on my lenses? i've been lookin at the samyang 35mm f1.4 aswell, the only thing thats putting me off from the 20mm is the focus by wire. what should i upgrade first?
 
the 14-42 is kaka only good for b or c camera in my opinion, get the 14-140 kit lens - it's a workhorse with WAY better optical quality, sharpness and a stabilizer.. then the pancake 1.7 20mm, then start getting your crazy primes and adapters...
 
so its better to stick with G2 and upgrade the lens? i feel like the 14-140 is too slow and not too shallow for the look i wanted to get
 
14-42 is a slower lens, but right now you need it for wides and it has a bonus of being stabilized so it can be good for action shots on skateboards or in cars or even steady cam shots at 14mm will look good, plus its the best lens you have right now for taking stills. You wont get shallow depth of field with it but that is overrated anyhow.

The 50 1.8 you have is great in low light and is can cover the telephoto side of shots you need. anything higher than that and you'll want to be on a tripod. How often do you need to use anything in the 50 to 140 range... unless your shooting wildlife or celebrities or sports, and if I was shooting in that upper range I'd probably want something faster than the 14-140 kit lens

What your most in need of is something fast in the 20-25mm range , you could go Panasonic Leica DG 25mm F/1.4 or the 20mm 1.7... since your on a budget go for the 20mm . If your making short films and stuff.. that is gonna be your workhorse not the 14-140.

after that I'd probably upgrade to a GH2 before buying any more lenses... I have no idea what your using the camera for so this might be completely wrong advice. Its all about getting gear that suits the way YOU shoot .
 
its gonna be used mostly for music videos where some scenes are gonna be narrative, also a bit of short films. I was pretty much set on the 20mm but i dont know what happen that i started lookin at upgrading the body. the only thing i could see myself running into with the 20mm is the focus by wire, thats why i also had my eyes on the 35mm samyang cause on my 50mm manual lens focusing is so much easier compared to the 14-42mm
 
If you know what you are doing, the 14-42 is quite capable. Is it a Zeiss? No. Can it turn in decent images? If you know what you are doing, absolutely.
 
I think the 14-42 is worth keeping because of stabilization. In video, imho, stabilization is much more useful than the sharpness factor.

Don't actually have the stabilized Panny 14-42.... just the Olympus kit 14-42. Even shooting at 14mm, hand tremors are sometimes evident with the Olympus.

its not perfect but functional. What it lacks in using it with a follow focus you make up for it with other creative ways of using the autofocus and touch screen focus. So its not as nice as the manual focus on the 35mm Samyang won't.
The 35mm is that nice middle ground between the 20 and 50... but if it was a choice between 20 and 35 I'd take the 20 cause it just seems to strike that perfect medium that is a good range for so many shots.

I like the samyang 35mm but before I buy that, I'll be going for SLR Magic Hyperprime 12mm f1.6

i dont think the 14-42 is as bad as what people are saying it to be but will offcourse swap it with a 14-140 if i had the money. Hey Imaginate does that 360 degrees lens gear comes with that follow focus or did u make that? will that work on any follow focus or do different ffocus vary in the sizes of their teeth
