GH2 official discussion thread

Just donated, thanks for all the GH1 goodness. I have to ask - will we ever see 1080p 25fps out of the GH2? Any vaguely official word by the tester team much appreciated.

I have used magic bullet and bought the software and i think its really overrated but its easy to use, sure. But with color curves i have the same and with better results. And its more own work.

haha, is this a record? man, knowing that nobody sane would read this thread from the beginning, don't you feel that those of who have anxiously been folowing since post 1 are more special;) or loosers:) i'm not sure how to feel about it. anyhow.. do any of you guys share my optimism about a GH2 hack now that Vitaliy posted "good news" about the AF100 firmware which appears to be very hack-friendly. Surely this should be a good omen for GH2 firmware right?

not necessarily. different divisions of Panasonic, run in different ways. The GH2 is out of the consumer division and they might see the advantages of market segmentation and control differently than a pro division that has completely different model cycles and target customers. jan of the pro division is very active here, and sees how the hack made the gh1 into a king, so her advice might flow to the pro division that produces the AF10 but not the consumer division that is not active here.

In fact Jan and Barry had been strong proponents of "no hacks" for Pro division products.
Main reason here is that pro products must have some aura around them.
You need this to sold goods at very high premium to their cost to manufacture.
Hacks don't help to hold this aura.

I presume GH has more compelling reason to have hacks than AF with some mystic aura. I don't think hacked GH will hurt AF sales. It will just make their B camera better.

I'd think that it would be embarrassing to the pro division to find out that some hacker managed to get more out of their camera than they could.
And for that reason, I'd hope there was no significant reason to hack the AF.

In fact it baffles me as to why we need to hack the GH at all. Doesn't Panasonic pay people to do this stuff? Why do they gimp their own cameras with watered down firmware?

Well regardless, I'm glad we have folks like Vitality who can pick up the ball where Panasonic drops it.

Hi all.
looking to get an FD adapter for my gh2, but there are so many different ones on ebay. anything special I should be looking for, like a special build material or something?

Buy from Cieco7. A little more expensive, but beautifully made and solid as a rock. Just my advice.

Because the typical consumer will have cheap SD cards and will run into problems if they activate a video mode that wont run on their cards... they have to make their functions work for the typical user... not an indie film maker.

Is it not cheap enough and function packed enough for you? I think all this hack talk has spoiled people a little... the GH1 hack is great as the video mode was not the best.... but the GH2 is very good, the only thing that really needs changing is 25P.

So true stockfuel.
Manufacturers have to build for the lowest common denominator, plus offer seamless support for other accessories and peripherals they sell. If you want to add performance to a product you either modify it yourself at your own risk. Or you purchase a more advanced version. There are so many variables that come into play with the GH2 that Panasonic has limited certain performance or functions, it sure is a large list for most indie or pro preferences. Some of these can be modified to suit ones needs but Panasonic also needs to protect themselves against such hacks. The biggest reason manufacturers don't support mods is the possibility of mass warranty claims, which can be quite costly if the fault is undetected and caused by some mod.

How can a mod generate warrenty claims? If anything was going to be outside of warrenty, it would be a firmware hack - If that's not in the fine print I'd be stunned.

Personally, PAL/NTSC switching is much higher on the wish-list than 25p.

Batteries and AC Adapters

Batteries and AC Adapters

I've been shooting with my GH2 for about a month and was getting tired of having to rely mostly on my 7D because I only had one battery.

I checked suggested sites, some don't ship outside the U.S.A. and the one's mentioned in Canada were sold out until the end of Feb..

Where I got mine, (and they both work, tested):

http://www.lozeau.com/ for the battery, but it's pricey at $79.

The AC consists of two units I purchased from two different Ebay stores. Both stores are run by the same person.

1st part:
Panasonic DC coupler DMW-DCC8, (Seller: ace_of_bicycle2004)

2nd part:
(exact title) Panasonic Lumix AC adaptor DMW-AC8 for DMC-FZ100, (Seller: japan-world-store).

Sale date for the ebay items was Jan. 19th and I received them Jan. 28th. I was surprised.

Again all items mentioned I've tested and they work great.

I also tested out a C-mount adapter from, seller: rainbowimaging, that was $17 cad. It didn't work at first and after examination I discovered that the pin on the camera front was not being aloud to extend. I took my handy dandy Dremel and shaved out a tiny bit until it worked.

In the coming weeks I'll let you know how the items listed below purchased from Ebay turn out:
EOS adapter, Timer Remote, Wireless Remote.

Hello fellow and potential GH2 users and enthusiasts,

Just wanted to say hello. I bought my GH2 +14-144mm & pancake 20mm 1.7f yesterday. Very excited to start shooting with this puppy. I purchased it in Korea for 2100000KRW, which comes to $1937 CDN. The only downfall is, the JPN menu. So, best of luck to Vitaliy, donations to come soon.
