GH2 official discussion thread

Microphone Choices.

I'm looking for good microphone choices for my GH2. I've been looking at the Rode videomic. I also have a Sennheiser ME66 but I'll have to get a shockmount and an XLR to miniplug adapter. Any thoughts on this and recommendations on camera shockmounts. I'm wondering if the microphone will be a bit long for the camera?

Do a search here in the GH1/GH2 forum using the keyword "Sennheiser". You'll find at least several posts concerning using this very nice mic with these cameras. Cheers.

I have noticed a significant performance increase on the GH2 compared to the GH1 in 1080i video mode. Apparently, the GH2 records at 60 fps and outputs at 60i according to their website overview and camera specifications compared to GH1 recording at 24 fps and output as 60i if I read their specs correctly. Having done some personal tests for moving objects recorded at 1080i on both the standard non-modified GH1 and GH2, the GH2 is much smoother in it's output file. The GH1 shows choppy jumps of rapid moving objects no matter what shutter speed I use in 1080i mode but is very smooth in 720p. The GH2 is very smooth, comparable to 720p mode, with no identifiable choppy jumps from frame to frame. GH2 24p output has more detail but still jumpy from frame to frame for rapid moving objects in the tests I have done.

Has anyone else noticed this characteristic of the GH2 in 1080i mode?

Yes, I noticed the motion smoothness in 720P, http://www.vimeo.com/18137872 verses in 24P, http://www.vimeo.com/18138884 but I think this is to be expected. I took a very quick look at the difference between my hacked GH1 and the GH2 the afternoon it arrived, and the GH2 did have better resolution.

This is off subject, but take a look at this Sony F3 video by Philip Bloom, http://vimeo.com/18198228 I’ve spent a lifetime as a photographer, but have only been using video for a bit over a year now. It is fascinating to me to see the beauty one can create with knowledge and creativity.

I took some video of the moon with the 100-300 a few days ago and Ex Tele. I was using manual focus, but the moon kept coming in and out of focus. Maybe this is an effect of the aperture changing? I tried to find a manual shutter speed and aperture setting for EX tele, but the Ex Tele setting was always grayed out. Is there a fully manual setting where Ex tele can be used?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi folks. Just a simple question regarding photo pictures. Are they much better than the GH1? Even with the sharp 20mm and photo umbrellas the gh1 is not that great.
I'm looking into other cams for picture taking. But if the GH2 is much better than the GH1. Then this is it. GH13 video is good enough for me. Just looking into picture taking.
Thanks for any advice!

Have you noticed any difference in 1080i setting between the GH1 and GH2?

Yes, Philip Bloom does really excellent work.

I have not tried the EXT on the 100-300 but it stays in perfect focus on the 14-140 and all my other AF lenses when I set the dial to MF so I suspect you were actually in AF mode when filming the moon. Give it a try again shooting moving objects like a car or people (but not those wild & crazy dogs - LOL).

No doubt you will get several comments on this question. However, this is mostly a subjective issue and your mileage will vary on each camera you use. I believe there is some improvements in the GH2 still performance as outlined in reviews, but to be honest for my mainly family and vacation uses, the GH1 is very capable of taking excellent photos as is the GH2. Do a search and read reviews as they provide a good technical perspective on the GH2 and GH1. Based on the description in the title of this website, the primary focus here is about discussions on the various video features of cameras and not so much on still photos.

Thanks, I thought I was missing something. That's a nice discount for Panasonic employees.

The discount is only displayed to those who are signed to the Panasonic website under the EPP benefit program. However, the program is also available to company employees other than Panasonic who are registered with Panasonic as a partner in their EPP discount benefits. Many companies cooperate with each other to provide employee discounts as part of their incentive program for retention.

Anybody else notice the price increase from $630 to $675? You'd think they could throw in a power cord or something else for the extra $45...
Yes, notice that and it is a good sign that the camera continues to be in high demand. Also, notice yesterday the silver model has an estimated shipping 3-5 Bdays now and the black model is now 3-5 Bdays estimated shipping as well instead of the 7-14 B.days recently. It seems a new flow of cameras to the US is underway and demand should taper off in the next few months.

A lot depends on what is announced at the CES convention in Las Vegas Jan. 6-9. Also, the new GF2 will start arriving in a couple of weeks as well as other offerings from various Manufacturers.

I have been using a G1 for photos quite happily and the GH1 is supposed to be superiour to the G1 in some regards. I have a GH2 now.

So, if you would describe your problems with GH1 photos, maybe I can share my experience and my opinion.

I also would suspect that you must have still had AF enabled somehow. I did the same thing, shot the moon in 720p mode in extended tele on the 100-300, and the results were just fantastic.

Your moon is indeed excellent!

I’ll bet you are right. I was in a hurry because it was morning and the moon would only be visible for a few more minutes. I kept checking the setting because I could see the focus fluctuate. I previously did use AF (quickly switched to manual) here, http://www.vimeo.com/17720792 and but I don’t think the focus shifting was anywhere near as bad as when I tried the EX Tele on the moon. During one clip an airliner flew across the moon, and I hated to lose that shot.

There is a brief discussion of using the GH2 for video here, http://www.luminous-landscape.com/whatsnew/
What was interesting to me is apparently Michael’s GH2 retains the capability of expanding (magnifying) the image for manual focus by pressing the left arrow. My GH1 did this, but with the GH2, the only way I have managed to magnify the image is to touch an area on the LCD screen. Does pressing the left arrow magnifying the image on your GH2?
Thanks,
Bill

Take a look at this option from Hosa technology:
http://www.dslrnewsshooter.com/2010...g-mics-and-f-stop-academy-training-downloads/
I think it is sold as part of a kit only.
I am very happy with this mic, its size and quality. It is a perfect match for a VDSLR.

Thanks.

Johnnie

Wow...that mic is so small. I'll definitely do some research on it. I'll be doing most of my audio capturing on a Zoom H4 and may plug the Sennheiser ME66 into that. But for on camera capture, the Hosa mic looks good. It will leave lots of room for my LED light and I would be able to use a smaller accessory bracket.

Indeed on the camera it is working great. On the other hand, this mic will not work well with the Zoom H4n due to the lack of "mic sensitivity level adjustment" in the Zoom (it will sound too low).
I have replaced my Zoom to Tascam DR100 (there is a "gain control") and the mic sound good.

Thanks.

Johnnie

Does on mine. Are you sure you're in manual focus mode? :)

I really don't like the new lever/dial setup for focus mode. It's hard to set and get a sense of what you've done without either actually looking at the dial or the LCD. It was much easier with the GH1, IMO.

Okay..it's a great camera..I love it...now where are the friggin batteries?

I love my GH2 but I have to say Panasonic really dropped the ball on extra batteries and the power adapter. How are we supposed to use it for events when we are limited to the capacity of the one battery that is provided with the camera?
