GH2 official discussion thread

I do not answer newly registered members, other members also won't provide instructions. As we don't want data in Panasonic hands.
Although the reply is understandable in terms of many efforts to provide members enhancements, none the less it is a bit offensive to those of us who have not earned the "privelege" to ask reasonable questions. If it is undesireable to have relatively new members participate in this portion of the forum maybe it would be advisable to block us from being able to ask questions or respond as I am doing here and create a "New or Junior Member" sticky to restrict access.

Hello guys, I'm just new in this site, someone referred this site to me.. Just want to ask questions.. thanks

My Panasonic GH2 has just arrived, and I'm very happy to received it since it's a gift, but my real head ache starts when I turned it on..
My GH2 is in JAPANESE Language!! oh my, can someone help me?? Is there anyways to change the language to ENGLISH?? I can't understand majority of the settings since it's Japanese.. Need your input.. Thanks

Hi John,
Maybe you will be more welcome in the DPReveiw Micro-Thirds forum as there are more folks with similar interests and willing to try and help. If you take a look around this forum, it seems quite obvious many folks here writing and responding are primarily interested in a career in video and somewhat put off by less experienced new comers unfamiliar with the culture here and how to access portions of this website. Having said this, there is probably no better forum currently available to get input on the G* Series cameras so try to use the search feature and just read the comments for now until you have been around for a while.

Some will take offense to my comments, but that is the nature of public forums even when you are a member.

It is not the point to lock new members from asking questions.
Put providing the japanes-english patch to people that could possibly be Panasonic people would give them insight into Vitaliy's work.
He simply does not want that.

Why did you buy a japanese version in the first place?
Iit is pretty well known, that the menu is japanese only in japanese GH2s.

So you can do

1) download the english handbook and compare the icons there with the incons in your japanses version so you learn what icon means what

2) sell the japanese one and buy an american one

3) wait till perhaps an official hack comes out, what nobody knows right now.

CHANGING FILE NAMES

I've been looking through my manual and can't find how to change the file names. I would like to name the files by the different events I'm shooting. Is it possible to do this in camera?

If this is so, then why did Mr. Vitaliy publicly post that he has a solution as it would seem a reasonable request for someone to learn how to make adjustments to their camera?
The posted response is not particularly Customer Friendly and implies the OP was foolish to buy the camera in the first place as I am sure many folks do when there is a new release such as the GH2 being in short supply everywhere else in the world.

Want to add quite important thing specific to GH2 (from my initial expirience).
It has much faster enlargement mode (thing that you use during MF).
GH1 had quite sluggish 30fps mode.
GH2 has 60fps, as far as I can see.
As I use MF and old lenses very frequently I find it very important.

Sorry, but I haven't quite learned to understand some of your posts, and maybe someone else can answer for you.
60FPS mode is available on both the GH1 and GH2, in 720P mode, correct??

Both the GH1 and GH2 only offer 24fps in 1080P mode, correct?

Is either sensor capable of 1080P/60??(I'm pretty sure the GH1 is NOT-as I've seen the patch, and it appears no one is interested in that resolution).

I know the TM700 offers 1080/60P. But, if the GH2 is "capable" of doing that in the future, then I will go that route.
And Vitaliy, thanks for all that you do. Your simply amazing.

My post was about enlargement mode.
Not about any video modes.
Enlargement mode uses one of the separate sensor modes.
And believe me, it is whole new expirience to be able to focus at 60fps in this mode.

Not to step on anybody toes, but I read it to mean the "REFRESH RATE" on the LCD/VF as this has changed from GH1 to GH2.

Just got my gh2 a few days ago and have been doing a lot of testing from the perspective of needing to do a lot of run and gun shooting. I find the intelligent auto is surprisingly useful except with severe backlighting or spotlighting, with focus hunting and abrupt aperture changes not a major problem in most situations. But one thing I can't figure out is what it is doing to handle very low light situations. When in manual mode if I set the ISO to the highest possible setting of 3200, and open the lens as wide as it will go and even set the exposure at 1/30th (which I know is a no no because of smearing), I find that in a lighting situation where those maxed out settings still leave me at a stop or so under, the intelligent auto can still get the correct exposure. Does anyone know what it is doing to get that extra stop? Doesn't seem to be going to a higher ISO. I'd love to be able to get that extra stop manually...

Get a fast lens, I used the base 160 ISO when filming outside at night with my 85mm F1.4 lens @F1.4 and 1/50th sec on my first test clips.

but iso 3200 vs 160 shouldn´t compensate the lens speed (in pseotio case), not talking about quality. Anyway I read GH2 goes over ISO 3200

as soon as BH Photo gets them in stock, i'm getting a GH2 to augment my HVX200 Cinemek rig. i have two really nice Zeiss ZE series (manual focus, Nikon mount) primes: Distagon 2/28mm and Planar 1.4/50mm. if anyone has experience using either of these lenses with the GH2 i would love to hear about it. also, any suggestions on the best adaptor to use these lenses on the GH2? these MF lenses have lot of glass, they're quite heavy.

Anyway I'll try to learn the Japanese settings.. thanks anyway, I never thought that turning the Japanese LANGUAGE to English is prohibited by Panasonic, and it's only a language barrier and not related to technical settings, ( like Gh13, Gh23??) I only just want to read in English so that I can set my Gh2 well, I'm just a hobbyist ..Thanks for those members who has a good heart in sharing..

Live view instead of digital image in viewfinder?

Live view instead of digital image in viewfinder?

I had hoped to be able to use the GH2 for both stills and video,so on occasion I have only one lightweight camera to tote instead of two (still and video) heavy cameras. However I discovered that while the tracking AF of this camera was usable, photographing anything that moved was next to impossible because I was not seeing the actual subject in the viewfinder, but rather a digital image the camera had just made and was displaying in the viewfinder. Meanwhile the subject was elsewhere and not in front of the camera. It is frustrating. Does anyone know if it is possible to have the camera write the image to the card and not display it in the viewfinder, so I can continually see the actual live view? it would help immeasurably, and would be a setting most people (I think) would choose to use. If there is not such a setting (and I can’t find one), is this something Vitally can possibly do via a change in firmware?
Thanks!
Bill

You just have to drop the speed to "M" (3p/sec) or "L" (2 p/sec). (Page 74 of the manual)
Then you see the live picutre between the shots.
In S and of course in SH, not.

You might be looking for the "Auto Review" setting in the SETUP menu. Setting it to OFF yields a continuous live preview in the EVF & LCD while shooting.

Sorry, but when you shoot i the continous mode this is wrong.
Check it, Auro-Review is disabeled during continuous mode.

In S Mode, the camera displays the picture, that has been taken, in M and L it displays the live picture.
Rec menu, page 4, 3rd enty.

Hi AKED: Thanks for that. It wasn't clear to me if Bill was referring to shooting stills in normal mode or burst mode. You're correct that burst mode live preview is enabled with lower burst rates. But when burst mode is disabled, disabling Auto Review allows manual shooting with continuous live preview, w/o being interrupted by recorded review images. Cheers.

Yep, that's the way it is.

I understood that Bill was referring to the burst mode.

Anyway, now he and we all know how it works in each mode.
