GH2 official discussion thread

I know these horizontal lines from any prosumer camcorder use (EX1, Z7, NX5). I always occurs when you have the wrong shutterspeed setting that doesn´t match the light source.
With my NX5 it´s worst @ 1/25 altough I´m in a 50 hz country.
Should be no real issue

You can create smooth slow mo from 1080i, one simple way is with JES deinterlacer. This gives you a 720 downres. I used to do the same within FCP, taking 1080i to half speed and then using interpolated deinterlacing, it produced a smooth slow mo with a slight drop in sharpness. I'm not sure about going 60i to 24p for slow mo in a timeline though, somebody might have figured a good workflow.

I have dropped 60i on a 24p timeline, slowed it to 40%, and it plays back pretty smooth. really quick and easy. in Premiere cs4. Just turn off frame blending, and if I remember correctly deinterlace.

I've seen this on my gh2 (and gh1) but only under strange artificial light. I think he is just seeing sync problems with bad ballast driven light (which is why it goes away at 1/30th).

Who is selling the GH2 in America. B&H?

To the best of my knowledge, no authorized Panasonic dealers in the US have the GH2 in stock yet. For example, B&H, Adorama, J&R, Amazon.com, etc. are all either taking pre-orders or putting names on wish-lists. Chances are if your name isn't already on a waiting list it'll probably take many, many weeks to fill your order.

Some folks have purchased Japanese market GH2 cams through friends, family or the internet. GH2 cams sold in Japan have Japanese-only on-screen menus, and no warranty support outside Japan. At this point the cams' menus can't be switched to English, and there's no guarantee that will ever change. However, determined non-Japanese GH2 owners have figured out how to use these Japanese GH2 cams as-is because the menus are largely organized by icons, and the GH2 English user manual can be downloaded. YMMV.

True, but the Vimeo video caption says "....issue I was seeing during low light shooting using a new US model GH2 body.." My eyebrows definitely went up at that.

I noticed Quinn Brown has a video on his Vimeo page titled "A Day at Henrys". That's a dealer in Canada. Maybe he has one of the very few NTSC GH2 cams sold through Henrys?

I also notice Andrew Reid is his "foreign correspondent", so, with respect, consider the source. ;-)

Yep:

Henry's would never pay the manufacturer to send out a couple GH2s to develop a rabid sales buzz, would they? Naahhhh.

From the en.akihabaranews.com review:

"Also, oddly, I have been surprised to see that the GH2 is way more sensitive to the “Jello Effect” or rolling shutter “syndrome” that plagues the 5D MKII and not the GH1 for example . I am not sure how to explain this, but the GH2 seems to be as sensitive as the Canon 5D MK II when it comes to rolling shutter “artifact”..."

If this is really the case...combined with a lack of 25p for PAL world...well, I'll just stay with my GH13's for the sort of work I do (wildlife, underwater...where rolling shutter/jello is a real pain). Pity, as the clean HDMI out sounds great...

A horizontal band issue in the gh2 footage? http://vimeo.com/17281822

Its a poor syncing with the light source. Cheap industrial fluorescents will change color temperature during the refresh cycle (for example sickly green, then brownish red). Cmos sensors have rolling shutter, which reads different photosites at different times. Fast shutter speeds capture a screenshot of the color change throughout the cycle as it overlaps with the rolling shutter. You can test out all the different shutter speeds available to see how they react - the higher speeds are worse. In Ntsc, 1/60 is perfect for low light - both because it avoids this problem due to electrical refresh rate and because it eliminates the smear which reveals video motion blur. I never do 1/48 on digital, because it comes across as more blurred than with film (film captures more defined motion during blur as it burns through layers). 1/60 feels more to me like film's 1/48. Red's magic motion + fast cmos may change everything though.

The author of the video did state in the comments section of Vimeo that he "tried in natural light, exhibited the same problems." But provided no footage. As more cameras [hopefully soon] make it into the hands of more North American users I guess we'll find out more.

After looking at the video - I assumed it was same old - I have to admit the very thin/still band is not what I was expecting... I certainly hope it doesn't happen under natural light - or we've got an issue here.

*its underexposed iso 3200; phew! 1600 is as far as I was planning to go. :)

Newb here again. On page 20 of the GH2's manual, in the footnotes, it states under points *4 and *7 that the sound of the AF and Aperture operations may be recorded when using the 14-42mm lens. The 14-140mm lens does not have this footnote. Anyway, I just ordered the 14-42 kit from Amazon as it just came up again for order. I'm still getting it as is as I can't afford the $1499 14-140 solution. I guess I was assuming, wrongly, that the 14-42 lens would be as whisper quiet as the 14-140 lens outfit. Oh well, I have plenty of manual FD primes if the 14-42mm is too noisy. Time will tell.

This actually makes sense since the sensor has a higher pixel density

Taking a look at his rolling shutter example in the same review, it really strikes me a many times improved over the 5d... don't know why he likened it to that model. Its more on the t2i level.
Not perfect, but pretty good rolling s.
