GH2 official discussion thread

Roei, thanks for posting... That footage looks clean and very film like, kinda Syriana feeling......

Pappas

thanks.. if you have some tip on further improving the color and film look feel free...

it's a bit wobbly isn't it? there's no real improvement in that section.. have to be very stable... it's a shame cause i could hand-hold it for run n' gun "not to worry about shakes too much" stuff...i guess wider FOV could help a bit..

Panny's stabilized lenses do a pretty good job with controlling the shakes. Not as good as some camcorders, but still. Otherwise, with anything more telephoto than normal lens (20~25 mm) some form of stabilization is necessary (even as simple as using the viewfinder instead of LCD for framing).

The shakes are actually quite helpful in evaluating encoder performance, which is doing a pretty admirable job with all the busy details. Almost all available bandwidth is used when image is fairly stable (max video bitrate ~23.5 Mbps). Stock GH1 encoder would certainly crap out on a scene like this.

In live view and 1080/60 HDMI must be running at 60 cycles per second, it's very smooth, reminds me of the TM700 when I was using one. In cinema mode the output slows down to match the 24fps rate, it's very noticeable. And for the life of me I cannot get 720 mode to work AT ALL when an HDMI cable is plugged into the camera, the 720 options just disappear from the menu and come back again the minute you take the cable out of the camera. Even switching the HDMI out option in the camera menu to 720p doesn't do the trick

If it looks very smooth, that could be quite promising. Can you display the input information on your TV or device you're hooking it up to? it very well might be 1080p60 as opposed to 1080i60. Sounds like we might have to get a video capture device to one of you that have your GH2s

Is the HDMI output full progressive 1080 at 60fps? Or only full progressive 1080 at 24fps?

No interlaced artifacts?

I don't know, it looks progressive but very well may not be; the 1080i footage also looks very smooth when playing back in realtime on a TV. If it weren't for the compression artifacts in the footage I wouldn't be able to say I could tell a difference between the two. The cinema mode almost certainly is progressive, though I suppose it could be putting in a 60i wrapper (a la GH1) when it sends out the signal. Unfortunately I don't have a means to record the signal, I can only view it

I downloaded the mts file that was posted 32694173.mts it played, but i tried to convert it on neoscene and it wouldn't accept it. 'no known conversion for this file'. Very strange. Has anyone tried to convert it? My neoscene has never given me any problems.

The clip doesn't look bad, I wish there was a pan or two so you could see what happens to all the little buildings upon movement. It's noisy, but I have never shot at higher than ISO 400 pre hack and ISO 640 post hack. Never. I was interested in transcoding it to cf422 just to see what I could do to clean it up. What would pushing the shadows down do? What would noise reduction do etc...

This is a killer thread, for a 950 dollar camera. Thanks to all for the insight, the different points of view, and really forcing someone to think on their own after reading all this when making a decision to purchase. I like that, and I don't think that gets enough credit. If more than two people are arguing, you can't depend on one of them, especially if all of them are this qualified.

That said, it is insane how much everyone is anticipating this thing.

Cheers dvx, t

Isn't that strange that nobody has tested HDMI seriously yet, like recording the output and uploading some samples, checking what format (framerate, resolution, interlaced or not, color depth,..) you get precisely, given all the GH2 already in hands of several users? Nobody is able to tell if you can obtains 1080@24p (or better) from HDMI.. (while however, if I've followed correctly, one point for sure is that you can get icon free (clean) output.)

i might try to do it at work today via Blackmagic...
i would be happy to know of any blackmagic configuration you can tell me in advance..
about the output from the camera i'll do my best with the Japanese menu

damn... i am trying to get the HDMI output from the camera via the blackmagic and final cut, but cannot get an input signal :(
(camera outputs fine into HD monitor)
i'll be at work for at least 1-2 hours if anyone had some ideas

What compression artifacts? After recorded right? 1080i? Or 1080p24?

Maybe the HDMI output doesn't work for extracting to record?

Other people already used Blackmagic to capture. I know this for certain. This was on 0.2 firmware.
You must make yourself more familiar with used settings.

tried my best today but it didn't work :(
maybe they need to update some drivers on the Mac..
sorry

* i shot some extreme low light and night footage.. how do i just split the MTS to upload shorter clips ?
