GH2 official discussion thread

I looked at Panasonic global TV website and all of their current 1080p models claim to support "Full HD." Wikipedia article on Full HD informs us that 50/60p modes have been been part of ATSC broadcast standard since 2008. HDMI, a consumer standard for interconnection of HD-capable devices has supported 1080p60 since rev.1 (2003). I don't know the specific details involved in the problem you have been told about, but from the perspective of specifications and compliance to standards I can't see why there would be a problem.

What I have been told was, that the 28 Mbps, that the TM700 uses to produce the 1080/50p (60p) produces the problems.
I do not know it if it true, but this is what the Product Manager told me on the Photokina.

I know what you're saying -- and from our perspective, I agree with you. But it actually does cost them -- for every customer who complains about how "stuttery" the video is, they have support hassles they have to deal with. And for making the modes and supporting them, they've got programming and debugging time and on and on. And the more complex they make the camera, the less appealing it is to the entry-level/low-end customer.

I agree with your points, how Panasonic in Japan see the situation.

But, the GH2 is not an entry level camera for a low end customer.
It is the top camera in the Micro Fourthirds G series with quit a price to it.

It is not an easy photo click camera and you do have to understand some things to make good films with is, once you leave iA mode. Don't understand me wrong it is great to handle, but it is not a beginners camera.

I am not sure, if 25p would make this situation really much worse than it is now, with 1080/50i, Cinematic mode 24p, 720/50p, MJPEG 30p and all the lower resolution modes.

I can confirm this. The 1080p60 28Mbps footage from my TM700 won't play on my Panasonic DMP-BD35 player. But honestly, who cares? The TM700 is selling like hotcakes because it has such outstanding visual quality 1080p60 at 28Mbps. No one who is buying this high-end camcorder for its superb image quality cares whether or not it plays back on Panasonic TVs. The more temporal and spatial resolution, the better. The higher the bit rate, the better. The more powerful the codec, the better.

I've read a couple of users on AVSforum who have one of Panasonic's Blu-Ray players of this year saying that it'll playback the 1080 60p files. Even most PS3's with the picture enhancements enabled will play back the footage.

These are progressive TVs we're talking about so their shouldn't be any issues at all.

Hello!

Changing the subject. Its Oct 12. Anyone hear when the GH-2 will be released in Japan? I'd guess Japanese retailers would know by now if they are getting them in in the next 2 weeks?

I didn't pre-order here in the US. From past experience, when do you think after the first US models ship, the camera will be available (not back ordered). Is it like those people waiting in a long line for a blockbuster movie opening weekend, but you show up on monday and there is no line?

Yup I agree, to add 25p to the "cinema mode" is hardly gonna cause people's skulls to implode any more than having a 24p mode already will, if that's Panasonic's true argument it is WEAK!!! And they are letting down a mass of people who invested in the micro 4/3 system expecting to be able to carry on shooting in a 25p environment as we have been doing for a long time now....

It's a huge let down for many people.

Regards

AKED is right, the GH2 is NOT a beginner's camera in regards to photos, so it should NOT be treated like a beginner's camera in regards to video.

This is looking more and more like an attempt to protect the af100, if you ask me. :\

Oct 29th is suppose to be the release date in Japan. Might get one sent over to me if it reviews well

Are you saying that if you hook up your TM700 to a BD player with HDMI cable there is no output? What happens when you hook directly to a TV?

I agree... for new features.
But 25p is something they've already coded for the GH1. It should be very little (if any) work to include on the GH2.

Without a hack, Can a Japanese GH-2 be switched to english? Easily?

Just based on previous experience with buying electronic goods in Japan I think it would be highly unlikely, I don't think I've come across a Panasonic device that has had a language select before in Japan, though I'd love to be proven wrong with the GH2.

I wonder if GH2 will have a "Red" model? I love Red.

I wonder if GH2 will have a "Red" model? I love Red.

I wonder if GH2 will have a "Red" model? I love and have a GH1 Red.

Not from what I've read, only Silver and Black this time around. Red and Copper weren't really big sellers for the GH1.

A pity I like the alternative colours myself, I love the GF1 in white.

That's a bummer, i love saying I'm having a Red camera, making them think I've the "RED ONE" camera, lol
