GH2 official discussion thread

Unfortunately it is a fact that the only way, just like last time, that we get the camera we want is to hope that Vitaily can work his magic, I sure hope he can because even more than the GH1 the GH2 as it stands is crying out for the hack to happen, this is sad on many fronts but it is the reality, I hope you Vitaily can do it otherwise there will be alot of dissapointed video users.
Enough chit chat then, it's time for action. Let's fire up the donation thread again and make sure Vitaliy gets the tools he needs to make the GH2 hack a reality. Not only the GH2 body is necessary, but possibly a powerful PC or two to run decryption software, etc. I have full confidence in Vitaliy's ability to do it granted he has the right tools, so I've just sent a $50 donation a moment ago. Go Vitaliy!

If he can't get the firmware then he can't hack it. Same reason that the GH1 v1.34 stopped the hack progress.

There are ways of obtaining firmware straight from the camera that have been discussed on the development forum. None of them are as "cheap" as downloading firmware from the website, which will likely be posted after several months as well -- something tells me the 3D functionality being rushed to market will have bugs. We can wait and see (and complain ad nauseum) or we can do something, no matter how great the odds seem to be. The choice is yours. I have seen for myself which route produced results.

I am pledging $50 too!

I will do it in next few days, all Vitaliy can do is try his best, we have our GH1's anyway which thanks to him are amazing, so lets hope he can get with it, if he wants too of course?:engel017::thumbsup:

Generally v.134 does not stopped hack progress.
Just very large progress had been in development tools (as we have IDE, adapted PTool and shared IDA database now).
We just do not have developers :-)

My nearest target for GH1 is to make fully adjustable AVCHD compression (with up to 7 presets selectable using menu). But I am slow as I don't have much time and risks of replacing large routines are very high.

Sorry, I mistyped. I meant it stopped people from being able to progress as in continuing to hack new cameras.

And Svecher, I understand we could get the binaries from the camera itself but is anyone really going to pull apart their cameras to do this? Best case is that it's some boundary scan thing and we could just hook up JTAG to it. Next best is that it's some flash chip in SOIC form that stores the firmware and we could remove it, read it directly and put it back easily. Worst case is it's some BGA device and we'd need to have someone get access to a BGA station to put it back on. I have access to a couple different programmers and I could do most everything except put a BGA back onto the PCB.

Well, that's why we need everyone to chip in to obtain a donor camera that can be taken apart without a requirement to put it back together in working order.

Most probably it won't be required :-) Camera will be dead after this, of course.
But proper BGA soldering station is not very expensive now.

Thanks for donation!

In reality we don't need any PCs to run decryption process :-)
Instead we need few BGA chips related things, two bodies (one will be chip donor), and pay few good guys to dump chips for us. May be buy some flash programmer later, if all runs smooth.

Oh, yeah, because the chip has decrypted firmware already :)

Vitaliy the interest in GH2 is intensifying!

Do you want to start a new thread for GH2 hack and add the relevant donation info again, there is lots of new interest in GH2 on dpreview, I will direct them at the donation page over there too for people who maybe will donate? the camera supply-demand may be limiting up until Xmas!

I do have access to a small BGA rework station but I've only taken ICs off of PCBs, I don't have ball templates or masks to put them back on properly though.

I wonder if we could find a unit that has been dropped or something where the warranty is out and we could buy it from the owner for cheap?

Best way is to get ZS1 or ZS3 from ebay, may be even two and experiment with them first.
Later may be we could get MB from SC.

As for BGA. Yeah, they need reballing before dumping (or you can use custom socket with POGO pins).
According to my talks, reballing won't be a big problem for us.

I think anyone selling their hacked GH1s for a GH2 before seeing or trying out the cam are nuts.

quote: "43rumors: Is there something else you want to say about the Gh2?
VK: Go and buy it as soon as it’ll be available. As it is the best disastrous camera for video shooters that I know. "

I believe him ..thats why I am buying and at $899 ea
