GH2 official discussion thread

From the Panasonic website.

The Extra Tele Conversion function virtually extends the zoom range up to 2.6x, thus the max.728mm in AVCHD Cinema/FSH mode, max. 1092mm in AVCHD SH mode and Motion JPEG HD / WVGA mode and max.1344mm in Motion JPEG VGA/QVGA mode is available with the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH.

Anyone know why the new extra tele feature varies in zoom range depending on video mode?

Because it is 1:1 pixel mode.
So, in lower resolutions focal magnifier will be larger as we use smaller sensor portion.

shutter 1/100 !! why ???

I think 1/100 is the right shutter speed for 50p footage. But I´m not sure either whether it is 1/100 or not. If this had been the correct exposure settings normally there wouldn´t be any flickering in pal-land. So, I`ve ask him again if he feels certain about that...

Any idea if it was the 17mbs or 13mbs mode? Is this footage straight out of the camera untouched? Cheers.

I asked him, but he doesn´t know (regarding the mbps). Yes the footage is untouched (I downloaded it from his Vimeo profile. About the shutter of 1/100 he´s pretty sure but he wouldn´t swear...

Panasonic,

How hard is it in this day and age to give users the choices that they want? In GH1, you gave us 24p in a 60i wrapper or 25p in 50i wrapper to make our lives harder. In the GH2, you solve this problem but put only 24p into the PAL camera and downgrade perfectly good 60p and 50p to 60i and 50i. Why not let the user choose in the menu? Clearly you have already done the software development for all of these modes in this and other cameras (TM700).

So, we beg you to make available as menu choices in both NTSC and PAL cameras, the following choices:

720p24
720p25
720p30
720p50
720p60
1080p24
1080p25
1080p30
1080i50
1080i60
1080p50
1080p60

Some of us actually shoot footage on both sides of the pond, so think that all modes should be available in all cameras. It should be the choice of the user, not the marketing department. It is only software and we know you can already do this. Do you want to kill Canon, Nikon, and Sony VDSLR's or not?

Thank You,
Current and Hopefully Future Customer

Let me set probabilities that you'll get them either in v1.0 firmware or in any future update (from my POV). :-)

720p24 - 40%
720p25 - 30%
720p30 - 30%
1080p25 - 20%
1080p30 - available in variable speed mode.
1080p50 - 3%
1080p60 - 3%

As for all modes, I am with you.
Regions and interface language restrictions must be eliminated before actual release. This is important.

1/40 shutter to force 25p

1/40 shutter to force 25p

I am sorry if this has already been suggested, but I am guessing that if you shoot in 1080 50i mode and set the shutter speed below 1/50 (1/40, 1/30) the camera will be forced to record progressive frames at 25 fps (since the wrapper is interlaced it will actually be 4 fields of the same frame, forming 2 repeated frames). You will only need to drop the extra frame. 1/40 shutter will not look bad in 25p as it is close enough to the "ideal" 1/50 shutter.

great idea! thanx

So if in the 1092mm AVCHD SH mode any idea as to what sensor size coverage this would be? Would 8mm and 1/2" lenses vignette in this mode? Cheers

4/3 sensors have a diagonal of 21.6mm; 1/2" lenses have an image circle coverage of 8mm (2/3" lenses have 11mm).

Maybe I'm wrong, but with 2.6x crop mode enabled, the GH2 sensor is scaled down ("windowed") to a diagonal of 8.3mm (21.6 / 2.6), enough to be covered by any 2/3" and 1/2" lenses without vignetting.

However, while 1/2" ones will keep the original field of view, the 2/3" will get a multiplying factor of 1.38x. The same as when you mount a 2/3" lens on 1/2" camera.

virtually extends the zoom range up to 2.6x,

Hey guys can someone help clarify, on the extra tele conversion function I thought the 2.6x was fixed and not variable but the wording seems to imply that you can adjust the zoom range setting up to 2.6x.

Thanks for the clarification in advance.

I'm no expert on Panasonic cameras -- but if that sensor is actually dumping 50p to the processor -- and the camera is only able to record 50i -- I would doubt you'd be able to deinterlace that 50i back to 25p.

It would be one thing if the sensor was dumping 25p -- and the processor was interlacing those frames to 50i -- because you'd know that each pair of fields were in the same time domain.

But if the sensor is dumping 50p -- and the processor is stripping a field from each of those 50p frames in order to make 50i -- then it is entirely possible that each of the 50i fields is temporally unrelated to the fields on either side of it.

And, if that is what's happening, you would not be able to re-unify two fields back to 25p -- because no two fields would have been captured at the same time -- and be progressively coherent.

This is purely an assumption on my part. And, frankly, I can't imagine engineering a camera this way -- so it is entirely possible (if not probable) that I am incorrect.

Yes, this will be very good for using ENG and 16mm cinema lenses on the GH2. It will also give us that deep depth of field that we are missing in the other VDSLR's. LOL! ;)

It seems to depend on the video mode you are in the amount of sensor coverage when in zoom mode.

Excellent idea ! Can't wait to see someone trying that on GH2, see if it keep the full 25p frame in the 50i container. 1/40 shutter speed would be indeed quite close to 1/50 as for the look.
