GH2 official discussion thread

The Panasonic effort, having in mind everything we would like and what they can deliver on a consumer level product. Also on a scale of 1-10 where do you put the competition?

550, 6
5d, 6
Sony a55, 4
Panasonic GH2, 7 or 8 (if hackable a 9) all subject to iq of course.

Sam.

So you are saying that GH1 is similar in quality to 550d and 5d?
or is it similar to GH2?

Anyone know why the megapixels drop off so much in still mode when you dont use the 4:3 aspect ratio. I thought it used a multi aspect radtio sensor so all aspect ratios had similar megapixel size and didnt just crop a 4/3 sensor. Has this changed on the GH2?

Perhaps, but a 20% increase on 24mbps still won't make it as good as a hacked GH1.

And the situation for PAL users looks dire. Only 24p at the highest bitrate which is a huge pain to deal with. 50i is only 17mbps (if I understand correctly) and is true interlaced (not 25p in a wrapper).

So is it really the case that there's no way to get true 1080 25p out of this camera? I shoot stuff for UK broadcast so this looks like its actually worse than the original GH1 let alone the GH13. Or have I misunderstood?

if you read it properly, it says checking before/ after frames... it has b-frames! it will be better! :) it wont be the same crappy gh1 codec.. well thats until we see raw mts files... if this is possible, i would believe the nikon cameras could also have no problem with mud

To the people who have no idea regarding the compression

I have heard or read today, that the GH2 is 3D capable, when the new firmware is uploaded.
If this is true, that one can upload the firmware, chance for another hack?

AKED
Many people know who this question
and many even know the answer - and even hope that the answer is positive
Vitaly - other people on this planet, I do not know

Sure it will be better - but will the codec improvement make up for the lower bitrate (compare to a GH13)? That's particularly an issue with the 1080 50/60ii mode which is only 17mpbs. Sticking 50/60 fields of 1080 into that bitrate seems like a squeeze to me!

like i said, we really wont know for sure until we see raw footages. but if its a properly implemented codec ala avccam, hell yes.

I don't care how high the ISO goes...I just hope there is no FPN, no matter how dark things are. What we're seeing on the new sensor makes me think there won't be....ahh...wouldn't that be wonderful.

AVCHD
24H - 1920x1080 24p 24Mbps
24L - 1920x1080 24p 17Mbps

FSH - 1920x1080 60i 17Mbps (sensor output is 60p)
FH - 1920x1080 60i 13Mbps (sensor output is 60p)

SH - 1280x720 60p 17Mbps
H - 1280x720 60p 13Mbps

MJPEG all at 30fps
Quite underwhelming.
Well, a properly implemented codec with B-frames may perform quite well at those rates. However, I don't want to be in pessimistic mode today, but the following little picture (courtesy of dpreview)

leads me to believe that 1080/24p mode will be delivered in the same old 60i wrapper. So 20% of bitrate lost to junk data.

I will happily eat crow after running an MTS file shot in "cinema mode" through GH13 parser and discovering it has native 24 fps rate at 24 Mbps avg bitrate (and B-frames present).

The digital 1:1 crop is really really making it for me. If the area it's scanning works out to be the size of a 2/3rd sensor I'm in. It looks like a nice solution for a good image. If it is a good (properly optimized) codec I think it would be better than a GH13 (no offense, but properly implemented and optimized makes a difference right? otherwise its just who's got the bigger number) I'm still holding on to my GH13, as body only at 900 bucks is awesome. If the off cam files are awesome I'm down with hdmi for just monitoring.

I have a few FD's, now I just want a gang of switars and computars and all those cool little thingies. They're fantastic.

I dunno I like it. It took me a day, but the 1:1 pixel mode is it for me. Do you just zoom to 2.6? or is it a preset marker in the zoom range?

I like it. The minute I get paid I'm in.

So the dealmaking question for me is, as I live in PAL land and I want these things for making movies that look like traditional movies, I can shoot in 1080 24p native, at 1:1 zoom EDIT: with a shutter of 50 as well? If so, I'm down.

Switch back for the shallow shots (or use trusty lpowell settings), which after two years of shooting and watching movies in a different way, I find out aren't all that many.
