We just made small research using resolution chart (we'll need to use better one later) and normal and tele extender modes.
Tele extender mode look exceptionally well.
In normal mode it looks like resolution is better then on GH1 and moire is much less.
But this is initial impressions.
We need to make more tests using better resolution chart.

I think I saw something that worries me: in one of the vids posted like 40 pages before, the one of the street and two cars, there is the small mud following the first car, thing that someone pointed then. But in VLC I see compression artifacts onto the first car, the grey one, especialy on the door. And also Is the car slimed down when aproached, like some kind of jello going on?
I am too paranoid?

Good to hear some good news on the aliasing front. So OLPF is not the only solution. Even if this particular one comes at the expense of 2.6x crop. However, if one doesn't primarily shoot wide angles and with some sharp c-mount lenses results could be quite good. Please also posts results (data) after shooting the better resolution chart. Thanks

Those are problems with old versions of VLC. Make sure you have version > 1.1.x

Regarding language firmware updates for people aiming to buy Japanese gh2 cams, be very aware that the only reason we have language options on the gh1 is because of the hack. Panasonic, unlike other manufacturers, do NOT have language switching in a lot of there consumer gear. I spoke to a rep here in Japan when the GH1 came out and the response was, "we have no plans to include language switching now or in the future for this camera". Now maybe things have changed but it would be wise to make purchasing decisions with this in mind.

but how come you can't change the language through firmware updates? (i think someone here said it's possible)

well, it's all getting complicated.
btw - found new sound test !

I have been listening to this clip through my high end DAC and head phones. There is quite a bit of noise even with the Sennheiser ew100 G2 and the Shure SM57 with the Sennheiser SKP100 G2. The other microphones in this test are unusable. I own a G2 wireless set and this set introduce quite a bit of noise on its own. I always run all my recordings done with this set through a noise reduction plugin. So in other words I can not conclude on the quality of the AD converter (and the mic pre amp) in this camera based on this test. I am hoping it is good enough to be able to connect it to a Juicedlink DT454 to use XLR microphones.

It would be great if someone could do a signal to noise ratio test.
One way of doing this might be to do a recording with the lowest manual audio setting enabled without a microphone attached and then check the recordings afterwards in a sound recording software or editing software. The ratio would then be the difference between the noise floor and 0 dB.

I bought a Japanese GH1 while everyone was waiting for them summer 2009. I read enough Japanese to get around the menus, so it was no big deal, but usually, for basic things I just knew the the icon and wasn't reading anyway. Later, with the hack, I was able to change the language to English and it became no different than the US version. Eventually, we may be able to change the GH2 language, but count on using it in Japanese for awhile.

if it can only be changed by hacking, then i wouldn't count on it at all. why would they let the GH2 be hackable and provide a competition for the af-100? no way.
at least not in the near future.
but if i get used to compering the English manual against the Japanese i just might pull it off. and don't forget that when buying the japanese you get the body only and don't pay for the kit lens, which i don't need..
there's not much of a choice if i need it by the end of the year (in Israel, mind you). i might not get it in the US when it comes out. they're all ordered in advance..

Well my Japanese GH2 came in this evening and I've only had a chance to test it with the kit lens indoors. Only tried the 24p cine mode since that's the only mode that really interests me. First impressions is that it's about as good as the GH13, better (smoother) sharpening maybe gives it a bit of an edge and of course no worries about the 24p bug. The few still pics I took were wonderful, it's an excellent sensor, but it still shows that even Panasonic has a ways to go before they can get a video frame to look as good as a 1920x1080 downsampled still pic. Reduce both to 1280x720 and it gets much closer. I posted some mundane frame grabs at:

most were taken at ISO 320 around f/4.3 if I recall. Hope to take the thing out this weekend and give it a real workout. Menus get easier to work with after a while

Exactly. If you study the icons and learn the functions then there really is nothing but a tiny inconvenience if you can't read Japanese. However, I think we are all hoping that there will be a way in to the firmware for our exceptionally talent colleagues from DVXUser... and not just for language reasons. In the meantime, reading (to the best of my limited ability) the Japanese GH2 manual is keeping me busy enough.
