GH2 = No rolling shutter/jello ?

Too much hype on the GH2, I'll stick with my hacked GH1 till I see something from a solid source on the GH2.everthing nowadays is just rumors and "hearsay".

True or false? This is truly amazing news if it's true. That global shutter sounds fantastic.
Where has there been any actual news about the GH2? or, for that matter, where has Panasonic ever even said there will BE a GH2? It's obvious to assume that there will be one, of course, but the point is -- nobody who knows anything can say, and anybody who does say, by default, doesn't know anything.

Barry,

I've sent you the GH2 I've been testing for the last few weeks. Let me know when you get it, and if you're as impressed with the uncompressed HD over HDMI as I was.

Should be there tomorrow via FedEx.

EDIT: Oh, man. Did I post this in public?

Stephen, consider yourself served. You need to take NDA more seriously.

(But didn't you love those new titanium strap lug mounts? That's why I'm upgrading!!)

I repeat…

When it comes to the GH2, those who know aren't talking, and those who talk don't know anything.

Especially true given the source.

I doubt the GH2 would have a global shutter if the af-100 isn't going to have one. They wouldn't make their 'consumer' cam do better things then their 'pro' film maker cam, which is still using the GH1 sensor.

They would if the AF100 took a number of years to develop. Japanese companies won't change course on a product in the middle of design simply because they have better technology suddenly become available to them. First off, that would be like admitting defeat, which in the corporate world is like asking your investors to take all of their money out of your company. Secondly, that would completely waste the time and money you've already spent on the design cycle. Something like this would be in the millions, if not tens-of-millions of dollars range for your R&D budget for a single product. Thirdly, this is a base model. They might quickly come out with a higher end model that might have the newer sensor and/or stick the new hardware in there during the lifecycle of the product ala the GH1's from japan.

Also, who says the af100 will have a perceivable rolling shutter? Who cares what sensors and hardware are in the box if it does what you want it to do? I don't think they would put out a pro camera with rolling shutter in the video output. That's a death sentence for a professional product. There are a handful of ways to get rid of the rolling shutter artifacts that can be done NOW with sufficient hardware/software resources but still be able to utilize the same sensor.

Obviously Svart you haven't seen Panasonic's officiall video on rolling shutter that they put out with the HPX300 trying to talk it away as no big deal. I'd say the HPX300 is a pro level camera at a heft price and it rolls away like the ocean waves and roller skaters on crack.

If this video isn't the most retarded insult to any pro level video user, I don't know what is:

Plus I think a 16 year old did the voice over like they were selling these things to a text phone 'tween' market.

My favorite tip in that old (& semi-annoying) Panasonic HPX300 video is the advice to pan right-to-left (instead of left-to-right) when possible, to reduce CMOS rolling shutter skew of vertical lines. I suspect this may work in a variety of CMOS sensor cams. YMMV.

Also, in Panasonic's defense, they released a firmware update a long time ago to address the HPX300's flash band artifacts. Hopefully the "GH2" will fix this, too, even if it doesn't have a global shutter.

Panasonic has confirmed that the GH2 will have no rolling shutter effect, unless you turn it on in the camera to give you the look of shooting on a DSLR.

Other improvements include:

It will contain the new Epic sensor in a joint operation with Red. It will shoot at 8k and, with an amazing advancement in video technology, will be able to store it in a lossless codec that encodes at only 100 mbit/s.

-The multi audio port. You can plug any input into this jack. From XLR to 1/8 inch mini stereo, it can all go in this multi port and will automatically detect what the level of the signal is and conform it... or

-Absolute audio control. You can set levels, compression and monitor it all live. It even has the audio scrub feature that will allow you to reduce the volume of the background noise, while keeping the levels on your talent clear and crisp. Talent standing next to a jackhammer? No problem!

-Selectable Depth of Field control. Regardless of your expsore settings and lens selection, you simply select this option and roll the control wheel to give you your selected depth of field.

-Steven Spielburg one touch control that allows you to point the camera at a scene and by depressing the shutter button half way it will automatically identify where Steven Spielburg would set up the camera and how he'd frame the shot.

And I haven't even gone into the still photography improvements.

Can you set it to 80s Steven Spielburg, 90s Spielburg, or modern Spielburg... which is a big step down....

I don't buy that for a second. I heard from a guy in purple hat that Tester14 is already intergrating Photoshop rescale algorithm into GH2^14. Wicked!
