GH2 Lens Flares

Hey Guys,

Just a quick question, i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to avoid lens flares like the ones shown in the intersection of the image below, we do a lot of night time shooting and they are quite prevalent so i'd really like to know how to get rid of these flares, i wouldn't expect a lens hood would do much in this situation, but i may be wrong haha.

it happens with all our lenses but this particular one was shot with a Lumix 14mm prime if that helps.

Thanks guys.

If the light source is in your lens, flares happen. If you're shooting a smaller-sensor DSLR with a full-frame lens, you can get flares even if the lights are outside the image circle - since they're still in the lens.

The best you can do is avoid zooms and test a few primes to see which ones negate flare, or have a pleasing flare. A polarizer might help a bit, something to test. Play with camera angle/position, and use a matte box with flags to hood the image right down to the frame. But all of those headlights and streetlights, it's going to be hard to avoid.

The "flare" that you are seeing in your shots is actually "lens coma". Most fast lenses will display a lot of coma when shooting wide open ( like the Voightlander f/0.95 lenses and most 50mm f/1.4 lenses ), and this can be greatly reduced by closing down the lens aperture by 2 F-stops from wide open.

Some of the newer and more expensive lens designs show very little coma wide open.

i.e. Olympus 12mm f/2.0, Olympus 45mm f/1.8, Olympus 75mm f/1.8
