GH2 KiPro FAIL

The GH2 has mini HDMI out. Running that to a KiPro with a mini to regular sized HDMI shows the 1080i30 or whatever the camera is set to on the front panel screen of the KiPro but it will not record. Running HDMI to a Datavideo DAC9 to convert it to HDSDI yields the same result. It will not record over HDSDI. The camera image looks great on a monitor but it is just unrecordable. We tried it with the GH2 recording to SDHC and with it NOT in record mode. The GH2 manual says that the HDMI is for connecting to a TV. That's it. KiProMini is on order so we'll crack that open and try when we see it.

I don't have my GH2 yet so I can't say for sure, but I can mention some other incidents that might relate. I'm an editor but sometimes DIT on set and we've had problems with any AJA products being able to record any DSLR output footage, any camera, any scenario correctly. Yet, all these same scenarios through a Blackmagic converter or direct ingest have always worked just fine. Again, not sure if this even applies here to the GH2 but it does seem that AJA is missing a few settings from HDMI signal paths that the Blackmagic guys have included in their equipment.

That's odd. If the monitor can show the signal, why couldn't the recorder record it?

My GH2 is supposed to arrive Friday, and I'll give it a shot with the Nano and see what's up.

Ian-T - Thanks so much for showing me this thread. It started 2 days ago and is 12 pages long now. I would have put my post there had I known it was there.

Thanks for doing the test. Really good information. If it won't work with the kipro mini it would be interesting to try running it through the Black Magic HDMI to HDSDI converter. Appreciate you posting this!

No problem. Hopefully there is a solution to this problem.

Just tried the GH2 with the Ki Pro and I had the same issue Goetz had. Also tried running it through the Black Magic HDMI > SDI box and still the same issue....

I'll let you know how the Nano Flash works out. Cross your fingers...

I've been messing around more and I have been able to get a signal to the ki pro by turning on "processing" on the black magic box that is basically a downconverter. When I flip that switch I am able to get a standard definition, recordable, signal on the ki Pro (525i 29.97)...

The Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini originally did not provide support for the rather non-standard 1080i30 format (1080i29.97 is much more common). With the new Ki Pro Mini version 2.5 firmware, 1080i30 is now a supported format and framerate. (The full size Ki Pro has not received this update, but will soon). The update is available for free download from the AJA website. Why did the AJA Io HD work? Because 1080i30 has been supported on that product for some time.
