GH2 in stock thread

Yep.. that is how much I paid through my company as well. I also paid extra for the two day air so it better be in my hands this week :)

I can see why people were pissed with the GH1 and now the GH2. I understand it's a new camera but when you pay for something and it doesn't go out when it's supposed to then it's just frustrating. I'm hoping that B and H gets it in stock. I really appreciate their customer service and I know there's other good vendors here.... It's just frustrating as I have some work I could be applying this camera too... if the AF was in stock, I'd be getting that too.

Stay strong people....

San Jose Camera

San Jose Camera

I saw a rumor on dpreview.com on friday night that GH2 would be in stock at my local San Jose Camera shop. I got there 15 minutes before the store opened on Saturday morning and was able to pick one up. I got a black one with 14-42mm. They were having a no-sales-tax day as well, so I got it even cheaper than my original pre-order with Adorama! I'm a big fan of their store now! I've been happily playing with the camera all weekend.

Like a lot of us, I'm interested in a GH2 with the 14-140 lens...

Can anyone verify that the 14-140 shipping with the GH2 is identical to the 14-140 included with GH1 kits? (Other than the firmware)

Here's why I ask. A compelling value proposition is close out $999 GH1 kits including the aforementioned 14-140. If one were to purchase that now and enjoy it while the dust settles on GH2 availability, it would then be reasonable to subsequently also buy a GH2 for $999 or less with the mediocre 14-42 kit lens package. Then, one would own for a total of $2000: a GH2, a 14-140, plus a GH1 and a 14-42.

Effectively, if what one wants is the GH2 with a 14-140 which many of us are prepared to pay $1500 for, that GH1 with the 14-42 would have a total cost of a mere $500. Follow? In other words you'd wind up with a complete $1500 value GH2/14-140 and a bonus of the GH1/14-42 in hand now for only $500 more than what the GH2/14=140 costs plus there's the obvious benefit of having the GH1 now rather than waiting until ??? to acquire a GH2/14-140 kit.

A backup/B=cam GH1/14-42 for what will in essence turn out to be a mere $500 more than the price of the unavailable as yet GH2 kit with the 14-140 makes it a very interesting option...

All this is predicated on the 14-140 that ships in the GH1 kit being as good as the version shipping with the GH2 so... can anyone verify with certainty that the 14-140 lens included in currently shipping older GH1 kits is mechanically identical to newer shipping lenses (other than firmware being pre-updated)

It's hard to imagine that Panasonic manufactures (or has manufactured) more than one version of their 14-140mm m43 zoom lens.

I'd not be surprised if they've made subtle tweaks to it over the past year or two that they've been manufacturing it, but for all intents & purposes it's essentially the same lens.

With _any_ lens there are very slight variations from lens to lens. The 14-140mm is no different in that regard.

In any event, your question is almost impossible to answer. You'd have to ask Panasonic directly if the current lens is somehow different from the one they've been selling for many, many months. Anything else is likely to be just conjecture. (And good luck getting a definitive answer to this question directly from Panasonic.)

Thanks, Peter. Assuming the lens is at least close to identical, the next question would be whether a late production model of the GH1 is a good investment because from what I have read the later ones may be unhackable (?)
In any case it would seem that $999 for a GH1 with a 14-140 lens makes the GH1 body a pretty good value. Panasonic's offering $500 instant rebates on that combination.

Hacked or Hackable GH1 bodies can be had for in the $500s now on Ebay. The unhackable ones, no one wants and so have done less than $500, more like $400 or so. As the GH2 rolls out with the body only option of $900 list, expect those unhackable GH1s to tank even further. $999 has been the promo price often since the summer when I started watching them. I honestly expected them to be even lower by now, something in the sub $900 range in order to clear the shelves.

Just out of curiosity, to the guys who have the EPP discount, do you work for a mainstream company that gets this discount or do you work for a camera shop?

You don't have to work for a mainstream company. If you have a work email just go and enter it and see if you qualify, the chances are that you will. When I called PD and asked them if I do qualify they told me no you don't, so I just went to the PD website entered my work email I surely was qualified for almost 30% of on every Pana product. Just try it.

I was bummed too.. but Its because of not having a company work email. Maybe I should take a job at subway, get the email, sign up and then quit..... 30 percent is a nice savings... Wonder if this applies to the AF100 cause if that's the case, that's a nice chunk of change....

One GH2 For Sale On the Shelf.

One GH2 For Sale On the Shelf.

So I walk into this drug store, and while nosing around the camera department, I must have let it slip that I just happen to have one of those extemely rare GH2s. The sales dude replies, oh yeah? he had one sitting on the shelf in the back. One only. Didn't know the price. Or the kit. I mentioned I would post that info on dvx.

It's in Canada.
