GH2 in PAL land

BTW- why was the 24P thread cancelled??

it was one of the more interesting threads, with mature and informative replies..
hell, i wanted to write me down some very important stuff from there... what will i do now??
start another thread like this??

As far as I can tell, too much in the way of 'whining', and too little in the way of substance relative to correct use of frame rate, shutterspeed, etc. to give the optimum viewing 'pleasure', or desired aesthetic effect.

Several posters responded, myself included, with various chunks of information that feed into how people preceive 'motion' using a series of still images, called 'movies'...

The Original Poster did not post example clips of objectionable 'strobing', nor did they respond to suggestions that what they were seeing was due to the camera person's lack of knowledge about the effects of short shutter times, and resulting 'strobing'.... in fact as noted in various places, "Saving Private Ryan", banks on this effect, and used it to give some of the 24 fps material a more 'jarring' look by using a shutter angle of 45 and 90 degrees (aka. 1/96 or 1/192 (or perhaps rounded to 1/100 or 1/200) shutter speeds. Further over and under 'cranking' and certain shutter speeds will give varying effects of 'strobing', or 'blur' depending on the desired goal of the effect... unless the effect is just accidentally induced by ignorance...

Another possibility is that the display device, frequently a computer these days, will introduce 'wyrd' effects that are not represented in the media at all.. because computer notoriously bad at accurate playing of media... and is highly dependent on the codec, and parameters of compression used...

Here's an example of different shutter speeds for a nominal frame rate of 30 fps. The clip is short, but each 'vertical slice' has a different shutter speed, and you can see the shutter effect range from 'smear' at 1/30 to 'staccato' at 1/2000. The clip is quite short, but you can pause it to see the shutter speed effect across the range.

thanks for you trying to explain again :)

i myself am aware of those basic facts.
it's just there were tons of other subtle, precise comments on the whole subject, now lost forever. it was a really exiting thread. RIP.

As i have said elsewhere i am wrong 24P from my GH2 may not be the problem as playing clips direct to tv via hdmi does not have the stutter on moving subjects, only after render by software does the jitter apear,it does not happen after 720P or 50i renders

No 25p on the GH1 is crazy. I have just shot stuff on my hacked GH1 with my new .95 voigtlander 25m and it still blows me away how decent it looks. Just wish it had the better iso's that the GH2 has when shooting with underexposed areas.

Thank you everybody. At this point my understanding is that 24p itself not introduces worst jittering then 25p, even in pal lands. Obviously you have to handle the camera (every camera) properly.
