GH2 HDMI captured footage

I downloaded the mpg off Vimeo. I honestly can't tell a difference between the two. Perhaps you could do a test of something that really puts the codec to the test?

It's not my test, I just saw it on vimeo. Despite simple higher contrast there's a noticable color difference in the red and green on the color tablet. You'll have to compare frames directly to see it.

Wow. The HDMI signal looks a lot better in my opinion. Cleaner, sharper colors, and much nicer transitions. (Okay, I'll be honest, I'm using words like "transition" to mask my uneducated, "It shore looks purty...".)

I can see a slight difference...especially with the colors (maybe it's the deeper contrast on the intesity) and it's ever so slightly sharper. Where one would see the greatest benefit is in color correcting.

I'm glad this person posted this file to Vimeo, but I remain skeptical -- but hopeful -- until we know more.

This is apparently the only video on Vimeo from this person. I believe in "Trust, but verify." ;-)

I posted the following questions on the Vimeo page. It'll be interesting to see their answers.

=============
What codec & bitrate did you use to capture on the BM Intensity?

Was this captured _live_ from the GH2 while the cam was in live view or record mode, or was it captured from a clip played back from the GH2 SDHC card?

It would be great to see GH2 _live_ HDMI 1080p24 (24H) captured to BM Intensity, including slow & very fast camera/subject motion.

If possible, please post brief original .MTS files?

Well...in the meantime I put the compressed file into Vegas, lowered the contrast, and cranked up the saturation. What is apparent to me, even with this compressed clip...is the sharpness difference and colors. Once you get it in your NLE and start to manipulate it you will start to see a difference right away.

As nice as the AVCHD looks...when putting it side by side it looks foggy compared to the HDMI capture.

My test was much simpler. I stopped the video at the 14 second mark and them moved the video back and forth between the 14 and 16 second mark. While I'll be very happy with the GH2's AVCHD colors, it's easy to see that they look much better with the HDMI capture. It's nice to have the option between "Very Nice" and "Very, Very Nice". :-)

Dan.

Wow...its more then 'subtle' but not a 'dramatic' difference. Noticeable. This card is a little over $200. Very affordable solution.
Look forward to more test results.

Hmm ... it's been more than _23_ hours since "y.kimura" posted the alleged GH2 live HDMI capture video, and they still haven't posted any information at all about how their one-and-only video was created, etc.

If I wasn't such a trusting soul (not), I'd say I'm leaning toward calling "Fake!". After all, I'm pretty sure this video would be trivially easy to fake.

But I really hope I'm wrong about this, and I'll gladly apologize to
y.kimura if they can convince us this video is the real deal.

Standing by ...

Meanwhile, if anyone else ON THE ENTIRE FRICK'N PLANET OF >6 BILLION PEOPLE who has access to a GH2 and an HDMI capture device ... please, please, pretty please post a few seconds of fast action/high detail 1080p24 "24H" original camera .MTS & high bitrate captured files, together with some convincing BTS documentation.

I'd be most grateful. :-)

Ha ha ha - I get your frustration - it's not such a hard test. After years of doing this I have realised that this is a small niche. Few of the 6 billion people on planet earth will ever need to capture the uncompressed signal from a camera or camcorder. Most people may not even appreciate the difference. I agree that it's been quite a while since the first few cams went out and nothing has been done definitively what a month almost? If anyone in the UK has one but doesn't have a way to do this test - I have all the bells and whistles to be able to capture in almost any format that normal HDMI supports so give me a yell - I can even fix sync issues. It would take only a few minutes to do a test. I am in London.

Well if Phil Bloom wants to pick up the phone I'll happily run over there with a recorder.

Honestly, neither of those stills look that good. Both have atrocious bleed on the red chip which looks like subsampling from the Vimeo encoding, which should be absent, or at least massively reduced, on an uncompressed recording - I assume what I'm looking at there is a JPEG of a capture frame from Vimeo, which is about as useful as sticking your head in a bucket.

Why do people continue to post stuff on Vimeo like it's some sort of *&#$ing reference? Post PNG stills, for pete's sake.

agreed. Vimeo/Youtube is not a proper test no matter how well/bad it looks. it's amazing how people still talking about codec mud when watching those compressed samples.

Vimeo does allow one to download the unedited original uploaded file where one choses. We just need to ask folk to upload that. But I agree - there is a slight difference in the two but I know how dramatic the difference should be and I am not seeing it. I have just ordered a Japanese GH2 so will do some shooting next week when she arrives.

may i just warn you about this: (might be on all Japanese models)
