GH2 GH2 hacks...

So far, I've been able to find two GH2 hacks...

1. 42MB/S AVCHD hack
2. Driftwood 176mb GOP1 hack

Are these the only two hacks available right now for the GH2? I'n currently using the 42MB/S hack but I'm nervous to try the driftwood one. It soom like such a high bitrate that there has to be some drawbacks right? It is stable? Can it crash the camera? Thanks!!

i tried driftwood , and its stable.
BUT you need a LOOT of space and a very fast card.
In my 16 GB Sandisk SD card, there is only room for 8 minutes !!!
You need 64gb fast cards and they are very expensive.

Here's a question.... Can you have the patch on there and then opt to go back to the original version? I shoot a lot of longform things and getting maybe 10 minutes on one card would be like a bad dream.... going back to the old HVX days where I had 8 minutes and then had to switch....

I can see the merit for my narrative work, but not for a lot of other things I do....

No, you need to hack it back to original firmware. Chris Brandins 44M patch isn't that card hungry though, and is a massive improvement over stock, and its 24L 32M setting it has spans.

All driftwood GOP1 patches span, and are amazing... but you need space and the sandisk extreme pro 45mb/s cards
stable as can be I have shot two films on them and am starting a feature film today at 3

Great to hear that! I am considering the GH2 as suitable for a low budget feature too...

NIce... I'm considering this for a feature too. I was thinking though of getting a 2nd GH2 and having one that's hacked and one that's not....

Damn. Does it have to be the Extreme Pro? I just brought a regular 'Extreme', which tops out at 30mb/s

No, that is just some debunked rumor people keep spreading. I think it's just Sandisk trolling threads in order to get people to buy their pro cards. I have a regular extreme and it's fine. tested across the board on the "death charts." only hiccup I had was panasonic's 14-42 lens under extreme detail. otherwise, all my primes worked flawlessly.

You can save a specific patch onto a separate card. So you can actually switch the hack on the go.
My advice would be to: have some cheap 1-2G cards and put a few solid "patches" on them, then you can just pop it in and apply the patch.

It takes under five minutes, if you remember how to do it. I put the 66mb hack on my GH2 back in September, and just left it on there. Yesterday I devoted a little time to reacquainting myself with the process, because I want to check out some more patches and maybe even have a little system where I put the stock firmware on a card so I can quickly go back and forth. But, since it had been so long, I had completely forgotten how to do it. I felt like a total newb. The only difference this time was that Wine and ptool are already loaded my Mac. Suffice to say, during my time yesterday, I never got past the researching phase.

I have a question about this: I've been renaming my patches __11, __12, __13 etc. Does it even matter what we name the patch as long as version increment is checked in pTool? Can I save my .bin as __11 everytime?

I really cannot comment on the patch "increment" setting. However, I dont think you can save multiple patches onto 1 card (even with different increments set). I think the increment is more of a "registration" thing. I generically set most of my patches to #2, but I dont think it makes a difference... just as long as you set a/any number when you make the patch.
Anyhow, you probably need separate cards to apply patches... hence my suggestion about "throwaway" 1 gig SD cards. I have a few 512mb cards that work fine.

There have been posts here stating that the Extreme "PRO" has at times been LESS reliable for some reason, and that it is wise to stick with the "Standard" "Extreme".
(That does sound a bit silly doesn't it? "Standard Extreme"? Jumbo Shrimp? )

Thanks all. I did think about having both firmwares on SD cards and then being able to chose between the two. BUT, I do love to have excuses to buy new gear and a 2nd GH2 would be really awesome. I'm saving though for the SLR magic lens that I truly think will fill in the last void in my lens collection: a fast wide angle. I have used the Tokina 11-16 and it's a great lens but it's a 2.8. This will be a 1.6. Man I'm loving that and I totally appreciate this site...

I've not hacked the camera yet but I think I'll do that for Christmas. I can't wait to go to NH with this little beast of a camera and do some cool timelapses and snow blind videos. Peace to all the great DVXusers out there!
