GH2 Fanboys (& Girls) why wouldn't I buy a Canon 60D?

Bought a D7000 because APS and 4/3 are more different than you'd think as far as DoF control, lens adapters are annoying, and I rented the GH2 and found it MASSIVELY too flimsy. But the image quality ain't gettin' it done, so I'm returning it and buying the GH2.

Just gonna have to put a serious cage around it and hope the insanely expensive Novoflex lens adapters have 300x less play in them than the cheapo Fotodiox I tried the first time around.

Seriously, Panasonic, I'd pay you 2-2.5x the price for a camera twice as robust. I don't need D3-level weather sealing, but D700-level would be nice. Hell, D7000 level would be a huge improvement.

I'm still holding out with a canon (I own a 7D and have used 5D, 60D, 550D) I am also going to wait for their next full frame offering.
I have seen, and played back on my timeline a lot of GH1 and 2 material.

The reason is aesthetics with the overall image and not just purity of the signal.

I have seen how the "softness" of the 5D/7D image closely matches the "organic-ness" of film.
They match up quite well and contributes to the visceral experience.

The GH2 image is amazing for its size, very similar to the images I get from my jvc hd100/200 on stock lens, -the canons produce a better image now than my JVCs WITH a 35 adapter.
My JVC +35 adapter was more aesthetically pleasing than the pure sharpness of the image on bare lens, so I look at the end result and for me, if its purity and sharpness then its the red, alexa, cinealtas, but somehow a lot of cinematographers still find the "organic softness" and "impurity" of film as better in aesthetics so I felt that the canons, having that similar "imperfection" as my choice.
My own eyes judged the images on color rendition, edge blending characteristics, tonal fall off, luminosity, especially with translucent objects, contrasts, rendering of shadows and light areas among others.

Of course, aesthetically pleasing is subjective and is different with other artists and craftsmen.

When it comes to aesthetics, I would listen to opinions of other cinematographers more so than to engineers and techies. Its the other way when I want opinions about codecs and resolutions.

Interesting that you find the moire, aliasing, and codec artifacts organic and pure. GAAH don't hit me I'm just playing!:cheesy:\

I agree that differences between some cameras can be subjective... but I try to avoid saying things like "this just looks better to me, but it's all subjective." I find that some of my friends often repeat that to convince themselves that it's true. I have owned a 7D for a year and just bought a GH2 and honestly don't see how anyone could argue that the 7D's image looks "better" in any quantifiable way, except maybe noise.

Haha! I wont hit you jester! I love the flow of this thread, its objective and civil. ;-)

But let me be clear, I didnt mean I find the defects "pure" , but the contrary. What i meant as "pure" is the clean and sharp digital HD image in general, not just the clean image from the GH2.

The canon have too much alias! Omg! Everything has a artifucting too! Gh2 is more clean free image. 7d not realy hd.

Can you explain what you mean by this? Are you talking in theoretical terms in the sense that sensor size is not "directly" related to sensor size? Without further describing your statement, you will likely mislead a lot of people.

Well this statement is just more accurate than any other. Rather than type it all out - someone has done that already. But youre right, it can confuse the issue. These guys seem to have come to that conclusion as well.

This! I consider full frame to be a bit silly, because in order to really use those great f/1.4 lenses on FF you effectively have to stop down to get a manageable DOF, but that totally defeats the purpose of f/1.4 lenses because now you're losing light compared to f/1.4 on smaller sensors.

IMO 4/3 and APS-C are the best compromise, because the sensor is big enough to get a pretty shallow DOF at f/2.8 and a really shallow DOF at f/1.4 - while not being SO shallow you can't focus on anything and thus you can get both really shallow DOF and lots of light.

+1 my sentiments exactly

i havent tested it yet but im sure a black promist would make af100 footages look gorgeous :D soft diffusion and filmlike

Thanks for that reminder. I've been wanting to test one of theose filters out for years. I think a camera like the Panasonics are perfect for it.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm definitely getting the GH2. And I'll be doing audio set-up videos too using JuicedLink preamps, internal & 2nd system audio, and more.

So hey guys, I'm trying to sell my T2i and I'm going to attempt to buy a Gh2 and hack it, which trust me, I bought a T2i because I'm pretty afraid of hacks. But anyway, I'm very serious about filmmaking and that passion overrides any fear I have of hacking, and as it is, the T2i just is not cutting it for the style of production I face. I've managed to get great things from my T2i because I know all the rules, but at the end of the day, most of those rules contradict my shooting style and again, I just can't have that; the moire and quality loss is just too much for me to handle and have confidence in.

But I've heard the hackable version of the Gh2 is not sold in stores anymore (or possibly sold whereever has had them in stock for a long time), and how do I know if I'm getting the right version? Also, what's the major differences between a hacked Gh13 and hacked Gh2?

A few more questions I'd like to ask; I was considering upgrading to the 60d/T3i because I very much dislike the exposure metering modes of the T2i, and the two newer cameras seem to have a major upgrade in that department - how does the GH2's exposure modes fair up for on-the-go shooting? Anyway, besides that, I'm not sure there's anything else I'm worried about, I think it'll be Gh2 for me here on out, I just feel like it may be a better tool for my sometimes deep-focus shooting style.

Exactly. That's the same conclusion I've come to. So now I have the 20mm 1.7 Pancake, Hoya filters, extra GH2 batteries, AC adaptor, but.... still trying to find a GH2! Ridiculous that 4 months after release Panasonic can still not catch up with demand.

There's no GH2 hack? I've seen the term being thrown around like crazy... If there's no GH2 hack, which camera model is the one that can be hacked to get the 24P's?

Sorry bout being confused, I know nothing about the GH series. With the GH2, is the 24P mode 1920x1080 or 1440x1080? And is it truly 24P (not say a 24P file in a 60i wrapper?) I guess what's strange is all along I bought the T2i because I kept reading about GH hacks, and if it ends up that you don't have to hack the GH2, I'ma feel extremely jiffed by internet info.

True 1920x1080 24p, 24Mbps. No hack required.

Well that's a brain slapper. Someone needs to alert the folks over on the Canon thread, everyone's all like "Oh should I buy a 60D or get a hacked Gh2." - bit strange. But I'm officially ticked, like I said, I bought a T2i not horribly long ago because people swore left and right that every Panasonic model that will ever come will have to be hacked, and yet it seems the Gh2 was released forever ago - I've actually delayed my film projects over 6 months because I've been trying to get around the aliasing and quality loss of the Canon's.

Times like this I really wish I could sue people for false information, I'm not kidding, over in the Canon section it seems as though this GH2 thing is being covered up by a veil of secrecy.

not 2 sure where u got that info from....ive never seen anywhere that said gh2 was already hacked. Vitali is working on it. gh1 is hacked and its known as gh13
