GH2 EVF = DLP rainbowtastic

My eyes have been tested to have a refresh rate 10 times higher than average. Consequently, I can't watch most DLP TVs or projectors without seeing rainbows everywhere when I move my eyes across the screen. I just received my GH2 and I know that the EVF is supposed to be much better quality than the LCD. Unfortunately for me, it looks just like a DLP does, with RGB rainbows streaking across all higher contrast areas of the screen.

I have the same issue. I returned my super ultra DLP projector and got a 3 non organic panel LCD and WOW is it better, more vivid, with solid colors that POP and best of all, STABLE! and it's like a 6k resolution because it's got a red, green and blue inorganic lcd panel that is like a half a pixel off each other so the image is AMAZINGLY solid.. I dare say some blu rays look better than the film EVER did in the theaters! The Beauty & the Beast ultimate blu-ray restored remastered edition is INSANITY of beautiful hi def art in motion with colors so vivid it looks 3D even though it's 2d.

But on your evf.. yeah... it sucks.. I see the same thing. Try not to dart your eyes around.

Ugh, yeah, a disappointing discovery. I don't know, I guess it's a reason to go ahead with an AF100 as my A Cam since it has a much better LCD built-in without having to rely on using an external/modular solution. It's not in the budget yet to do all AF100s, so I still need GH2s as my B Cams ... looks like the budget for those just went up now since I'll need externals for pulling focus now.

Out of curiousity, what projector did you buy, and which one did you return?

Ralph B, it's the test where you stare into a dome and they project tiny dots at random spots on the dome at random times. Every time that you see a dot, you press a button. As the test goes on, it displays the dots for shorter and shorter lengths of time (fractions of a second). I don't remember exactly what the numbers correlate to, but the average person stops seeing the dots at 3 and I stop seeing them at 30, or vice versa, I can't remember.

I'll ask again... which projector did you return and which one did you get? I'd really like to hear your experience because I'm in the market for a projector. Thanks.

Yeah it does it to me too. Just can't move my eyes around or I see it. I didn't know it was that my eyes refreshed too fast, didn't know that was possible. Thought it was from dropping to much acid in college lol.

I returned a Marantz VP12S4 that costs the price of a car and was supposed to "not exhibit any rainbow effect" because it is supposedly 3 chip DLP but I saw rainbows up the kazmoo and even though it had an amazing picture I couldn't take it.

Oddly enough, a friend brought over an UNDER $2000 Epson 8350 and I was like "yeah RIGHT... Epson makes PRINTERS...." but I have to tell you, my jaw dropped... Rainbow gone... colors WAY better.. NO screen door.... vivid solid beautiful amazing bright punchy film like image! for like 1/7ths the price!

Now it's not one of those little things. It's massive.. like a space ship.. but I love it.

Thanks for the info. I'm not surprised that the Epson 8350 is better. I checked into the Marantz - it's a single chip DLP with a native 1280x720 chip, and not particularly bright at 700 lumens.

The Epson 8350, by contrast, has 3 1920x1080 LCD chips and 2000 lumen brightness.

Thanks again for the report, Blackout. Shopping for projectors is fraught with perils. Unlike cameras, where we can see footage shot with them, projectors you have to see in person to understand what type of picture they're putting out. And that's difficult, because they are very much a specialty item, and hardly any brick and mortar stores stock them.
