GH2/DSLRs 35mm movie equivalent

Hi All,

I have a question regarding focal length and 35mm equivalent. I often shoot commercials in 35mm film or Super 35mm film and therefore used to work with 35mm movie camera focal lengths. I intend to buy a GH2 to shoot with, but also to use as a director’s viewfinder. Everywhere on the web for DSLRs such as the GH2, the 35mm equivalent is always indicated for the lens, but I believe they’re talking about the 35mm still equivalent, not the 35mm movie camera equivalent, am I right? If so, how does one find the 35mm movie equivalent for a given lens?

Thanks in advance for your answers,

Best
Jeremy

It is very close to super 35. EDIT I posted the wrong picture. I will try to find the original!

if your primary interest is directors viewfinder/ personal projects, canon 7d or t2i would be a better fit as the sensor size/focal lengths are almost identical to what you are used. This is not a video quality argument. Many directors and cinematographers use aps-c dslrs to shoot stills on set and grade to get the look they want from the film. Will still need at least f2.8 lenses to come close to the dof you are used to on typical shoots.

eh? Most hollywood shoots are in the range of F4-F8. Using a GH1/GH2 in that range would get you close to the DOF of a 35mm frame.
