GH2 display changes when I hit record... why?

and after this people still believe that this camera is so awesome? no way... this is f****d up. sorry

Yeah, all those productions that shoot on film are crewed by a bunch of idiots! Pssh, 35mm my butt, if I can't see EXACTLY what I'm shooting then it's garbage!

well, no, actually it doesn't. It is closer to what's being recorded than the paused display is, but it absolutely doesn't match whatthe recorded footage is. I posted a clip on vimeo that shows the difference. The color saturation is the main difference.

Barry it depends on your post, if you render out the footage in a Rec. 709 ahnd a gamma bake of 1.8(flatter) (easy test is these settings in 5DtoRGB) then you get the external monitor exactly. Since 1.8 is the signal that monitors read, and output for contrast gammut :)

Can you explain this a bit further? I use avid and import rgb directly into the avid, without using 5DtoRGB. I don't get the 1.8 gamma bake you refer to.

thanks

Haha!!
A few years ago I spoke to a Panasonic representative about the HVX200 and HPX170 monitor, why it was so low rez etc. He said, you want a good monitor or a good sensor chip? Because you can't get both for this price.
The GH2 is about the same thing. You made a compromise with th XLR, so I don't see why such a fuss about the monitor. It's already pretty accurate.

so how i must set camera to see what will be recorded? like on canons. is there any chance or i should return gh2?

The Canon LCD's aren't accurate either - in my experience, the screen is at least a full stop brighter than what's actually recorded.

I didn't notice any difference with the new firmware, mine still shifts big time. I'm pretty much use to it by now. I just find it strange that my old panisonic pvdv710 dv cam, can monitor live without a shift when recording, and it's around 15 yrs old.

I would have rather the firmware address this before anything else. But oh well. there's always a new cam around the corner.

I started with canon dslrs (T2i, 7D and 60D) and moved on to the gh13/17, which has been a great experience (but not in low light). The three cameras I have now (60D and 2 GH1's) would be described as consumer cameras - semi-pro at best, and they both give a reasonable representation on their lcd's of what I'm going to see in the edit suite. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the GH2 to behave in the same way.

Re: Onboard monitoring...Nature Filmmakers: Videographers shooting nature footage, be it wildlife or landscapes, will rarely be toting a monitor around if extended stays in the field are part of the project. When setting up a camera and tripod for nature work, frequent in-the-moment setups are critical to getting more than enough footage for your given project. When tracking a very elusive and mobile bird or creature, time is of the essence. Every second lost setting up gear can be the difference between getting a few good seconds of footage vs nothing at all. Setting up an external monitor really slows down this process. Also, budgets for nature work are rarely up to those of commercial projects, so you may often be the entire crew. If you are in the field for multiple days/weeks/months, packing and carrying a monitor is a pain. Almost forgot to mention how much easier it is to follow focus, compose and set proper exposure on a randomly moving critter/bird with a viewfinder attached to the camera, vs looking at an external monitor.

Of course the Planet Earth folks and other high-end nature shoots with ample crews use external monitors, but for me and ANY project I've ever been involved in, I set white balance correctly and "mostly" ignore EVF/LCD color shifts. I've learned to expose by eye and trust the exposure I see in the EVF/LCD. I've learned to use the tools I own/rent and forget about using automatic anything (I can just imagine some of you squirming as you read this!) I've almost never in 22 years of nature filmmaking been burned by these practices. OK, maybe I messed up a few times early on, but that's how I learned!

Then again, small and lightweight LCD-type monitors now exist, so I suppose if your project demands a monitor or if you simply cannot fathom shooting without one, the answer is obvious. When shooting in the field, every electronic item brought along needs to be used, tended to and powered. Batteries and their weight/charging issues will often have you packing lighter and leaner.

I just got my GH2 a few days ago. I will never shoot video with my T2i again. This little Panasonic shoots SO much better. The detail and smoothness of motion in the image is more pleasing to my eye. Plus, the Extended Tele Converter Mode really makes my Canon 100-400 reach farther than I'd ever imagined.

I'm pretty sure I'll get skewered for suggesting not using an external monitor, so please remember to cook me medium-rare and do a spicy rub, OK?

Happy Holidays!

@ stoneinapond - yes, I've just bought one, and post is my day job. I'm just agreeing with the o/p that this kind of technical shortcoming is bs.

Owning both canon and panasonic dslr's, I know the shortcomings of both and use them as appropriate. But having a viewfinder you can trust seems pretty fundamental to me, and I can do that with my 60D and GH1's.

Is this an eos piece of glass? If so, do you mind saying what adapter you're using? Cheers!

So are we talking about the EVF or the LCD? Because I find the EVF to be relatively accurate and almost entirely devoid of color shift when recording.

That's not to say that it wouldn't be nice to have a steady LCD. Just sayin'

maybe I'm blind and I just can't see what is happening. Either that or there is variance between dfferent batches of GH2s. Can somebody upload a video of their colour shift?, I don't currently have access to my GH2 at the moment otherwise I would upload a video my own
