Good stuff! You have a lot of really cool visuals in the reel. Good camera moves, interesting subjects, I love the variety. The music wasn't for me, but I think it worked well enough.
The biggest thing that stuck out to me was the interviews. While they looked great, it was really awkward watching a talking head with no audio. I'd either: A: put the audio back in and lower the volume of the music for those sections to show you can capture good audio, or B: Remove them alltogether. They seemed to interrupt the flow of the reel.
I'd also lose the motion graphic pieces and keep the reel entirely cinematography. Again, the quality of the shots are really good, but then they're interupted by graphics that seem out of place. Keep the iphone piece, people like to see that you can do that, but lose the flying videos and motion typography piece.
Overall really good stuff. The 2 minutes didn't even seem that long, and I always recommend keeping your reel 1:30 or under. Looking forward to seeing more projects!
Thanks Erik for the feedback, appreciate it. I agree that the interviews and graphical pieces seem a little out of place. I just wanted to show the variety that I can do for clients. I might try what you said about lowering the audio levels and including the voice audio.
Thanks again.
I watched the clip in mute (as is my practice due to uncontrolled volume in many videos) but when I saw the surfer talking, I unmuted to see what he had to say, how the audio sounded... Then I was confused by the music and no talking. I thought I maybe had another clip up with music on it.
Hope this helps. Other than that, great vid.
What did you do to acheive the "walking backwards" through the field at around 0:39? Was that a merlin shot or other various steady cams? Twas nice and smooth either way.
Thanks gundar, appreciate the comments. Yah, I am going to play around with the interview audio.
As for the "walking backwards" effect, I am just using a home made dolly and I have a tokina 11-16mm on the gh2 pointed at an angle so you cant see the dolly support but it does end up entering the frame so I had to crop it a bit.
It is a bit of a DIY disaster but it works great. I have to figure out a better leg system but right now they fold up and stabilize good enough. But its maximum height off the ground is just under 2 feet.
Cage? Any pics of that. A cage was going to be next project.
It is waiting on the paint to dry right now. Here is was a few days ago.
This is just the prototype to get the feel of the design. Next I will be taking a peice of welding metal and some bars and jbwelding or actually welding the handles onto the metal plates so that there aren't any screws on the top or bottom. Then drill some precise holes and mounting.
All in all though, this cage cost around $10 as you see it in the pic. Add a few dollers if you don't already have the high-heat grill paint.
Really nice shots in there, particularly enjoyed the slowmotion surfer doing a great dolphin impression, and the glowing traffic at the end. I thought u must have a small light and easy to setup dolly to get shots of the divers getting stuff outta the van, evidently not!
